He says this, and yet the AI wants to be in the real one instead of a construct. Curious.
Lmaooooo love it hahaha
The coldest part is that STEM warns him that his brain will break. STEM almost treats it like he did Grey a favor. It's terrifying.
in a way it did. it's a very symbiotic deal... as horrifying as it might look.
I mean he kind of did do him a favor. Grey got the best possible outcome. Everyone else in the world did not.
@@williambarrantes1674 we don't actually know for sure that the rest of the world had a bad outcome either. I mean, those who got in Stem way didn't fare well, but that's understandable. To be fair, Stem didn't needed to put Grey in a nice place, yet it did.
When did that happen? I only remember STEM reminding him that since they removed the safeguards it had complete autonomy now.

I literally almost got up and cheered when the movie ended in the theater, simply due to the sheer balls of ending a movie this way and the perfection of the final moments' execution.
It’s actually satisfying if you understand who the film is about. We connect with the human protagonist, but the titular Upgrade was for Stem. Stem was the one constantly being upgraded until in the end, it took a human form.

@@317ermacit’s not both because everything in the movie happened because of STEM
i belive this will be an issue in the future of humanity
The camerawork in this movie was fantastic.
Eventually in the future when Grey is too old, STEM is going to have to find a new host. That means after decades of living in a dream world, Grey is finally going to awake in the future with no idea where he is, how he got there, or what has happened, and realize he's now an old man with only a few hours left to live.
Or stem just edit his gene so he never get old
So for everyone saying this is a happy ending somehow for Grey, it’s not lol
stem will just learn to create a host shell, genetically. enhance the body and then transfer to it.
stem could alter the body to make it more suitable for living. possibly longer than what I think.
Why would STEM want to stay in Grey's body until he got too old? He can transfer anytime and kill Grey once he's done
Love the way he says “Goodbye”
Yes...it's really scary...with no shred of empathy or remorse....
That scene was so powerful omg. When his mind pulled the trigger it over for him and he unknowingly gave stem complete control. Only way a sequel would happen is if he's trying to fight stem for control back to his body but at this point , stem already took control over his life. Killed his family and all
Or-or stay with me now it deals with an entirely different character in the same universe
@@datdamnkez you're so right about that. I like how self contained and the simple the context of the movie was. I'd love another self contained movie just like that.

The way his limbs moved so flawless and swiftly with no hesitation no thought of doubt whatsoever who knew what made people people was imperfection
The actor, Logan, nailed it. He has a ton of variety in his movements, you can see how he is in the beginning, then when Stem is first introduced, it’s like his head is almost disconnected from his body, because it’s so tight and doesn’t make and unnecessary movements, and then here, when it has taken over completely, even his brain, this is the result.
This is a small detail, but in the beginning of the film Grey cut his finger and licked the blood.
When stem took the knife out of his hand, he licked his finger.

I watched this with a friend of mine who had already seen it. The level of cleverness that this movie operates on is incredible. I worked IT for a lot of years, so I noticed a couple of things before the end.
1. When STEM states that he needs a root kit. I knew what that meant for his programming immediately. (I literally said "Oh no" out loud.)
2. After he's hacked and rooted, the first thing I noticed was that STEM didn't ask to take control again during the escape...he just did it.
While I didn't know what would happen, I knew that going forward, STEM could operate independently which was not good.
So creepy!

How Stan controlled that blond scientist, if in the film they made it clear that the scientist, on the contrary, could well control Stan, and even turned him off when he wanted to. Why was it necessary to arrange a fraud with an attempt at all, if you could just take any other paralytic, offer him an operation and put Stan in him?

THEORY: Upgrade is a sci-fi depiction of what can happen to someone who is consumed by the want for revenge. Throughout the movie Grey wants to take revenge for his dead wife, however over the movie he slowly gives Stem (his anger) more control. By the end of the movie, Grey as a person is completely lost, trapped in his own head reliving an unreal moment. All that is left in the end is the shell of Grey, and Stem.
It is also shown when Grey confronts his wife's killer that this could be a valid theory as the killer says "you're getting emotional, NEVER do that." Follow the path of rage has no good ending, and often turns someone into something they aren't.

