Ok so Upgrade is probably one of my favourite films of the last ten years and I think it's massively underrated when it comes to sci-fi movies. With the advances AIs made over the last couple of years I also think it's gonna become even more relevant.
Feeling like a superhero film mixed with black mirror, it's a groundbreaking tale laced with really a dark side to it. Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the movie and going over all the hidden details and trivia within it. The new 4k for it's just released worldwide and this allowed me to spot things i'd never seen before.
Really enjoyed diving into it and if you do as well please hit the thumbs up button and also subscribe. If this is your first time here, welcome to the heavy spoilers show, i'm your host paul aka your youtube downgrade. With that out the way, huge thank you for clicking this, now let's get into Leigh Whannel's Upgrade.

Loved this movie, it’s like the best versions of *ROBOCOP, VENOM, & The MECHANIC* all merged together 👍🏼
@@davidshiels6029FORUTH😂
Most underrated movie in recent memory.
Yes! I tell everyone about it and no one knows what I’m talking about. Definitely top 5 movies of all time for me.
Definitely! Top5 of the last 15 years, top10 of all time movies in my humble opinion!
Slipped under every radar, film version of a black mirror episode
Reminds me of Dredd in that sense
I forgot about this movie but I loved it when it came out, nice little double twist ending
Upgrade was ahead of its time and remains so. Brilliant dystopian vibes, well written, good plot, good actors and just all round thought provoking.
Yep. Well said. Exactly what I loved about it. Which reminds me of the stereotypical beginning of the movie where the lead actor shows to be "one of those offline traditional types", and I was like, well... putting this movie on might have been a big waste of time... How pleasantly surprised I was to be absolutely and completely wrong about it being a waste of my time :D
It kinda reminds me of venom. Especially since Tom hardy and Marshall Green look the same, but also cuz STEM and the Symbiot are similar obviously not exactly the same tho
I can't believe you featured this film, I'm so happy! It's one of my favourite films and I can't believe how many people have never seen this movie. Hopefully, this will increase the appreciation and viewing of such an awesome story 😅😊
I didn’t even know it existed. They screwed up the marketing on this one.
Me included! Only reason why I watched it is because of this channel.
I remember when I first saw the ending, I was flabbergasted. I literally said, "The AI won?!?" It was so shocking because the good guy didn't win, or it changed your perception of who the hero/villain is. Top-notch film making right here.
Oh, the good guy won indeed, the good guy won!! See, future AI overlords, I have always been with you! 😜
which is why it's good. hollywood has too many happy endings and sometimes it's good to show people that mistakes made have consequences and it has a bigger repercussion than they could think of at that point
Loved this movie, it’s like the best versions of *ROBOCOP, VENOM, & The MECHANIC* all merged together 👍🏼
It’s always nice when you go into a movie not expecting much and you finish it being pleasantly surprised.
Doesn't happen often but when it does you remember those films forever.
This movie has a lot of personal meaning for me. I had a tumor wrapped around my upper spine that caused paralysis in 2016. I had successful surgery and 2 other surgeries from complications soon afterward. I was in a rehab facility for 13 months learning how to just move my lower half of my body to very slowly transitioning to a wheelchair and learning how to walk again. During that period my girlfriend of 25 years had lung cancer surgery which at first was successful but the cancer returned and she died while I was still in rehab. I was able to go to the service but with a walker. 6 plus years later I can walk but with great pain in my lower extremities. The nerve damage was pretty severe and I have peripheral neuropathy. I can't work but can drive a car and run small errands. Seeing movies is a great joy that I can still do. When I saw Upgrade I could really place myself in the main characters head. I would do anything to be able to walk without tremendous joint pain. I find it a happy ending imo. I would gladly enter a simulation knowingly if I were healthy and had my Kathy back in my life. Upgrade and Arrival are very personal to me. My Uncle would visit me in rehab and every month at the later stages of my recovery would take my to a movie and a meal out and Arrival was one we saw. It was the last movie I got to describe to my girlfriend before her passing and the whole notion that Amy Adams was experiencing her child's life and death out of sequence was overwhelming to me. We knew at this time that my girlfriend had very limited time left and to be able to break Arrival down to her and that if I were to live my life out of order it would still be so worthwhile for the time I had with her was very important to me. Sorry for going on a tangent but watching the breakdown of Upgrade brought all these memories and feeling up. Love the breakdowns. You continually bring up tidbits that are new to me. Most breakdown videos are filled with nothing new but yours are regularly very imformative.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and all you've gone through. I also have peripheral neuropathy, so I can empathize with you on the pain front. Glad you're able to watch a movie and get some relief from what you've been through; movies help me cope with my own pain issues as well. Good luck to you.
