  • Over the past few years, Minecraft and Mojang have fallen in the eyes of some in their community. Today, I want to talk about why this happened as well as how recent snapshots for 1.21 have begun to heal that broken community. It feels like minecraft is finally moving in the right direction and I couldn't be happier for it.

Hey all! This video was a lot of fun to make! I did some neat edits and changed up my style a little. I took inspiration from some other CZcams channels (lol channels that don't even do Minecraft content) to try and expand my editing knowledge! I want to keep making video essays, but I also wanna make some more varied content! If you want to help make that happen, consider subscribing or becoming a member! It helps out a ton! Thanks for watching! :D

Negativity is unfortunately a trend in CZcams, even in this video you bring Mojang down quite a bit.
You try to keep everyone on your side. I get that both these thing help you get more views so, you can keep doing these but some people just won’t like it.
I think with 1.21 the positivity is starting to rise again but some people stay stuck in the past a bit to much…

to me they are still quite lazy, the new dungeon is nice but the underground biomes are still underwhelming, the end and also the nether need more biomes to explore even if it's variations on the existing ones, the game becomes dull quickly if you like to explore like I do, something as trivial to make as a fungal cave, underground lake or river biome, or even simple nether biomes variations like windswept and old growth, similar to the overworld, that would make a world of difference for people like me that like to adventure to just see new stuff and be amazed by world gen to then construct a new base every time I see a beautiful place I want to visit again in the future

@@NotReal4 I don't know if where you live is like where I do, but here companies need to work hard to keep their clients and everyone needs to work hard no matter what they do to keep a good job position and get a raise, slacking off is not excusable, and of course, a company with people slacking off don't resist much.
I understand Mojang has some heavy quality control and they need to discuss and triple-check everything even before putting it in a snapshot and half of the stuff they work on gets scrapped, but even then it feels like they are way too slow, a company this big that delivers this little in so much time to me is really hard to excuse, I am willing to understand in the covid period for a slow down, they also did great with the nether update and the new generation update was nice as well but after that, to me, it's really hard not to think they are just being lazy while the other Mojang games get way more content than Minecraft, why is the main team of devs this slow...
The texture team is actually great tho, the number of new blocks with the quality they have it's Impressive on the least, I don't get how everyone else can't keep a decent pace, hopefully I'm just wrong and something really big is coming for 1.22

@@amelio7737 You know, the coding team spends most of their time optimising the old spaghetti Java code and turning it into bedrock code so that Minecraft can run at a decent pace their focus is making a well running game and if they can put new content in it.
If you look at the April fools snapshot this year a lot of computers can’t handle it, crash constantly have lots of bugs that duplicate items display wrong textures or sounds and even more.
The other Mojang games are being built in their own coding language with good code and it’s super easy to add new things.

I've seen it pointed out elsewhere, but 1.21 seems like it is largely an update making future updates more easy and fun. They can use things like trials spawners, vaults, and ominous events elsewhere, and have almost promised to do so. This really gives me hope that all these things arent just one-offs, but are actually used more.

    • @Gigi4u
      @Gigi4u Před 2 měsíci +65

You do realize iron ore is one of the more common resources found in the game right. Iron armor is usually the first armor that you get because it is easier to find than gold, lether and diamonds.
The ore is also used in other ways like redstone or decorative blocks so iron never loses its value because it is used in far more things that aren't involved with tool progression.
The ore that actually needs changes is diamond ore because right now it is pretty useless after you get you first set of netherite armor, It needs more uses outside of tool progression. Mojang had made some steps twords making diamonds more useful by adding armor trimms so I hope In the future Mojang will give more reasons to actively look for diamonds.

That's some bad vertical progression. In my comment I mentioned this as well, and gave an option for a solution. Whatever they do, something must be done at some point.

    • @GlacierMoonDragon

A better way to solve it imo, is by buffing and debuffing armor while retaining most of its original properties. Some altars could be inaccessible, so you'd need to clear the rubble or build a path to them so that the Warden can go through without actually pissing it off, for example. That way we keep the whole stealth action horror thing intact, and use the mechanics of Warden's hearing to our advantage with snowballs, arrows etc, AND keep the idea that the Warden isn't worth killing

5:23 The issue here is not that Mojang is censoring content, but that they are enforcing this on privately hosted servers. If this were just on realms (as it had been for years prior) it would be fine, but expanding restrictions and bans to privately owned and operated servers is too far.