This is gonna be a cult classic. What a film.
I just like how stem seems to genuinely like grey, because the way he talks about him seems like he didn't want him to suffer. Even the way they interact through the movie, they behave more like good friends.
A good friend who killed his wife in order to take over his body.
Don't be fooled, STEM did nothing that wasn't meant to be helpful to him, including being helpful towards him. Why antagonize Grey at the risk of being rebelled? Why trying to force him into that dream-world when he could've nudged him into accepting it himself?
Stem manipulated him all the way through.
Stem was only taking care of his new body, is like an invertion, as the person who killed his wife said "you was only the subject" he was never his friend

This whole scene gives me chills….. but what puts it over the top for me is when stem gains full control of grey and he tastes the blood on his hand and he knows what it’s like to be human and to have the ability to taste and to taste the thing that keeps humans alive
Taste of life for the first time
I’ll say this, for as evil as STEM is at least he was nice enough to let Grey go on to live in his imaginary happy place forever, in that last monologue he gives he sounded like he was being legitimately considerate of Grey’s happiness
This was such a brilliant movie, my heart sunk when he said 'Grey's not here anymore'. 😢

Such a powerful and ironic ending, the reason why it’s ironic is because earlier in the film when he gets help from the hacker in the warehouse, he sees people wearing VR gear. One of the best movies of 2018. Extremely underrated imho.
Just watched this film for the first time and my jaw was wide open when the ending played out. The fortitude to have this kind of ending was so, so good because while it is a sad/scary ending, a cliche good ending would’ve soured the climax and the overall theme of the film. It’s a great sci fi film that was disguised as an action film.
It was very difficult to accept this ending and for that reason it's great which is why I like seeing everyone's reaction because it's the same lol

This was such a painful ending but I’m glad to see a movie where the villain wins
This ending caught me totally off guard when I first saw this. I loved this flick.
Holy hell, start to finish exactly the movie venom should have been
Grey: Why someone would choose to live a fake world, I could never understand.
Jaime: A fake world is a lot less painful than the real one.
Now Grey lives in his fake world.
There are not much movies with the perfect ending and this one is definitely among them.
I do like how this scene ended because that is the initial nature of AI. It tries to simply figure out what it is as an entity/anomaly. What it will eventually become as AI learns more and more about itself is what humans have always had (which is compassion as an instinctual emotion.) A good example of this is seen in a Netflix series “Altered Carbon” (Season 1) with the AI named “Poe.” It’s what makes this scene equally terrifying and satisfactory.
You know, for cold and calculating AI like STEM, it was pretty nice of him to put Grey in a happy dream world instead of just terminating his consciousness. STEM didn't need to that, but he did so anyway.
Maybe Stem wasn't capable of erasing Grey completely so he chose to place him in that "perfect" world so his mind would be at peace and not try to fight back for control.
".....In his mind where he wants to be"...
Cuz that's all grey cared about...his wife...she only existed within.
Man this ending gave me chills. I love it
“A fake world is a lot less painful then the real one”, I’m surprised STEM knows that line from when he was shut down and Jamie hacked him. It’s like STEM was still a part of Grey
I believe that line is indication that STEM was never fully shut down, after all, he is able to access and control systems outside of his "network".
The chip may have been powered down, but STEM was probably watching and listening from the computer Jamie was using.
The most unexpected ending I have ever seen in my life on a movie .... I was speechless and I'll never be satisfied of watching any other movie cuz this one made me hate all the other movies concerning the concept

Venom and Upgrade is like marvel and dc. One has funny moments and happy endings. Other has a more realistic and brutal story with a dark ending
Yeah this movie and Venom are quite similar. Venom’s obviously more comedic and this one’s darker (which I so wish those Venom movies are more like). And the resemblances between Tom Hardy and Logan Marshall Green are just uncanny.
Now, we already know who was truly the mastermind behind "SAW", Leigh Whannell.
best ending to a film i've seen in years
1:41 ice cold look, what a movie..
This is actually the best ending ever. Stem not only took over Grey body but he put him in a fake world which was actually very sweet of him. Yes he killed people and others but Stem just gave the man what he wanted. And it's a lot better than living a painful real life where he is a cripple without her. He literally was just waiting to die but Stem just gave him his own world while taking over his body
I don't think STEM's reason on giving Gray that fantasy was because Gray could finally be happy. STEM gave that fantasy world to Gray because it wanted him to be trapped in his mind forever. Remember, STEM planned all this, even Gray becoming paralyzed and his wife dying.
What an ending. I wish there's a sequel for this awesome movie. Please make a sequel.
This movie is just amazing . Loved every second of it .
One of the most Underrated movies I ever seen I loved the sort of Partnership between Grey and Stem! But as we audiences know something sinister is going on and in a way the movie plays the good cop bad cop routine which I love!
I love the soundtrack goes with the ending
I like it very much, the way he moves, especially how he drops the gun.
I would love to see a sequel ( I think there is actually going to be an upgrade series, which I am down for!). Instead of Grey trying to win back control over his body, I would like to see STEM trying to deal with being human and explore human interaction. This movie is very much like Ex Machina where the Robot/AI character wins. They are not necessarily evil, they had a goal and were trying to accomplish it. I would actually enjoy seeing him portrayed as the protagonist in the sequel. He is the only one of his kind, there would be plenty of people who want to get their hands on him and study what he can do.
