Actually there’s a meme game with shrek that ends in the backrooms five nights at shreks
10:56 Only Matpat could be so determined to parse out the layout of the lines on the logo and check for clues in the surrounding papers that he misses the very obvious coordinates. They lead to the real-world Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, which is also what pops up if you type MLML into Google.
It killed me that it was like, the top result when he typed it into Google and he didn't notice.
I couldn’t believe it 😂 he was looking at the lines saying how “it’s just a small detail that he as a theorist would notice”, while completely missing the obvious coordinates laid right before his eyes.
He did actually notice the coordinates, but he probably forgot about them. You can hear him briefly mentioning the coordinates at 5:42

I like how he ignores the result that comes up when hes searching mlml, its a marine research lab in California.
Then claims how good of an eye he has to catch these things.
I was sitting there yelling at the screen, "Matt just look up the coordinates on the mug! It is a marine lab!"
But then also doesn’t look up the coordinates that are literally on the mug.
all it took was looking up the coordinates 😤
He tends to look so hard for complicated hidden clues that he misses obvious ones (or forgets about them and thus doesn't look them up). He'll research the cords off camera he mostly focuses on searching more hidden stuff on gtlive because the easy stuff can be researched later with ease
Kane handles a jumpscare better than all the big budget horror movies. It was earned and didn’t need music and a loud sound effect to pull off.
The thing here is too is that it's kinda the reverse of the Hollywood jump scare. Horror movies for instance use the music and sound to build the tension that culminates in the jump scare. With this, the jump scare is a genuine surprise, it isn't expected, and instead of ending the tension it's used to ignite the tension.
it was just subverting expectations and overall a pretty cheep jumpscare

Nothing is more Matpat than looking something up, having google auto fill a really good answer that’s probably the right one, only for him to ignore it and keep checking something about numbers. This is the content we come for.

I figured out part of the pitfalls room! If you go back to backrooms pitfalls video from Kane Pixels, watch 5:37 to 5:45. If you watch close enough you will notice the camera man makes his way over and walks on the suspicious plank Matpat had pointed out throughout this video. When the camera man walks on it, he falls THROUGH the plank as if it wasn't there. The suspicious plank is not real but imaginary. It is not really there. The camera man was not just clumsy after all.
If you want Matpat to see this new revelation, give it a like please.
Interesting! I knew he fell at that plank, but the fact that he fell *through* it, like it wasn't there, opens up so many possibilities in the future of this series

Unfortunately Mat forgot about that one detail i guess. And Ash hadn't yet replaced Mirror Matt so they didn't catch it either
I think he didn't step on that particular plank, but Marvin fell into that hole where that suspicious plank is. maybe both sides are imaginary plank, left and right. the right one is where Marvin stepped

What if this guy who brought shotgun had different instructions about their mission. Like he was scared to death when he lost his gun and after they confirmed that it was Peter who took it he called for backup. Maybe he had to find either him or his body but when he saw Peter standing in front of him he called for help with threat? Maybe he was instructed to not let him out of backrooms if he was still alive.
This would make sense if they knew about the bacteria and it would explain why he was able to survive months without food and water since the bacteria provides sustenance to it's host. This is why the company asumed that, if this guy is alive he must be contaminated and this is why they can't let him leave the backrooms. Also, they wouldn't have brought a real gun with them if they were hunting for cryptics, it would have made more sense to bring a tranquilizer gun with them because studying a living monster yields more result than studying a dead monster.
@@kitsu_noshi I mean, they probably went in with the assumption that tranquilizers wouldn't work with a monster made out of bacteria.
He had to bring a shotgun as a precaution for the monster that was seen in pitfalls/report

@@kitsu_noshi Time works differently in the Backrooms, Kane's Backrooms are different and aren't the same to the canon Backrooms so this might not be true to Kane's version, but in Backrooms lore time works differently and you only need to eat and drink every month or so. So if he was down there for months it would be like not eating for 3 or 4 days and he would probably be starving but still alive.
As Matt noticed, that one plank in the pitfalls room is the same place where the camera man fell through in Pitfalls, meaning that the reason for his falling was most likely due to that structural difference