@@TheGeekFactor_ Why are private servers too far? Because people spend their own money on them, host them on their own hardware, and *should* have complete control over them. If someone is banned for any reason, such as any and all swearing (this is enforced on realms), they are not only locked out of Mojang's servers but also servers that they themselves own. Server owners and moderators effectively have no say in what goes on in their servers anymore, as if they decide that a report is not appropriate, Mojang may step in and ban the user in question anyway. This is just off the top of my head. I'd recommend watching "Java chat reporting from the perspective of a server host".

I also don't buy that Mojang cares about kids like you say they do -- have you seen the sheer number of pay to win servers and servers which prey on children, which when reported to Mojang, have no action taken against them? They even promoted them on their server list a few months back, nearly the entire list was filled with those servers. I don't think that's a good enough justification to ban innocent people from playing the game they paid for on servers they paid for and own.

@@stardust-kyun You do have complete control over your server. No one has taken that away. You can choose to host Minecraft or not host Minecraft. The problem is not their legal right to censorship on their private property. The problem is their account system. And if morons wish to agree to their terms, then that's their choice. But you do not have a right to farm on their property. And that is what you are doing when you run Minecraft, which is Microsoft property, on your server. Microsoft has legal authority over both you and the players because you agreed to their terms when you migrated your account away from Mojang and onto Microsoft. What you should be doing is the same as me, never agree to those terms and demand either access to the product you legally paid for OR a refund. Which is what I have done, yet they refuse to give me either. This makes them criminals. They stole the game I legally paid for. They are criminals until they give every person like me that have refused their migration terms a full refund of their purchase price PLUS interest accrued since the initial request for said refund.

I want to reiterate what you've said about Minecraft's progression. The thing about progression is that, even though it's very important in keeping interest, it inherently can't do that forever. It's all the other stuff MC has that has made it the giant it is today. Open world, goals are set by the player and not just the game itself, has a wide selection of usable items, and has options for anyone, either the puzzle solver and engineer (they get redstone), the warrior (both pvp and pve), the explorer (huge array of biomes and structures), and nearly anyone else, it's got the perfect foundation for a long-lived game. I think the mace needs to be nerfed hard, but even if it's not nerfed it's a step in the right direction. Iron is extremely common and it's in the top three materials, a dumpster fire of a situation when it comes to progression, and there's little if any variety in the top tier gear. And aside from things like Ender Pearls and tipped arrows, there aren't a lot of items that add variety to combat. Minecraft needs more horizontal progression, sorely. And perhaps some degree of cosmetics, though banners on shields and smithing templates do a lot for that. The fact that iron is so high up despite being so easy to get (people literally skip leather armor because it's such a pain to get by comparison) shows that this game needs some more vertical progression as well. On TheGeekFactor's End Update video, I left a large comment that mentioned that an end ore should NOT be better than Netherite in strength, but should have benefits in other ways, like being able to attach your elytra to its chestplate or other similar things. Such a thing would go great directly above iron, maybe even as an upgrade to diamond like Netherite is but with equal stats to diamond. This would add depth to the top tier of gear in Minecraft. I have places to be, so I'll leave off at that. Good video man.

    I say this multiple times
"Minecraft does not need to become harder but more engaging"
And the trial chamber is a wonderful example.
The idea of multiple things to do in a game has been poorly executed in Minecraft. I know you can do anything you'd like to but what of when your out of ideas. This is when the already exists challenges and quests come into place.
Let me explain. You build your house you want to take the game slowly you build and take your time but after its done you end up a bit bored so you decide to to the nether and you have some more fun for a short while and then you run out of ideas again. You decide to go to the to the end.
If you noticed, the lack of engagement is pushing you to go faster than you want to. And when your done with all your ideas, builds and existing engagements in the game ( im talking about anything that is intended to keep you entertained in game ) you run out of things to do.
Mojang has taken the right step in the right direction with the trial chambers amd making the mace only accessible through them makes them an actual engagement with an actual price and not just some place you just go to for nothing in particular. And thats the mistake Mojang made with archeology. Its not actually giving you anything as a reward for your time just an egg which is kinda useless still.
It would also help if they didn't tell us everything about an update and just let us actually explore and see new things we were never aware of.

