The Texas Chain Saw Massacre '74 vs The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '03 | Face Off

- When it comes to horror movie icons, Leatherface might be head (or face) and shoulders above the rest. What makes him stand apart from the likes of Freddy, Jason, Chucky, and other slashers is the fact that he’s just a human being. Nothing supernatural here - unless you count the startling amount of times he’s been rebooted, or how tangled the timeline of his mayhem has become. But now that the big boy has released yet another sequel into the world, it’s time to look back at the two main entries in the franchise - and apologies to those who hold the bonkers 1986 sequel near and dear to their hearts. I’m talking about the one that started it all, Tobe Hooper’s THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, which featured a handful of unknown actors and was produced on a shoe-string budget. Upon its release, it made a killing at the box office and launched a franchise that includes the 2003 Michael Bay-produced remake THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE starring Jessica Biel. The remake is still a nasty piece of work, even it’s if more polished than the original. But which of these films will survive and what will be left of them? Only one way to find out: FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Eric Walkuski, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Lance Vlcek. Let us know in the comments which you prefer - the original TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE or its remake TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE!

I'm sure I'm alone, but my dad and I watched TTCM every Christmas. It's our thing. It's my first Christmas without him, but I can still watch the OG movie and think of him. ❤️
What a awesome Christmas tradition. Sounds like you had one heck of a cool father . Sorry to hear you had to spend this year without him , but watching TCM is a good way to think of him .
Keep the Tradition going with future generations 😊
Love and good vibes you're way.
A Texas Chainsaw Face Off? Do your thing cuz!
I love the 2003 one. Saw it in the cinema and still watch it once a year
Nothing, and I mean nothing, represents Christmas like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! 😄 In all seriousness, I'm going with the original here for the atmosphere and feel alone. That being said, I'm a huge, huge fan of the remake too. Of all of the modern remakes/retellings the TCSM remake is by far the best one. Merry Christmas, everyone!!
Merry Christmas, buddy, ole pal!!
I think the movie is a Christmas movie. Because when going to an obligatory family dinner.... There's always one creepy person who either reminds you of leather face or who you wish leather face would meet
@@jtoumai You make a valid point, my friend! 😄
@@justafanofnerdculture7602 for some reason I haven't been invited to family dinners in a while..... Hmmm am I the creep I speak of? I kid I kid
@@jtoumai Hmmm...you're kidding, you say? Or...are...you...!? 😄
I love both these films but the original from 74 is one of the top 10 horror films of all time and by far is the scariest TCM film. Leatherface is more badass in the remake but theres just something chilling about the original that not many films have been able to copy
The ‘74 film proves that when you’ve got a great director, cast it shows that you can terrify with very little gore.
Maybe the small budget encourages ingenuity and creativity and forges genius.
A masterpiece
its pretty much unwatchable now
"Maybe the small budget encourages ingenuity and creativity and forges genius." spot on
@@purefoldnz3070 completely disagree. Hoopers movie captured a very uneasy, gross, hot and sweaty horror scenario in a way nobody has done before or since. Its a horror masterpiece.
@@theshapeexists it is very much a ultra low budget indie 60's film. Sure it must have been scary at the time but now its just this weird little movie about hippies misadventure in a truck.
@@theshapeexists the most scary thing about it was the lack of air conditioning in the truck!! Those hippies must have smelled like a hairy girls armpit at woodstock x 10.
No movie of this type can compare to the original TCM. Completely unique and groundbreaking even outside of it's genre.
Watching all the first time the original was scarier an I would put Letherface next
Even before watching the video, I have to say it is an either or for me. I love them both. I was surprised just how good the remake was. Both work in my opinion. A slight edge might go the remake for no other reason than R. Lee Ermey. I was so much fun in the remake.
Man I really love both of these films. The remake was so well done and I've always loved Jessica Beil. I strongly disagree with the family vote. The remake's family is way more disturbing and much more of a threat than the originals.
