- The best scene of the movie "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"
Dialogue:
Elizabeth I: Ambassador? What do you know of the Enterprise of England?
Don Guerau De Spes(Ambassador): The Enterprise? Forgive me, Majesty, I'm not familiar...
Elizabeth I: Two armies landing on the coast of Sussex and... (pause) ...Norfolk. Mary Stuart is to be set free and placed on the English Throne, and I am to be assassinated. Does any of this sound familiar?
Don Guerau De Spes: I know nothing of any invasion plans...
Elizabeth I: Well, I refer to this plan as the Enterprise of England, it should more accurately be called "La Empresa de Inglaterra" because it is a Spanish plan. The plan of my one-time brother in law, your king, to attack my country.
Don Guerau De Spes: Your country? It is my country that is under attack. Your so called Piratas, your pirates attack our merchant ships daily. And you... You think we don't know where the orders come from? The whole world knows these pirates sail up the tames, all the way to your royal bed.
Elizabeth I: (Angry) You will leave my presence, sir. Go back to your rat hole! Tell Phillip I fear neither him, nor his priests, nor his armies. Tell him if he wants to shake his little fist at us. we're ready to give him such a bite, he'll wish he'd kept his hands in his pockets.
Don Guerau De Spes: You see a leaf fall and you think you nkow which way the wind blows. Well, there is a wind coming, madam, that will sweep away your pride.
Elizabeth I: (Very angry) I, TOO, CAN COMMAND THE WIND, SIR! I HAVE A HURRICANE IN ME THAT WILL STRIP SPAIN BARE IF YOU DARE TO TRY ME!

From Elizabeth to Galadriel to Hela, Cate Blanchett was born to play queens.
She’s amazing
Did you listen to a word she said? She said she's not a queen, nor a monster; she's the Goddess of Death.
@@mindstone6883 guess i missed that part
She is goddess
galadriel also, technically, is not a queen.

"DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE?!"

Jeez, maybe Shakespeare WAS Elizabeth. (Shakespeare was Shakespeare, and no one else. This is a great line, though.)
I love her mental climbdown at the end when she realises 'I just declared war on the global superpower'. Swiftly capped with a resolve to make good on her words.
Excellent character acting.
That Tudor temper -- really just like you are hearing and seeing a child of Henry 8 !
As Elizabeth once remarked she may have the feeble body of a woman but she has a heart and stomach of a King! She told that to English troops when they were waiting to ambush the Spanish Armada if they had made it to land she went and visited them and stirred them up to fight
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 It’s really too bad she didn’t have an heir.

During this time of wars of religion, religion was important to the point where putting a catholic or suspected catholic on the English throne was a bit like opting to declare Vladimir Putin the president of Ukraine in 2023.
When she yells "I have a hurricane in me that will strip Spain bare if you dare to try me!" I can truly see both Henry and Anne in her...
Yes Cate Blanchett's real name was actually Cate Boleyn Tudor

I like how they scream at each other but still say "sir" and "madam" lol
I do, too. It's like saying "I respect your opinion" before dragging someone's opinion in the dirt!
This is still done today--in the lower house of Parliament you must address another MP as a "right honourable gentleman/lady" while you're arguing with them
In the upper house you have to use "lord / lady _____" while arguing lol
i thought 'madam' was an insult because she was not married and virgin. isn't madam something you call a married lady. he called her madam thus indicating that she had sexual affairs
EDIT: Madam here is a sign of respect. I overthought things. As stated the envoy already flat out insulted her with the 'royal bed' line so no need for puns. I have realised this a long time ago but am still being corrected. Pls stop.
I think that's a leap, she's likely called Madam because royal styles on the continent weren't as exotic as English ones. To call a woman as old as Elizabeth anything else would be insulting--madam isn't just for married women, it applies to anyone woman who isn't a young adult
Class.
I love how her guard pulled his sword like, “wtf did you just say?” 😂
Like "How dareth you disrespect my queen!?"
I watched him like three times. Him looking at the spaniard, looking at Elisabeth and then "You WOT MATE?!".
He probably was a noble, but same!
The best barbs strike home because they are true. But in this time and age, you couldn't allow such things to be publicly said.
The Elizabethan version of 'hold my beer'
you can tell she is a theater actress, the voice, the presence, the power that comes from inside ,,, just the best!!!
Cate Blanchett is insanely talented. Such a force to be reckoned with. I absolutely adore her and all her movies
she's the best omgggg
She has a terrific shouting voice lol
Some people sound silly when they shout with rage, but she just sounds epic!
It's a controlled shout.
Agreed! But even better than that is how deep she can lower her voice! She spoke with that tone in the first Elizabeth movie where she tells Walsingham to get Norfolk to sign that document to have him commit treason.
“Then let him sign it, and let it all be done.”
@@marioescalante4401 Very good analogy between the two Elizabeth movies !
@@LisaMaryification I don't think it's controlled. Or at least maybe it's just me. When I'm angry, I sound more like her when I shout at people. If I'm shouting and scared, I sound shrill. It's not like I consciously change how I yell. I just lose my temper and it's that moment when you want to rip their throat out with your teeth. I can't do that, so the next best thing is yelling at them.
@@marioescalante4401 She also uses the same speaking frequency in the first Elisabeth when straightening up thing : ''I will have one mistress here , and No master ! ''

Okay, that had me actually giggle.