All they really need to do is remove the to expensive thing on the anvil, or have villagers have the chance to have maxed out book(like unbraking 3). If they did this then i would love the villager changes.

Sarcasm: Since they care about realism so much then why don't they make mobs like wolves attack the player if they get too close or make them attack more then just sheep? Wouldn't be fun for the balance of the game but at least it would be realistic in Mojang's eyes if floating dots killing frogs is too much.

I'm pretty sure this video was made before the more recent snapshots, but another HUGE part of 1.21 that most people don't talk about is the amazing QoL features they've added for data pack developers (if you don't know much about data packs, I'm sure this will just sound like gibberish).
The new component system is much more versatile than nbt data, allowing players to make FULLY CUSTOM TOOLS with different durability, mining speeds, and everything. You can even make _any item_ edible if you wanted (which is great for making custom foods with resource packs and custom model data).
ENCHANTMENTS are now data-driven, meaning you can literally make your own custom enchantments, which I never would have expected in a million years. Its amazing! You could make an enchantment that explodes things when you hit them if you wanted.
Paintings and Wolf Variants are also data-driven, so using a combination of data packs and resource packs, you can actually add your own custom paintings and add more wolf variants for different biomes. Its _insane!_

The problem I have is just that some new features feel half complete or not fully realized. This is coming from a mod-player so ofc I'm going to be greedy so take my statements with a grain of salt. Also by no means am I insulting Mojang. I was only disappointed in 1.20 and really liked 1.19.
    1. Archaeology is useless. Right now it's just sweep some sand/gravel and at best get a music disc. The rest of the stuff can probably be obtained quicker if you just don't do archaeology. I feel like some new item(or even some new mechanic) should be added for archaeology to make it viable and interesting. And even then, it doesn't have to be a revolutionary item or even a new item, just better loot. As for the mechanics, it could be as simple as firing and designing your own pottery(as teased).
    2. The Deep Dark feels half done. It may be because it will be finished in a later update, due to all the implications and the fact that there can be so much expanded upon, but looking at soul sand valleys or ocean monuments, I can't help but feel like Mojang will just leave the deep dark as a borderline useless or uninteresting deserted biome. Again, some new mechanic or new mob could be added to spice it up and/or complete it. An example could be a tool/block/mechanic that compressing your XP into sculk so you can save your levels if you die. Not overpowered and definitely a QoL change.
    3. The Sniffer feels nowhere near complete. I get aesthetic mobs like the panda, I enjoy them. But the sniffer is lazily done. No hatching animation(which is ofc to be expected), no personality and I really think a function should be given to it considering the fact that you need to go out of your way to get it. Maybe it can help with farming, maybe it can dig up more aesthetic plants or even 1 more semi-useful plant. Maybe the sniffer just needs a bit more personality and nothing else. As with the deep dark, there is so much potential to be had with this mob.
I'm kind of wishing that the ominous bottle had more effects but I honestly think that Mojang has worked hard enough for this update and that would be too much to ask. Overall, I just think most of these mechanics are useless/half finished. There is so much that can be expanded upon and even then, I'd be happy with only a few small editions.

Archaeology is a mechanic just like fishing, except it was just added instead of having over a decade to get more. 1.20 just introduced the new mechanic, it's primary thing is expanding the exploration of structures and being immersive to the experience. And that had already greatly expanded 4 different structures. And it's purpose will be just like that as it comes to new or old structures. It's a feature that can be expanded at any time.
You also get Sniffer, a bunch of unique pottery sherds and armor trims from it, which is other then the music disk. These are all reasons to do it even if you don't think it's enough at the moment. This feature is also way more involeved then just using the brush on a block.

Sniffers don't do anything useful, "unique" sherds that are also useless and not versatile at all, and armor trims which are pretty bad even for cosmetic standards. The music disc is really good but at the end of the day it doesn't justify the structure. It is literally just slowly digging and holding right click.

