The cylinders are so large that the middle of the air being compressed doesn't lose all of its heat because it is insulated by the air around it. In small diesel engines all of the heat gets lost to the cold cylinder walls.
I used to drive to oldest truck in the fleet that had a 350 Cat with 875XXX km's. That truck ran great an got awesome fuel mileage too, but I would never start if it went below -15c
@stevesai Yep, High enough to raise oil pressure to atleast 40psi, Its not an everyday thing, in fact its rare that I even work when weather is that cold.
@MrLivetorideforever ...yeaaaa, I remember the good ole dirkbike days. Kick...POP P POP P POP POP POP . two stroke bikes rule. My last dirt bike was a CR500R, that bike was MEAN !!! Then I switched to Quads
@weiserbud67 I'm thinking it was like 0-5 above at this time , but it was way below zero through the nite prior to this. Plus the wind chill BBBbrrrrrrrrrrrrr
@mami9881 It was below 0 in the early am hours, but I think it was about 10 degrees with a wind chill below 0 in vid. Probably should have just stayed home that day...
The oil is sitting in the oilpan like Molasses, and with no block heater it wont be in much of a hurry to get up to the top of motor. @ 1:14 you can see why I try not to give fuel, I did this ONLY to get smoke for vid. It just sounds like it hurts the motor..
@goodolbl honestly I dont know, is that a bad thing? I though it was ok as long as you are givin it some foot in neutral standing still just to warm it quicker?
@stevesai Its definetly not good for the motor, in fact, the ether is the worst. Normally I will leave it running at a high idle if I know I have to leave in the morning when its that cold. What i did in this video was wrong, as far as trying to step on fuel pedal when this cold. It makes me sick when I watch this video....
@MrLivetorideforever The wind was blownig so hard from the otherside, that it was forcing all the exhaust out this side of Y-pipe. When I step on fuel towards end it seperates

Jordan Graff ohhhhhhh , no worries my friend....from what I just read there was a limited amount of 359s made in 87.. but mine was definitely an 87 379 379: The 379 was Peterbilt's flagship truck from 1987 until the 2007 model year maintaining the nameplate's signature long-nose styling. Available in standard (119" BBC) and long hood (127" BBC) lengths. Replacing the "359" in 1987, it remained in production until March 2007 with the last 1000 379s
that is one serious cold start glad too see another video of the pete up hope u got a dirvin video of it in the works
I think the dog convinced it to stay running. Good thing he was there
First time i see a cold start with such an amazing background view!
The arm coming out the window with the starting fluid is the best
@twinstickpete : That's a beautiful Pete there. I got a big laugh out of the pooch who wanted to join the fun.
Absolutely a Beautiful Rig.

Nice start up. Sounds like the good ole b model crankin over.
Love that sound!
Euro trucks are now so advanced that we never have to suffer these kind of start ups anymore. Ahh..the good old days..

The dog: Daddy's leaving in Big Truck, I wanna go with him :-D
Wow ! That is a nice cold start !

@twinstickpete and my neighbors think my dirtbike is loud lol. cool man nice vid
@w900a73 Thanks, They are 8" monster stacks from "4 states" they really make a mechanical sound awesome
@twinstickpete Thanks. These seem to be a really well engineered truck. That is for sure!
I love the sound of cold start ups esp on trucks and locomotives. If you don't mind me asking you where is that located? Where the video was shot?
@Xominer there's no switch on a mechanical motor, it's an '87 pete
WoW !! Nicc truck !
@malonemotorsports1 it is certainly a 379 you can always tell by looking at the air cleaners
Oh how I would love to get that old girl going at 4:30 AM in my neighborhood.
@stevesai Yep, High enough to raise oil pressure to atleast 40psi, Its not an everyday thing, in fact its rare that I even work when weather is that cold.
@truckindadd LOVE IT!!
Is that acat or dog trying to get in the cab?? that sounds awesome, love it

@auburnboy141 ...Yes, Just had it out yesterday hauling logs
@twinstickpete that i know it was also the last year u could get a 359 and the only year with a raised roof sleeper and they were also numbered trucks
@crazydiesellover Its a Cat 3406B
@malonemotorsports1 It was the first year for the 379'
@mami9881 It was below 0 in the early am hours, but I think it was about 10 degrees with a wind chill below 0 in vid. Probably should have just stayed home that day...
It doesn't look cold, but trustme ....it was bitter bitter cold
Thx
@twinstickpete yeah i like 2 strokes too but most of my riding time is in the woods so i prefer a 4 stroke
@weiserbud67 not to long, bout 10 minutes or so. I normally start it, and wait in the house til it warms up..
@flyrock45 Ha ha haaa, yeah I hear ya, I probably should put a block heater on this one too
The oil is sitting in the oilpan like Molasses, and with no block heater it wont be in much of a hurry to get up to the top of motor. @ 1:14 you can see why I try not to give fuel, I did this ONLY to get smoke for vid. It just sounds like it hurts the motor..
is it cold enough for the coolant to freeze? coz that wold screw up ur water pump
Nice vid, thanks for sharing it :) Is/was that engine a 2 or 4 stroke and how many miles on the clocks?
@mami9881 No, had to go to work!
damn set ur idle a bit higher when u start up lol should be a switch in the cab for that
How long does it take this bad boy to warm up to operating temps? And while it's like this... can you drive it if needed?
gelling up for sure,, sounds like a Cat but seems like cummins big can
@goodolbl honestly I dont know, is that a bad thing? I though it was ok as long as you are givin it some foot in neutral standing still just to warm it quicker?

I drove a 379 pete with a cat. Does this have a catipilar or cummins??
@mami9881 yes
@luvtotruck I agree
@matterhorn1975 LOLOL, thanks,...
that was Bailey when he was a Puppy, he looooooves trucks
why is the smoke coming out of only 1 pipe?
@MrLivetorideforever The wind was blownig so hard from the otherside, that it was forcing all the exhaust out this side of Y-pipe. When I step on fuel towards end it seperates
@bratwurstle Thanks, just an 'ol worktruck
Cold fuel
knock knock knock
87 is it last of the 359 or is it a new 379
On a morning that cold, I'd react about the same as that truck. LOL. Nice looking truck. How's it sound after warming up??
Sure is
fuckin bitchin tuff cold hard start ! :)
@weiserbud67 That still makes me laugh when I watch it!!!!!! That Big dopey arm swinging out ...LOLOLOL
Just like an old Volvo F88 IN THE 1970'S LOL
@op3l YES, you could drive it once air pressure is up, but wouldnt advise it due to the oil still being too thick.........and no heat hahahaa
awesome video! dog needs a bullet in its' head by jumping up on that door and scratching the paint on that beauty of a truck.
@divisioneight LOLOL
Still around?
no....sold
a few issues
lol I love people talking about how European trucks now are easier to start and that well of course they are this isn't a new truck it's an 87 lol

lol
That's a 379 so it can't be an 87. 87 was last year of 359
Jordan Graff 87 was the first year of 379.... it was indeed an 87 with a 5/4 spicer.... great truck
Billy McNichols my bad. I totally realized I was wrong almost right after
Billy McNichols sorry about that
Jordan Graff ohhhhhhh , no worries my friend....from what I just read there was a limited amount of 359s made in 87.. but mine was definitely an 87 379

Billy McNichols they're great trucks. 359 is too narrow
Кошку чё в дом"кабину" не пустил? Гад.
Its trying so hard
Dragon Butt it was an amazing truck....