That was a gallant gesture but just gesture
Foolish let a loyal noble killed defending her "honour" nonsense
Elizabeth knew they knew too (as they must have had well paid informants in her inner circle) that however making fun of noble houses princes or kings pretending her alliance by marriage, as it was a centuries long business until the mid XX c., she made herself a pirate's slut, way beneath her station and office.... while playing virgin princess to the plebes swallowing the propaganda. Not even Lady Diana would be so respected for sleeping around with polo players or muslim daddy's boys, however not anymore forced to be called to SERVE as Queen. Plebes tolerance for this sleeping with servants is not so loyal
The line " Because by God, England will not fall when I am queen" and "I will not be the toy of the fate" it's marvelous too
She was robbed of the oscar that year
That’s why the current British monarchy call their family “Wind-sir”.
This deserves a reply. Witty.

Brilliantly thought.....sir!
That is so bad it is good!
That's really true, actually.
Her command, her accent, her perfection in delivery. Hands down, Cate Blachett is the BEST ACTRESS in recent times.
I like this scene because you can really see all her classical Shakespearean stage experience with the Sydney Theatre Company coming out, especially the magnificent voice projection. I would love to see her up on stage performing a real badass Shakespearean role such as Lady Macbeth - I reckon she'd be brilliant.
Cate Blanchett like Benny Hill.
You do her injustice by proclaiming her to be "the best", because all you do is invite people to contest your claim with their own favorite, and not appreciate what you say.
the visionary/ joseph manno i agree that it seems to be part of human nature to proclaim something the GOAT, but acting is art...so it is puzzling to me because you can enjoy many different artists who are great in their own unique ways without denigrating others... but i guess i get it, its just one of those things humans continually don't leave behind or outgrow, at least not yet.. and i guess its kind of almost a figure of speech at this point, like "pizza is the best! i love pizza!" so you could take that as the idea of the best and of love being watered so far down, but really...you don't actually mean it like that, so whatever i think were overanalyzing this..
but i just wanted to say the work that went into each costume, set design, etc, and her performance was great! it was... the best ever! lol just kidding..i havent even seen every movie ever made so who could really say that if you think about it, but whatever she was great, i admire her talent and she must've spent so much time preparing for this .. or she's just a natural talent...
This entire scene still gives chills and tears welling up. The threatening utterly believable acting from the incredible actor William Houston as “Don Guerau De Spes” is terrifying. Blanchette’s delivery is intense and stunningly delivered as usual.
I think they picked the ugliest man they could find to play the Spanish ambassador. I've seen better looking chimpanzees.
Cate Blanchett should've won the Oscar for this role.
She was nominated not once but *twice* for this role, and the only woman nominated two different times for the same character.

It was a big deal, what he said (not the pirate part, that was an open secret - though Dudley might have been on the outs by this part, I can’t remember - , it was openly calling a queen a slattern in her own church, *that* was like slapping the Pope). Guard-Dude was risking an international incident, which is why he backed down so quickly, but he had no choice but to draw on Spanish Ambassador-Guy no matter how outnumbered he was by the Spanish guards.
In modern terms, he may as well ripped your country’s flag off the pole and took a dump on it (if your flag was also an altar cloth).
Why? The man has as much talent as a teaspoon and as much use as a sock with holes in it.
@@adrianboardman162 where’s your imdb page so I can watch you do it better?
@@vysharra Right. The draw meant that the level of the insult, and the implied threat was recognized. Any of those men would have had to fight him, the guard, first. Because the Ambassador was also risking an international incident.
Dudley? I thought he meant Francis Drake!

If you've ever wondered what it would be like if Galadriel was a human instead of an elf with so much hidden power, here it is, especially since Cate Blanchett plays them both so well.
+KTChamberlain Yes, Cate Blanchett = Benny Hills
omg yeeeeesss :)))
Today they totally fucked galadriels role up.
Great performance. Blanchett's vocal style and delivery has echos of Glenda Jackson's superb performance from the 1960s 70s.
get it Galadriel!