My theory for why it was scrapped is that it would have been too complicated trying to make the growth stages work with the way multiple vines can occupy the same block at the same time... Like, imagine having a fully grown vine and placing another in the same tile... They couldn't make each side of it have separate growth, that would be way too complicated and confusing to code in with blockstates... But they couldn't really make it automatically be fully grown either, as that wouldn't make much sense. Personally, I think it could work, but I understand why they scrapped it.

My only problem with the villager rebalance is that is doesn’t totally fix the core problem. I agree that mending should be harder to get but this new system just makes it incredibly tedious without actually fixing the bigger issue. People will take villagers and force them to breed in the swamp biome but then in the end you still just have to sit there breaking and placing a lectern over and over. It’s just a more convoluted way to do the same thing. I think they should add a more interesting and player involved way to obtain mending. Maybe they add a feature to the grindstone that lets you take one enchantment off of a piece of gear and put in on a book, players could then fish or loot end cities for gear and get mending that way. Maybe there could be a librarian boss that spawns in woodland mansion libraries that will always drop 1-3 high level enchanted books, including mending. Those are just some ideas I thought of that feel more like really earning the books instead of just exploiting villagers.

    Here's what i think
Mijang needs to stop looking at power and start looking for dynamism for example, there is a trend in cery weapon in Minecraft that being the consecutive weapon would be better in every way ( except gold for some reason 😂 ) with absolutely no downsides making people rush to make decisions that are overall the best very easily. There is a large potential of things to do with the weapons eg.
Iron is a mid armor set but there is nothing else to differentiate it form leather apart form the fact that it's stronger. Now imagine if Mojang made iron armor heavier that leather and thus slows the play down a little. This alone has made you give a second thought to leather armor as an alternative when your going into places where you need to escape quickly.
Not to talk of the fact that copper exists and imagine if we could make alloys which will strick a balance between light and strong. Making you think of the best armor set to use in a particular situation.
Imagine if diamond was not the ideal armor or weapon in a situation but gold is. This kind or variation will make the player soo much more involved in the decisions he makes.

Even if 1.19 and 1.20 have some controversy surrounding them, they’re still good updates. The Deep Dark is interesting, Allays are niche yet fun, Cherry Forests are beautiful, and Archaeology is a fun side activity.
Caves and Cliffs started an incline in updates in my opinion. Cave Generation, the Deep Dark, and Archaeology all deserved more time in the oven and they have been expanded in amazing ways.
The Deep Dark being delayed enabled Ancient Cities, Swift Sneak, and many of the Warden’s intricate mechanics to exist.
Archaeology is in a weird state right now. I like the pottery, but the system isn’t very rewarding or distributed throughout the world. Good thing is that this is very easy to fix. Same with Sniffers. Nothing has been fundamentally wrong with Mojang’s additions, it has been external factors that fuel most of the controversy with the game.
1.17 to 1.20 focused on player expression, which is far more important than traditional progression and combat for Minecraft. Now we can shift our attention to more traditional progression and catering to players who want constructed content, since 1.17 and 1.20 have provided for creative building type players in extraordinary ways.

I want to see improvements to existing systems to remove RNG and cheese. For example enchantment. What the hell, it's soooo annoying to not get the damn feather falling 4 for like 1037037 try. This is not how it's supposed to be. I think enchantment table should have upgradable levels as in something like the Blood altar from the mod. It either requires you to build stuff around the enchantment table to unlock the better enchantments or upgrade the table itself (maybe even both, one for getting better enchatment, one for getting higher level of the enchantment. It should allow you to CHOOSE the enchantment you want. Imagine, you want sharpness 5, you have to unlock top tier enchantment table from resources, you collect from all over the world, like netherite, exho shards and end stuff. And even then, you only unlock the basic Sharpness. You would still need to build a structure of some sorts around the table to get to the desired enchantment level. However, after you did this PROGRESSION, you can freely choose to put this enchantment every single time. No more RNG, no more trying for million times wasting your time. Instead, time was spent exploring the world and collecting necessary ingredients for this.