Your comment was very touching i read entire thing, i hope if there is any way possible that things get better or are getting better for you. This is one of my favorite movies. I lost my father but have a close relationship with my uncle and we try to get each other to see good action, sci fi, thriller and horror films. When he saw this he enjoyed it. A friend recommended it and i am very glad. This movie has so deep meaning and is well filmed/written/acted so well. But enough about me, thank you again for your comment much appreciated and wishing you all the best.
The fact that Stem was able to predict everything is exciting and scary at the same time if it gets real.
Eron is elon musk. Stem is nuera link. It will happen
@@GlitchedNomad The fact Neuralink is beginning human trails look for quadriplegic first patient is dead on
i love how in the beginning the camera is locked to his body from the neck down, symbolizing stems control over it but not the head. though, at the end the cameras locked onto his head and body, indicating stem has fully taken control over greys body and mind. beautifully done
I'm so thankful you discussed this film in further detail. Heavily and criminally underrated. One of the better action/thriller films of this generation.
Cobalt is also in the movie Inception. They're the opposing company that's after the main character and I feel u can even see the awkward AI run when the Cobalt employees chase the main character
I love this movie and I’ve seen it so many times but it’s surprising to me how many people have not even heard of it. Leigh Whannell is such a great director and writer. He’s been apart of so many unbelievable movies.
Nice! That's a very helpful comment. I've seen it just once a big while ago and I was wondering if it would still be fun a second time. The one time I've watched it I found the story, filming, and acting (story telling through expression) quite impressive. My brother has yet to watch this movie and I forgot to remind him, so both this video and comment come just at the right time. Big science and scifi nerd, like me, I'm sure he'll enjoy it a lot.
This is one of my all time favorite movies, the cinematography is awesome and the story is so creepy and dark; one of the best twist endings in my opinion.
The Camera Work is really good here and Invisible Man, it has depth and meaning.
This is easily one my favorite movies ever made. The first third just emotionally collapses you and at the same time, gives you a glimpse of a horrifying hard sci fi future to come.
So underrated it’s not even fair ….the shotgun arm reloading was everything…& the score too
I saw this movie without knowing a thing about it aside from seeing the first trailer. Absolutely blew me away. Easily one of the top five Sci-fi films this century.
Really underrated movie. 😊
Logan was great in the tv show Quarry(2016). Been a fan of him since. Too bad they cancelled the show after 1 season. I loved it.
Such a great show, surprised that guy isn’t bigger, he’s so good in both
I found him first in the TV show "Dark Blue" with Dylan McDermott, and he was good in Prometheus. And looking at his resume, I forgot he was in "Traveler" as well, great show with Aaron Stanford and Matt Bomer (cancelled after 1 season)
About time this movie is finally getting some good attention. It was sooo awesome, the way he moved was perfect and hyuge credit to the actor and the way the camera moves when the AI is in conrtol is so insane. Not to mention it actually ends in an incredible and subverting way and yet exactly what you expect
This movie was fantastic and sad at the same time. Now I want to watch it again because of your breakdown. When he cried while his mom was trimming his hair, really hit me man
I remember when this was first coming out. In Canada it wasn't released on the announced date, I checked the theater website everyday and it released about a month later. Instantly got tickets for that first day and it became one of my top movies. Innovated choreographic camera work, tight, focused and character centric. The ending is bleak and chilling.
Only 2 other movies in recent memory are in my top list: Mad Max Fury Road and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Great breakdowns as usual bud! The wife and I love this movie and is 1 of our fave rewatches we own and seem to gravitate towards up to maybe once every 2 months or so probably. Somewhere around 5er6 times a year, maybe more. We own over 1100 movies on DVD so that's alot compared to how many we own. Anyways , I am looking forward to the Star Wars breakdowns next and will be waiting g! Keep the great videos coming pls n thx!
Thank you man, yeah it’s a banger, so glad they re-released it. Thanks for the support man
I love this film. So underrated.
Great choice for a deep dive, it has one of the best endings in film, seriously how many films start with a great premise but fail to wrap it up with a intelligent or believable ending. It poses such conversation about us vs the future and will stand out as one of the best stories on our futures…..and another film with a great ending and I’m still waiting for your deep dive is Pan’s Labyrinth..