Actually the hole the guy falls in is left 1, up 1 from the hole with the shadow.
The echoing of the gun after he fires it is so good. The idea that you could be in another room miles away and suddenly you hear this sound reverberating through the halls.
Kane is a master at realism
With enough distance and bounces of sound, it would lose the "pop" and be more of a menacing "whoosh"
I feel like the more pressing concern is that some _thing_ could hear this from far away, not some _one._
About the radios.
What if Async was in radio silence with their team until they incountered the "hostile"? Maybe they knew that they would incounter him.
You mean encounter?
I don't think it's radio silence. It's probably the radio can't reach them. Remember in pitfalls when Marvin stepped over the part of the floor that had a height difference his camera glitches I think the same thing happened when they went over the gap in the floor, there radio can't make it through there.
there was probably nothing to talk about on the radio so there would be no reason to make more noise and possibly attract a creature or something

I love how they both focus so much on MLML to the point of connecting Shrek, but never mention the map coordinates on the top and bottom of the logo.

Yeah I am super disappointed in Matt for this 😂 Such an easy talking point that he could have easily spent theory crafting instead of "Shrek"🙄 It was even in the google suggestion when he typed MLML.

And doing so in a way that doesn't involve ringing. Ringing noises that are accurate to tinnitus can trigger it if it's episodic, like pretending to have hiccups causing your diaphragm to actually give you hiccups. So one could imagine my relief! Kane is so good

@@loamytenebrous For some of us, that artificial ringing is physically painful due to having sensitive hearing that is able to hear higher pitch sounds than the average person as well, so I'm greatful in that regard that Kane didn't use that sound.
@@loamytenebrous You wouldn't get ringing in a recording anyways. It's a microphone, not an ear, so you just get a lot of distortion, because the microphone can't handle any louder audio.

I think the fungus is already affecting Peter. That is probably how he hasn't needed food or water.
Maybe that’s why they left him in shadow, because he was already showing the effects of being in the Backrooms for so long? He might have even been transforming into one of those creatures.
its also only been a few weeks that Peter has been in there, the “months” reference the time jump mostly. Notice the video Reunion is dated May 25 1990. The hidden video _recording014 is an employee on the phone with his supervisor after an unknown Asynch employee who is geared up triggered the alarm. The date in the description of that video is May 8 1990.
Such a dumb idea and even worse is that 100+ people likes it. I would be sad if Kane went with an explanation this dumb to explain how Peter stayed alive.

Marvin was actually the guy from Pitfalls. What makes the scene even more heart-wrenching is that even Marvin is begging Mark(?) to stop radioing in backup, and right before the guy in black shoots, he shouts "I'm sorry..!"
The most interesting thing to me is that Marvin doesn't want OUT. He took the gun, said answer my questions, and then said "and I'll be gone". Like he’d rather stay in the backrooms than leave with Async

the ML on the coffee mug is likely Moss Landing, California. If you find the coordinates on the mug it's just offshore of Mossy Landing.

I think that small overhang beam in the pitfalls room is where Marvin was walking on in the original pitfall video. My theory is that the overhang is either loose, or it allows his objects to phase through it or no clip if you will, if I'm right that means no clipping is an entrance, exit, and an active part of the backrooms environments and is a consistent danger.
I like how "realistic" the situation in the backrooms are- just the way the team exploring is getting smarter so are the monsters. Yk how sometimes stories go: "oh wow people die to monsters whoops! Well just send more people!" They instead work around their problems like sending cameras ahead and covering up floors and what not. I just seel like it's very well done
Just a question that could be dug into, why did the missing man ask for the number of people in there at the moment. The man also says he just wants to ask a few questions and he will be gone, wouldn’t he try to escape with the exploration team?
Maybe he was planning on escaping but after hearing that his family hosted his funeral already, he had nothing left to lose so he tried to take them out with him
A theory I saw on reddit proposes that Peter ran away and he thinks that the A-SYNC expeditions are actually patrols searching for him. He asks how many people are out there because he thinks they're looking for him and he wants to know how big the search party is.
According to the lore, ASYNC sent him back out into the backrooms after announcing his death, effectively condemning him to that fate.