One thing I feel mojang is leaning too much into for a solution is they are making progression harder by just decreasing the pacing of a world. Terraria made it so that if you want to progress faster just git gud. But mojang does stuff like make it so you have to spend 5 hours moving villagers so your armour won't break instead of focusing on making it so the player has to play to unlock this gear.

      basic rundown:
-wolves have 8 new variants (plus armodillos/wolf armor)
-New underground stucture called the "trial chambers" (pretty common underground, made up of new copper and tuff blocks, has various combat rooms)
-new variant of spawner called "trial spawner" (which will spawn a finite amount of monsters, gives a reward after defeating all mobs)
-an auto-crafing redstone block called the "crafter"
-the "vault" block (basically a locked chest you open with a "trial key", can only be opened once per player, but multiple players can open the same vault)
-a new hostile mob called the breeze (like a wind version of the blaze, will drop "wind charges" which are a projectile you can use to hit enemies/propel yourself in the air)
-a new weapon called the "mace" (a hammer that deals more damage the longer you fall, super cool!)
-rework of bad omen (it is now a potion you drink, plus it now works in trial chambers to create a hard mode called "ominous trials", which can give you better rewards like the mace)
-new armor trims, banner patterns, and pottery sherds

I still think that Mojang made the right decision to split Caves and cliffs instead of hand us half-assed garbage. 1.17 was underwhelming but that was coming on the heels of the Nether update. 1.18 was fantastic and was the bulk of the update, a total overhaul of the overworld. 1.19 was great, a very complex and unique structure, sculk (which is a game changer to many) and the Warden. 1.20 is the only underwhelming update imo, and yet Armour Trims have opened a completely new world to plugin and datapack development.

Minecraft was something unique, not unique just for the sake of it but unique in a good way. It was a good game.
When I look at it now, see everything that's been added since my departure... It's like, the content was made by kids or for kids. It's like cheap mods... It's just content... Like seeing another movie with a random name and plot on Netflix, something which can't stand out on it's own.
It's like making the 89th movie about Fast & Furious.
It baffles me that there is so much they could do, without even touching the base game, yet it's just uninspired literally sh*tty content. I really can't understand how this happens in most games who support modding in some way. How is it that a bunch of modders always end up with the most obvious fucking idea, make it good and improve the game, having millions of downloads. Meanwhile the studio and actual devs are getting paid for doing jackshit.
I guess they are bored of working on Minecraft but the pay is good... Or they have cool ideas but they need to keep the game available for all kids.
Maybe it's just a kid's game now. We grew up, Minecraft didn't. It didn't evolve much or introduced more sandbox mechanics or building features either.
It could have done so much more... It could have incorporated building more into progression, make progression slower or meaningful. At worst it could have introduced a better survival mode instead of a simple difficulty.
This is literally Microsoft's biggest game and it's just a pile of shit built on top of it's initial state, which was a decade ago. It's like the initial state was FarCry 3 and what was built after that is all FarCry 6. Just meaningless content, made for the sake of adding content, uninspired, cheap, made for kids and people with ADHD and even than the output rate and quality of content is much less than what it's budget and popularity suggests.
I think the last time I seriously dived in was 1.8. After that I quit. And not once any of the news or updates made me come back and play it seriously. I never felt excited. I didn't even beat the game or built huge ass buildings. Didn't spent time much on multiplayer servers other than a very thoughtful and elegant roleplay server which kept the vanilla experience.
I got what I wanted and after more than a decade, they never managed to add something that actually made me come back. But mods, the mods did.

Vertical progression refers to a sort of linear progression. For example, going from A to B to C. Horizontal progression introduces optional progression and optional paths; paths that aren’t necessarily better or required, but are an option.
So instead of going from A to B, think of it as going from A to A1 then to B. There’s an extra step there that isn’t necessary.

    5:30 - Yes. **But** .
Generally speaking there is no disagreement here. Its a private company. They should be allowed to limit what people can do and say within their property. However, this is where the "but" comes in. Not within servers that arent hosted by them and not on your own server either. And most definitely not on your singleplayer world to the point of censoring.
Its not just "a little unpopular" its a downright L take situation that doesnt think about the issues that come from such a restriction on player behavior. Again, you are correct. But that doesnt mean you are right. Cause you fail to look at it from the other side, the general playerbase side.
"If you dont got anything to hide, surely you dont mind if we take a look through your bags?" - No you cannot look through my bags, tell me why you want to. "Well we think you may have done suspicious things" - Cool you got a warrant? "No." - Ok cool buzz off then.
    - Yea I dont got anything to hide, that doesnt mean I will let anyone just look through my stuff even if they are police. There is proper procedure for this for a reason. And the same applies to Minecraft. Instead of telling players that they can opt in to having their comments be seen by the feature, they go full 1984 to the point where people were forced to make mods and plugins to prevent the feature from accessing their servers and worlds.