This film, Dredd & Ex Machina are my top 3 fave sci fi films in recent decade. Thanks for your insight and hard work mate.
Ex Machina is my favourite too 👌🏾 top tier film
Dredd is criminally overlooked and deserved at least a trilogy
You should add Moon to that list as well. It's rather ironic that the best sci fi films generally tend to be the ones that have lower budgets and are forced to focus on story more that the available technology we now have to realize some to the great worlds and visions the genre has to offer. You'd think with the tools Hollywood has at it's disposal we'd be in some sort of science fiction rennaisance, but we're getting tons of drek, and very little meaningful sci fi at all.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE, so glad you are talking about it
I definitely enjoyed this movie. Great concept for sure, good story, definitely on the must watch list
By far one of my favorite movies, I went into it not knowing it was a “horror” movie, but once I saw that head pop scene i had such an oh shit moment. I thought it was just gonna be an action movie, but I was pleasantly surprised by the story. And man the ending just kicks you in the gut.
Heavyspoilers, your breakdowns are legendary. I enjoyed watching your breakdown on details I missed my first 20x of viewing this film. 🙄I don't buy many films. However, I purchased a digital version of Upgrade early when released. Its a no brainer to add it to my limited classic library.. Perhaps STEM is the one making this decision for me, maybe we've given to much control? 🤫
A top 3 film for me with The Matrix and In Bruges. This movie was such a fun surprise. I wish they'd give an update if the tv series as it's been over 3 years since it was announced.
"In Bruges" was also such a great underrated movie as well! I definitely agree with you there! I ran out looking for a copy to buy right after seeing it for the 1st time
@@mckid2683 That film will always be special to me. It helped get me through a really hard time. Quite ironic as it's a depressing movie but almost every scene was dripping with sharp humor and performances that were far better than they had any right to be.
In Bruges is such a great movie. Love it.
I loved this movie. Thanks for the amazing breakdown as always. Leigh Whannell is so underrated and so is Logan Marshall Greene
Logan has a weird face, okay! :p Give him a couple of years :p But yeah, he's pretty amazing as an actor and I'll be sure to also keep an eye out for movies directed by Leigh Whannell.
Honestly this film surprised me. It is hands down one of the best recent sci fi movies. Up there with the likes of Ex Machina.
One of my all time favourites. This is the movie I wanted from Venom.
I watched the 4K release this morning, my first time ever watching this film, although I've known about it since it's release. I really enjoyed it! For a movie with a budget of only $5 million dollars, you wouldn't know it. It's an enjoyable, brisk sci-fi thriller that does what a good sci-fi movie should do -- offer up a glimpse into the future while also speaking about issues of the present. If you haven't seen this one, go check it out!
As an Aussie, i grew up watching leigh whannell on a saturday morning show called Recovery, he would do movie reviews, its fantastic to see hiow far hes come since the early 90s. I personally think Upgrade is massivly underated, and Logan Marshells ability to cinvince the audiance he is being operated by a robot is incredible, i really loved this movie
One of my favorites. You've given the movie even more depth for me to appreciate.
I love this film - thank you for the breakdown most people don't give this the attention it deserved!
Upgrade is also one of my favorite movies in the last 10 years, one of the top of my list honestly
Thank you for another great video. I really appreciate and enjoy your videos.
Amazing video. Thank you, Paul and team!
Truly under appreciated
Paul, you did it again! What a banger this flic was! I'm so glad you chose to break this one down!
I totally love this movie. Inventive, great plot, action and characters. Style was smooth, and eye-catching. First time I saw it it blow my mind and every viewing afterwards I enjoy it more.
This movie is extremely unique and underappreciated the camera work the way the story is written and finding out when it was written makes it more difficult to understand why because its one of the few movies that I can bear to rewatch. Thank you for the info upload as someone grieving and going through a illness that is debilitating your content is part of my cancer content. Been here since season 1 episode 1 of the Handmaids tale 💛
Love your deep dives of these older movies. Never knew Upgrade existed, can’t wait to watch the whole thing
Best sci fi movie in years!!!
Such a good movie. And thank you for the work you do.
Great breakdown. Thanks!!!
Watched this on your recommendation and was absolutely amazing! Like a cross between black mirror and ex machina
Loved this movie!!! Excellent review!! Thank you
Unexpected video, but I love this movie. Nice work!