Hoyt alone is more scary then the original family
I agree bro!
I remember watching the 2003 version in the Theater and it was one of my favorite movies, I loved it so much.. But now, when I rewatch it, I feel like it's not that great for whatever reason. I guess I'm older now and that's the difference
The original one is a shocking nightmare which will never be reached again. The music, the atmosphere and the pure insanity of it can’t be duplicated. It was a pure product of its time.
The remake was okay, but it wasn’t nearly as twisted as the original. But they got all out in brutality and the atmosphere is frightening through and through. Not a bad movie, but it can’t reach the original.
The opening credits make you uncomfortable as all Hell....
First time viewing and you don't know what your in for...
....and this movie delivers on some gruesome scenes and your brain e even makes it worse on what you don't see...
Classic film
@@petermulder7480 Fun thing is that the movie was banned in Germany for over 40 years for its brutality, gruesome deaths and shocking violence . Funny because the movie doesn’t relies on violence or brutality. The most work has your mind, there is nearly zero violence on screen. Head cinema in combination with the soundtrack does the trick.
Franklin is my most hated victim of any of the major horror franchises.
I’ve seen TCM 74’ 200 or so times and it gets better every time I see it… I first saw it at the drive-in when I was 6 with my Dad and I was scared as hell, I had nightmares for years but I loved it… And when video rental center opened up in the 80’s I saw that beautiful painted cover of Leatherface with those crazy eyes coming through his mask and Sally’s huge eyeballs in the background and I remembered the horror I felt as a kid and couldn’t wait to watch it at home… It’s my favorite horror movie by far and my top 3 movie of all-time… It will always be a true classic ground-breaker…
I grew up with the original.
I prefer the '03 remake.
2003 isn't bad at all but nothing comes close to the original.
Whenever you watch something with notable raw production like the original, you never know what to expect, or how far the filmmakers intend to go. This subliminal uncertainty will then boost your anxiety levels throughout the movie, making the horror much more effective.
While I recognise the importance of Tobe Hooper's original, I have always preferred the remake. The original teens, with the exceltion of Franklin, are just so bland. The '04 version gives them some backstory, and final girl Erin brings the fight to the psychotic family, while Sally barely escapes with the help of others. Leatherface, the hitchhiker and the cook are absolute icons, but they all get eclipsed by R Lee Ermey's Hoyt, an absolute beast of a character. The remake also has a great opener with the OTHER hitchhiker and the beautiful long take of the aftermath of her suicide, which together with the drugs raises the stakes much more than the original. For true grit you can't beat '74, but as engaging stories go, '04 tops it for me...
03 remake
It's the only time I can honestly say that a remake is better than the original, I love TCM74 but the addition of Hoyt just cements TCM03 as the best, he was more terrifying than letherface!
This is so good 👍
R.I.P. Marilyn Burns
Gunnar Hansen
R. Lee Ermey Gunnery Sgt. USMC
I like both, but for vastly different reasons. To steal a line from Joe Bob, TCM '74 feels like it was made by a psychopath, which makes it really effective. I actually did a whole presentation in college arguing the case that TCM is the greatest film of all time, simply for how hard it nails accomplishing what it set out to do (I would also add that it was years before I saw Joe Bob essentially say the same during Dinners of Death). It's uncomfortable to watch, and almost feels like you're watching cut together crime scene footage at times.
By comparison, '03 is a much easier watch, with that layer of Hollywood sheen, and has prime Jessica Biel hotness, and R. Lee Ermey charisma to carry it, and I actually really like the end. It also hit during a time period in my life that I look on with a lot of fondness.
Thank You 😇
Both are great horror movies. The original has the gritty quality that makes it actually feel real, like somewhere in an isolated farmhouse that you drive past on a road trip, people like this could exist and it makes you extremely creeped out and curious about random homes.