@@Tubeytime But there is no lore that tells us what happened to Peter when he returned. Nothing is concrete and that makes no sense, because Kane has stated that A-SYNC is not evil.
I don't know if anyone noticed this but Compare the voice of "Peter" to the monsters mimic voice in pitfalls, sounds very similar.

The fact that the monsters have been shown to mimic human voices is probably why mark was given orders to not talk to anyone met in the backrooms, and like you said, there's no indication anyone could survive for months down there, and anyone you meet there is then reasonably expected to be a monster.

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't link it back up. But, Mat probably thought it was obvious enough that they didn't need to.
I remember hearing that in the Backrooms you don't need food and water as often as in real life because time is altered and that's why if you get cuts and bruises they could be fatal because they don't heal fast
I just love how Mat has become so acclimatized to Ash's chaos that he's begun "yes, and"ing them. XD
i'd like to also point out their talking to Mark at the end saying stuff like "it's going to be ok" and we see Mark move a bit so i don't actually think Mark is dead yet

Personally, I believe that instead of them actually losing contact with the other team's radio, it was actually v-sync taking away their contact because they didn't want them to make contact with Peter who was still in the backrooms and wanted to push them out without making themselves seem suspect in case they did make contact.

I could imagine the shadow part of the pitfall room indicating that whatever made the backrooms is making errors. The room is supposed to be uniform, but yet theres this mistake been made. Perhaps a glitch in the generation, which could imply other things inside the backrooms are also erroneous.

This looks like a glitch, like a one you'd see in a video game with a missing wall texture or something similar. And considering that the backrooms is based off of stuff like 'no-clipping', it seems to make sense with the video-game-glitch vibes of the backrooms.
When they had the video on that mug with the MLML on it I was searching the coordinates on Google map and it popped up a place that was called moss landing marine lab 😳 then I searched on Google the name and it's logo and one of the images that showed the logo was almost exactly the one that was on the mug just like a different color scheme, I'm surprised they didn't look it up right away
There is also a street view of the location where there are four banners inside a fairly glitched room that say "to look around you".

The fact that Peter managed to survive in there for 10 months I repeat 10 months he must have been surviving on something cuz everybody else we seen enter into the back rooms or no clip dies
But Peter hasn't been surviving in there for 10 months. We saw him disappear on February 29th, 1990 (Backrooms - Informational Video), and reappeared on May 8th (Backrooms - Presentation). Since Reunion takes place on May 25th, Peter has only been surviving in the Backrooms for at most a few weeks.

What makes you say it was 10 months? If Peter was the guy that glitched forward in time in Informational Video and Presentation, he wasn't there that long. Presentation where he reappears is dated 5/08/90 and Reunion is dated 5/25/90 so he would have only been there a little over two weeks. That's still crazy that he was surviving back there that long but it's not 10 months like you said.
If you rember the original stories it was said that time doesn't exist in the back rooms, you can meet people from the past and present visitors all at once. Once you lose track of time, time no longer exists
I feel like i should point out that in the same video with the plants and painting we see a crashed car and since they seem to both be part of this news paper.

In other versions of backrooms lore, there's something in the backrooms known as almond water. You drink it, and it can heal any disease, including broken bones(if I remember correctly) so maybe he was surviving off almond water, maybe saving it every time he was on the brink of death and drank up to regain health. I don't know. It's just a theory. A backrooms theory! Thanks for reading.
It's possible. In Informational Video, we did see random objects appear in the weird wallpaper room, so almond water could exist within Kane's universe.

