Sanjay Bhansali is confusing his mother's culture of Hyderabad with Lahore Punjab , just like India especially bollywood confuses language, attire, culture, places and LOOKS of Indian Muslims with Pakistanis and Pakistan. This is height of ignorance. Heera Mandi is in Lahore Punjab ( the real punjab) and lingo Franka, culture, dress of Heera mandi has always been Punjabi. Why are these women doing addab and are in Lucknow Hyderabadi attire? Who gave Sanjay the right to make movies on places and cities he has no knowledge of. First learn the culture, and language of Mumbai, Nagaland, Oddissa, Bihar, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerela, West Bengal, Karnataka etc and then present places and cities parents and grand parents of Bollywooders left over 70 years ago.. Total propaganda movie.

Being a Lahori, I partially agree with you. But the thing is Lahore was much more diverse back before partition than what it is now, and Heeramandi used to have courtesans from all parts of India and even Central Asia, not just from Punjab. There's no way that we can compare the Heeramandi of Pre-Partition Lahore with that of today's backward Punjabi-centric Heeramandi.

A part of me felt like this too but I feel as though this step is equally necessary for the current position the entertainment market is in. By putting his work on Netflix as a series, he will reach a much more diverse audience I feel, because lets be honest, if it was a Bollywood movie it would only be watched in cinemas by desi people. In Netflix it will catch the eye of a lot more foreigners.
Do you remember how the censor board made sanjay change padmavat? The amount of criticism and hate he received before the film was released? With Netflix, he can bypass all that and have much more creative freedom. This will be interesting to watch, to see what his work will be like under Netflix and the extent of his creativity.

We need to stop comparing Tawaifs to the average prostitutes. They may have began running the brothels under British rule, but Tawaifs were COURTESANS. Best compared to Geishas of Japan. Masters of culture, art, and language.

Yeah in certain regions they ended up that way (wiki knowledge) but at their peak they were extremely talented women who had trained all their childhood to entertain. Artists of all sorts of entertainment arts be it dance, songs, riddles, mind games, etc. I honestly think tawaifs and geishas were really cool people, I can't imagine being a person having so many talents, true artists.