The remake on the other hand is much less subtle but also has a very scary and disgusting quality about it and the house, family and situation itself is absolutely dreadful and terrifying, not to mention Leatherface himself being an undeniably horrifying unit as well as Sheriff Hoyt lightening the load for Leatherface by being a despicably sick sob and not having the only truly dreadful thing about the movie be the guy with the chainsaw.
Both are very different movies that should be respected and viewed depending on the kind of horror you’re in the mood for
1974 is a horror classic and one of my alltime favorites. But I still like 2003 a little more.
agreed
2003 is the best one. To me in my opinion.
Oooooo, yeah hard one but 74 for the win
The 2003 remake could really have used Bill Mosely for a hitch hiker/ Chop top character addition.
Im a die hard fan of the 74 classic 🤘 i love the 2003 version but the original was lightning in a bottle
You said Kemper in the remake was like a Franklin lol. I think you meant Morgan was the annoying one. People liked kemper
Most excellent 👌🪓❣️ Totally agree 👏
I watched '03 version first. It has more gore and blood than the original. I liked 03 first and still do like it more but it may be personal nostalgia. I found '03 version in a really difficult time in my life.
Trying to compare the remake (which I actually like) to the greatest horror movie ever is not even fair.
Jessica Biel wit the low cut jeans on makes it better😂
There should've been a round 8, Original Leatherface vs remake Leatherface. I'd be interested in seeing who wins that one. As to Leatherface's age, well, I do remember that in the 2008 prequel, it revealed that Leatherface was born sometime in the 1940s. I forget what year, I just remember it was after world war 2. I think it may have been 1947, same year Jason was born, so Leatherface is over 70, & getting around great for a man his age!
2006 prequel
Its hard to say that R. Lee did NOT steal the show in 2003. He's the only memorable character. And the sequel to the 2003 movie realized it and gave him a larger role in it.
Original is Top 10 films of all time for me. But I’m a fan of the remake also.
Originals like TCM and The Exorcist are also powerful because you have to factor in how incredibly shocking they were for their time. An effect you really can't get anymore thanks to years of in your face torture porn and the internet
I think Alfred Hitchcock needs to teach newer directors that sometimes... Less is more. I don't need to see the killer doing the killing to know a scary thing is present
I grew up in the 80's with the gore galore and even 20 year old me was like....yeah, whatever, we get it.
Cutaways and offscreen death is not a sign of "what's the matter you can't handle it" its a sign of less is more and imagination still counts.
Less is more is no longer unique. Punch the audience in the fucking mouth.
@@ferox965 .....punch em with my schlong
Without a doubt the remake is one of the better remakes out there… but the original is absolutely brilliant and a true horror classic and also a personal favourite of mine.
I love both but I watch 2003 more! Hope to vlog the house from that version sometime soon. Happy Holidays everyone.
Agree 💯 %
I saw the original in a theater. No film that came after showed more insanity, gruesomeness, and terror. The only thing later movies showed was gore, and that is not an improvement. I saw the 2003 version and only Ermey was memorable.
The original 1974 film MASSACRED the pointless remake on all fronts.
No debate, just a MASSACRE.
I love the 2nd film from the 80s
‘Only hardcore fans would know their names’ TCM ‘74? Or someone that watched it… they call each others’ names over and over in that film…. Maybe if you’d only seen the movie once…. Otherwise--yeah, we all know them. Anyone watching this channel-this video knows their damn names….. c’mon
John Larroquette thanks you!
2003 is the best n my book. Hell 2003 is 1 of my favorite horror movies
TCM 1974 is my all time favorite horror film, part 2 is a very close second, but I have a respect for the 2003 remake, but not the actor who played leatherface in it, what a piece of shit he is! But anyways, it’s always gonna be the original. And to put a opinion in on the whole debate of the cook, aka Drayton Sawyer, being a sibling or father of leatherface and his brothers, towards the end of part 2, when the house is falling apart, Drayton freaks out, like he does in 99.9 of the film, and yells to Chop Top “look what your brothers done?!” Seems like if they were all brothers, he’d have said “our” brother, or called him by name. As a dad myself, I often speak to my kids and say “your brother” or “your sister,” so even though many actors of the franchise have said he’s their brother, that line alone may prove otherwise
Now do one where you toss in the New Netflix version.....at least 2003 tried
2003 leatherface is the best without a doubt!