    • @TheGeekFactor_
      @TheGeekFactor_  Před měsícem

It’s not at all the same as the police saying “just open the bag” because you have to be reported from within your community to get banned. So if you type some racist or sexist or creepy shit in chat and someone in your private community reports it, that’s on you for being stupid enough to say it in mojang’s chat and not like on some discord server. Like, if I hosted a platform where children could communicate with each other and adults, I’d have chat reporting too. Roblox does. You can get banned from Roblox on private games if you say bad shit in chat.
The solution is simple; if you want to be a bad person, do it on some other platform. Furthermore, AN ALARMING amount of servers have bad people as their staff team. People who are power hungry and abusive. If the staff of the server is abusing people, who is then to stop them? The owner? What if they’re in on it or don’t care or aren’t active? There needs to be some level of safety there and I think chat reporting is a fine system. Mojang does not have the man power to just have people who monitor your chat all the time.
It’s more like “hey we got a video that shows you’ve been robbing people. We’re gonna go through your bag,” which happens in real life, barring some lawyer involvement lol

The concern is that people could've been wrongfully banned, as in, BANNED, banned, from multiplayer via the chat report system.
It was apart of the system for a while when they were talking about it.
That's why people freaked out about it. Enough reports would've lead to a literal widespan IP ban.
I think if Mojang was smart this part of the system was probably scrapped very quickly after seeing the response to it.
I think, personally, it has everything to do with a power trip and very little to do with Mojang or even the Minecraft community as a whole.
Microsoft wants more control over the game and community they own. Problem is, they haven't earned it.
They want us to believe in them and their decisions, they'd better get busy making suggestions that make sense for the community.
Otherwise, they can screw off. 😂

  • @mastertheory4583
    @mastertheory4583 Před 2 měsíci

It seems to me that the reaction of the community then and now was unnecessarily exaggerated. Of course, the Mojangs fell into the dirt several times, but often conflicts and misunderstandings between them and the fans arose because of stupidity or banal "hate for hate's sake" (like a constant comparison with mods, although hey, half of the studio here are former mod developers). It is definitely important to leave feedback to Mojang, but it is not necessary to grumble and always boycott everything - Mojang can listen to everything calmly and quietly.
As for the game itself, I think the Mojang redemption arc started back at 1.20. I mean, the modified format of Minecraft Live, where they talked only about the ready-made functions of the game; a bunch of things added from the fan's wish list, like cherry forest and camels; the final closure of the gestalt from "Caves and Cliffs" (Bundle were added a long time ago, stop referring to them) - all this says one way or another about the changed approach to game development. Yes, you constantly refer to the Sniffer and Archaeology (which, in my opinion, is implemented better than on the original concept, and has its own clear place in the game), but omits all the other good things added to the game, like the same Armor Trims or Ceramic Pots. In the end, even the community's reaction to the update was generally positive (unless, again, you refer to the Sniffer)
1.21 is rather a continuation of this development strategy, just in a more desirable form. And yes, this update is definitely one of the most successful in recent times. And not only because of its actual content, like Crafter and Breeze, but also because of the "toolkit" it provides. Trial Spawner, Vault, and Bad Omen are all flexible items with which you can literally change the game beyond recognition in the future. Even now, their potential is already visible, and it is only a matter of time before they are implemented in other systems.
Finally, regarding the update of the game's progression, do not expect any significant changes in the near future. After all, Minecraft is primarily a sandbox, not an RPG (unlike Terraria, which is primarily an RPG, and only then a sandbox, and therefore comparing it with Minecraft is not entirely true). Before starting such things, developers still have to finish other things, such as balancing villagers (which has not really progressed anywhere since 1.20.2), enchantments and anvils, and these things require a lot of balancing and discussions with the community. It is unlikely that Mojang wants to repeat 1.9. - it is better to make small additions in different parts of the game than to change everything and get hit on the head by everyone.
