He goes from anger, to self-loathing, back to anger, to grief, and then to resolve. In the span of about 30 seconds. Amazing. It's a crime he wasn't nominated for an oscar.
He was so great as Robert the Bruce, great acting, just perfect. Unfortunately most of the emphasis of the movie is on Mel Gibson as William Wallace. In the movie William Wallace(spoiler alert) dies in the end, but he has had a great influence on Bruce and others. Similarly, in the movie El-Cid, the Charlton Heston character is a knight who gradually prepares a young man to eventually become king, fighting and eventually dying but in the process teaching the young prince how to be a king.
Great scenes and lines but the best one is later, when Robert's father tells him "Finally you know what it's like to hate" and he responds "My hate will die with you"....ugh chills
My favorite part of the movie. He really becomes a true man here. Believing in his own heart. And understanding that honor and honesty have no substitutes for the man who "really lives".
Yes! I think this is what so many films are missing these days. Yes, Braveheart isn't historically accurate but that doesn't take away from the emotions the film give you. Modern movies are missing this sense of honor and commitment in our heroes. Everything needs to be so morally grey and dingy. I miss the days of real gallant heroes. Men and women who gave their lives for God and Country, who inspired the audience to aspire to something greater even if it's only for the runtime of the film.
Of all the scenes in this film, THIS is the one I remember in its entirety. It touched my soul & I felt as he has SO many times....saying the same words. I know this is a historical drama so we’ll never know exactly what Robert the Bruce actually felt or said in life, but it’s likely he went through much more in his life than the majority of us.
He played my favourite character in Turn, the ranger Robert Rogers. He injected so much charisma into him that I was always looking forward to his appearances. Even though he was an antagonist and the show had many great characters he really stood out for his style and wit.
"For what does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his own soul?" Robert the Bruce learns what this means before it's too late. "I will never be on the wrong side again."
Leper: I'm the one who's rotting but I think your face looks graver than mine. Son, we must have alliance with England to prevail here. You achieved that. You saved your family, increased your land. In time, you will have all the power in Scotland. Robert: Lands, titles, men, power, nothing. Leper: Nothing? Robert: I have nothing. Men fight for me, because if they do not, I throw them off my land and I starve their wives and their children. Those men who bled the ground red at Falkirk, they fought for William Wallace, and he fights for something that I've never had. And I took it from him when I betrayed him and I saw it in his face on the battlefield, and it's tearing me apart. Leper: Well, all men betray. All lose heart. Robert: I don't want to lose heart. I want to believe as he does. I will never be on the wrong side again.
For all of it's historical inaccuracies you can't deny the power of Mel and Angus's portrayals in Braveheart. I liked Outlaw King, but Chris Pine just didn't rouse the emotions as much.
Although complete fantasy, and only a small one at that in comparison to the rest of the film, this small scene is more enthralling than the entirety of the Outlaw King.
I really liked Outlaw King, but I did not like Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, the rest of the characters were great though. It's a shame that they cut out the scene with an alive William Wallace.
Its like all the actors in this epic movie, were absolutely born to play their roles,to perfection and sadly to dissipear, and mostly not be seen again, think of the brilliant performance of thom hulce in amadeus, and because they were so amazing, the just could not be used an any movie thereafter, sometimes perfection is a curse

I recently learned that some of the people we point to as patriotically Scottish were from foreign family's. Robert the Bruce's family were originally called De Bruc and changed their name to sound more native. The Guy he killed in Arbroath Abby was also Norman French and the guy the English king picked to rule Scotland was also Norman French. Even the Wallace family came North with the founder of Paisley Abby from Shropshire but also Norman French. Puts a different perspective on the Auld alliance with France for me. I need to research this more to hopefully find out this is wrong because it puts a spanner in the patriotic fervor i have for my country.
To believe in something like a good righteous cause, oh, if only. Another great scene from an awesome movie. Histrorically inaccurate but awesome nonetheless.
I dont understand why John Fury said he was this leper from Braveheart. This leper doesnt seem to value loyalty and even advised his son to betray Wallace. I see John Fury more like the Scottish father who was fighting alonside wallace and his son. He was brave and fought till the end, never once betraying his family.
"I want to believe, as he does"
Favorite line from the movie. It's always stuck with me for some reason.
Just like Polish people from 1795 to 1918
"I will *never* be on the wrong side again." is one of my favorite lines from this.

My Scots family were Normans too . No crime, as a lot of Highlanders were of Irish blood. History is never static 😉
Robert the bruces mother was a Gael from southwest(I think) Scotland who had family ties in Ireland.

Great scene , bad history. The old man was right; thats always been the way of powerful men.
There is also power in a higher conviction.
What was wrong with the father ? Dud he have some disease ?
Yes, probably lepra ir something like this
Leprosy
Some great acting - but a total mish-mash Historically - but enjoy it for what it is a movie.
What disease does he have?
It’s Leprosy, also called Hansen disease
Robert Bruce's father didn't have leprosy. He suffered from a chronic case of cutaneous porphyria.