There is no other choice. The original will always be the best.
And in my opinion the next 3 are way better than any of the new ones.
Gotta give it up for McConaughey in 4. Lol
MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄⛄❄️🧑🎄🌨️
I thought the remake was the best one besides the original.
-Texas chainsaw massacre the original
-Blair witch project the original
-Sinister
-Jaws
Not necessarily in that order.
Just like the original Halloween , the original TCM is grossly overrated and boring to modern audiences . I’m sure if you grew up in this era , it would be shocking and scary . But I would give this W in almost every category to the 2003 remake .
Give me the remake
No contest The 1974 version is Hall of fame worthy. The 2003 version on the other hand is just Blasphemous.
Oh yes 😂
Naw the 2003 one is pretty good. Really the only one other than the original I think is good.
@@lesclaypoolonbass9431 To be fare I actually like all of them.
Tis the season 🎶 to be J😱LLY. 😂
You should do "Jacob's Ladder Vs Silent Hill".
Maybe which is just better as a horror film?
Personally I like Jacob's Ladder enough to say it's the best silent hill movie, I know that would piss a lot of people off, but I think the movies would be great to compete in this type of format for a video.
Dude, the original film wins all rounds...duh. 🙄
Original is one of the best horror films of all time
I'll probably get put on a hook for this, but I enjoyed the 2003 remake more for R Lee Emry alone.
agreed
As long as you agree the 2022 one is absolutely horrible you won’t
@@John-Doe-Yo CORRECT! 😄
Gay porn would be easier to watch then Franklin!
@@John-Doe-Yo Oh, I thought that movie was hilarious
The 1974 version would have definitely won, but unfortunately, Mr. Gunner Hansen passed away in 2015, meaning I have a significantly higher chance at scoring Mr. Andrew Bryniarski. Therefore, the 2003 version is superior, and Mr. Bryniarski is more than welcome to b*tching about Mr. Hansen all he wants in my Twitter DMs hit me up ❤️
I’m a huge fan of horror and love older and original movies but I’m going to have to disagree, I’ve always felt that the 2003 TCM was far better in all these departments than the original. Just my preference
If I'm honest, which I tend to be to many people's tears...LMAO. I'll take the 2003 remake, it just feels better to me, much like Last On The Left and Hills Have Eyes remakes. Sometimes, The remakes, and even in some cases, the sequels or prequels are better than the original.
i like the old one but 2003 is way better
I gotta disagree; the original TCM is pretty lame IMO. I first saw it in the 80's as a young teen and it scared me, but back then it didn't take much to scare me. After rewatching it in the early 2000s, I was disappointed and felt that it failed to live up to it's reputation. While it does have some great moments, for me it just doesn't compare to the 2003 remake. I thought the remake was much more frightening, more intense, more suspenseful, had better characters, had actual gore... I'll always find it superior.
Remake ftw.
Yes the original is more way more unsettling, but I can't say I'm entertained by it. I just feel bad watching it. Similar to watching rape in a movie. The remake DOES entertain me though. The original is better movie, but I'd rather watch the remake.
The 2003 version is better in every way the original is unwatchable because the character's have less character then a door mat
03 version is better
Why even do these face offs when you are clearly bias towards the original? Its pretty pointless.
03 is better
Both are good, but the remake is superior on almost every level. The only thing that makes the original decent is how dated it is, which adds to its allure, it’s not remotely scary or intimidating.
Yeah having someone who loves the original movie would pick the original one to win lmao 🤣 2003 leather face was more scary
Thats what i said too. Most of these face offs are pointless.
2003 movie showed the van and Franklins wheelchair from the original. Which would make the Bay movie a sequel.
Probably an easter egg
