This actor was so good as Robert the Bruce! He looks so torn apart, angry, but also strong & determined. A truly Shakespearean character & performance. He should've gotten an Oscar for that, at least a nomination.

Angus MacFadyen should have won an oscar for this performance. Three scenes do it for me in this movie:
    1. This scene and in particular his delivery of "my hate will die with you"
    2. The second time he visits his father after betraying Wallace saying "I don't want to lose heart"
    3. The scene where he's walking through the Falkirk fields and seeing the families of the Scots who fell. I've never seen a better scene encapsulating the feeling of "what have I done"; his facial expressions of anguish and shame do it.
    Regardless, what a performance.

“My hate will die with you”…that to me is the greatest line of the film. IMO, Robert is the best character in the story, as is the actor who portrays him. I feel like Robert has realized that his father knows what he did was wrong, but believes it’s more important to take the route that covers your own ass and believes more so that Robert needs to experience this coldness and bitterness and use it himself to be a better king. But Robert decides it’s time to end the cycle of backstabbing and treachery, starting with his father. It’s almost like his way of saying “shove it up your ass and fuck off, and fuck off knowing that you achieved nothing”

If anything, the movie actually portrays The Bruce in a more positive light as he was being coerced and forced into betraying and deceiving Wallace and the final betrayal isn't his fault but is actually a direct result of his father's scheming. In reality, Robert the Bruce was one of the many Scottish noble's who sided, either willingly or unwillingly, with Longshanks when Wallace was being hunted for after his defeat at Falkirk. He didn't really have an active role in his capture but he also wasn't ever previously allied with Wallace. What's funny though, is that John de Menteith eventually fought under Robert The Bruce though. The plot point in the film may have been the writer's way of referencing that event. Similar to how Comyn's betrayal of Wallace at the battle of Falkirk was also referenced when the noble's that had allied themselves with Wallace fled with their cavalry towards the end of the battle of Falkirk which is allegedly what John Comyn is said to have done during the actual real life battle.

Out of sheer spite, even though said enemy had capitulated. This sparked a bloody unnecessary war with the North. His own subjects had equal hatred for him, culminating in a riot that almost claimed his life.
Whenever he lost a battle, he tortured his own betrothed. This was his downfall. Stories of his pointless cruelty reached the ears of his new betrothed and her mother. She had him poisoned, with a gruesome strangler potion on the day of his marriage. His rule was short, his legacy ignoble, and he was loved by no one. What good was his hatred?"