MLML actually stands for Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, it came up in the search bar just now, and if you click on the history section of the website, it shows a similar logo of a 2D globe with the words MLML in the middle, and the same coordinates on the top and the bottom.
Maybe the guy who went missing traversed some other levels and accidentally fell back into Level 0, or maybe he figured out a way to get back to Level 0 after entering others. It could make sense since there are supplies in other levels. It could also lead into a series taking place in a different level of the Backrooms with its own story and everything where A-Sync discovers level 1 or 2 or something which I'd love to see

The MLML stands for Moss Landing Marine Labs which is also where the coordinates lead to on the cup. Not sure how it relates to the backrooms though.
The whole sequence of Peter talking and stuff was so emotionally heavy
How has matpat not done a film theory on the national treasure franchise lore puzzle solving questioning the historical accuracy all that seems right up his alley with the release of the new show the timing is perfect seems like a missed opportunity
If I ever wanted a scientist for a movie I make, I would definitely choose matpat he has mad scientist energy 100%
I remembered back in Sister Location, night 5 in the scooping room, we see the shells of the Funtime robots. So that means the original shells weren't damaged beyond repair when the robots were scooped. So it's obvious to assume that Fazbear Ent. kept the original parts, and put them in the display cases in the Pizzaplex, and it explains how The Blob has a Funtime Freddy and Circus Baby head instead of Molten Freddys face and Scrap Babys face. Those heads are the original heads.

Something worth noting, I think, would be how Peter knows for certain that everyone thinks he's dead. Last we saw him, he was setting off the alarm in the observation room. Now, he's wearing different clothes (because he was shown to be in the hazmat when he set off the alarm) and seems to have pivoted from just scared and lost to fully angry. He goes straight for tackling the guy with the gun and taking it. Holding the group at gun point, even when one of them is someone who seems to be a friend of his. He even goes as far as to pull the trigger as soon as someone calls for back-up.
There are so many reasons for why that might be, but all I can think is that he was abandoned. I can only imagine this corporate entity seeing him and sending him straight back into the backrooms because, as Matt said, letting him come back would only cause more confusion. They turned him away and left him for dead in hopes that someday, one of their teams would find what was left of him and they could pretend he never found his way to an exit. Considering they were in a meeting with the government, it also would've served them not to openly deal with the guy who they lost in the backrooms.

At 8:30 - The longitude and latitude on the mug (36°47.64'N, 121°47.27'W) point at Moss Landing Marine Labs South of San Jose, CA. This is also what the MLML probably stands for as this is a copy of one of their older logos. The missing latitude line on the bottom of the sphere may have lore significance (not sure what it would be though) or it may have been to avoid copyright infringement potentially.

Well when he reappeared he was probably briefed about the whole situation. And async being scared that the public will know hi's death was fake, they probably tried to get rid of him, therefore that is why he knows
There was the secret video where a researcher explained to his boss what happened and they had talked to Peter. They probably mentioned (like the other comment said, briefed him) what happened to his family in his disappearance and he was disoriented already so he probably snapped and ran back in or they sent him back in

Hey MatPat! 48:56 there’s two more faces, there’s one on the left side of the screen about halfway down next to the leaning tree, it looks like it has a very pointed jaw and is laying more sideways while looking more up and to the right. The second is on the right also about halfway down but is looking forward towards where the camera would be, it’s head is slightly tilted to the left and looks like it’s hiding a little bit behind the smaller trees!
I also would LOVE it if anyone else could tell me that they see what I’m talking about.

I have a theory. (Not really a theory but it can be) So in the episode backrooms - pitfalls from Kane pixels, the guy that fell in the hole is named “Marvin” and the person with the camera in the video backrooms - reunion is also named “Marvin” they also both have the same voice, so I think their the same person, and here’s where I’m kinda confused, in the pitfalls video, at the end, Marvin sounded weak and sounded like he was about to (or did) die. When he first saw the pitfalls, he said something like “woah, this is new.” When I was done watching that video, I thought Marvin died. But in the reunion episode, when Marvin saw the pitfalls, he wasn’t surprised. So it seems like Marvin survived the pitfalls chase but I’m still confused because I thought he died.
6 hours later and there is a new Backrooms episode. The timing is impeccable!