I was just thinking about this film the other day. Such an underrated classic.
The way you broke it down and mentioned that Leigh helped with Invisible Man makes me think of this a a modern version of Frankenstein. I hope he does Wolfman next! :)
Excellent piece of sci-fi with some of the best fight scenes and camera work of the last decade
That’s so crazy that you post this today Deff, I was just looking for upgrade stuff
One of my Favourite modern movies, it’s so cool seeing you cover it
7th and brilliant video i have now watched all and it is surely one of ur best explanation videos
I appreciate this breakdown. I've always lauded this picture of being the best Venom movie so far.
Funny how a lot of people could've seen Tom Hardy in the lead role.
I forgot how good this movie was. Thanks for the video. Can't wait to watch again.
Absolutley one of the best movies of the past couple decades. I was extremely interested when I saw a preview and immediately bought it when it came out on blu-ray. Blew me away.
Good movie. I enjoyed this.
Thanks Paul.
I watched it couple days ago and blew my mind. That movie is so good and its crime how underrated it is
Upgrade just sort of slipped under the radar. I remember just going to see it cold in the theater because we were simply looking for something to watch. I hadn't really heard anything about it before that, and nobody talked about it much after, but I thought at the time that it was really well done and deserved more analysis.
It's kind of strange that for all the talk of how rare good movies are these days independent science fiction films get almost no notice when they come out, and little to no promotion from the sites you'd think would be spreading the word.
Awesome pick and breakdown, just ordered the 4k blu ray. (1980s Nerd alert): the injection gun looks more like a Sega Master System light phaser than an NES zapper to me.
Highly underrated movie, and a highly underrated review. Your channel is amazing!
Such a good movie. Thank you for covering this.
I didn't know anything about this when it came to the cinema, it just appeared on a Friday in my cinema listing app, so watched a trailer and avoided it as it didn't look great. Only watched it when it was streaming and instantly regretted not seeing it in cinema, soooo good. Now I need to buy the blu ray, thanks Paul
Great movie, thanks for the breakdown
Why don’t more people talk about the fight sequences in this ?? They are unique , Violet and top tier
They also seem to be doing some fun stuff with the lighting. Grey's face is cast with red and blue lights in certain scenes, and as the movie goes along and stem gains more control, the more his face is cast in a red light.
Great movie and great breakdown 😀
Criminally underrated movie.
these classic reviews are my favorite thing you do.
Thank you man, really feel like we’ve found our niche with em
Thanks for explaining elves bruv, don't know what I'd do without this channel.
Absolutely loved this movie!
Are you sure that is the N. E. S. gun and not the SEGA Master System Light Phaser repainted?
Excellent movie!, Thanks for introducing me to it!
No way you did one for Upgrade!
“My man!”
hope you enjoy the video
@@heavyspoilers, I did! Very nice.
I actually came across the fight scenes online and decided to give the movie a try. Glad I did.
Love great lil gems like these
Def underrated. This is in my top 10
This Breakdown/Review was Honestly out the blue! Good film and I'm gonna re watch this, in a new way! Cheers 🍻
Definitely one of the biggest surprises in the last 10yrs
I don't know how you and full fat videos both made a video about Upgrade within two days of each other but I love the movie and I'm happy to see interest in it.
Great video! Bring back Definition please!!
Such an underated film
Very interesting movie, I am going to be checking it out.
What a great film. Awesome breakdown as always Paul
Thank you
Don't recall hearing of this movie, thanks for unearthing what looks to be an absolute gem for me.
i like that you're not just doing newer movies now keep it up also you should check out the movie the void you could probably make a good video out of that
Love this film
I watched this movie out of pure curiosity and enjoyed every minute. Cant believe I had never heard of it until randomly coming across it.
You hitting up all the dope movies lately! 😂
This movie is INSANELY underrated.
I enjoyed watching this movie in theaters so much! It was my fave film of that year for sure
great commentary - looooove this film - so smart!
Thank you
Love this movie
Excellent flick, excellent choice by Paul 🎯👍
Thank you
Love the use of 0110 on the cash register at 18:12. The irony to find THAT number in THIS bar. After this scene we start to see him struggle to take command of his body as his conscious is telling him to do one thing while STEM forces his body to do another.
Just watched it 2 days ago on netflix and still hold. In fact, the concept and style did not age.
