My name’s Ed Pratt and from March 2015 to July 2018 I pedalled a unicycle 22,000miles around the world. Over that time I crossed 4 continents and performed over 12 million pedal rotations on my 40kg, 36’’ touring unicycle. When I finally retuned home after 3 years I became the first person to ever officially ride a unicycle around the world. But actually, that last bit's not true… let me explain...

Guinness to me is for people who want to sit in a bath of beans for a week. What you did Ed, was far greater than that.
Haha, well put!
@@SPASMODICIND best comment on CZcams
Too true!
i dont have a problem with any "record" that can be reasonably proven to have happened. if Guinness wants its book to be written a certain way then so be it. but not being accepted by them does not remove even 1% of Ed's achievement. it sounds like Guinness wants there to be more of an athletic and luck based record for this category. making it tens of thousands of miles with no injury that downs you for more than 2 weeks requires considerable luck. taking breaks like Ed did lets your body heal and reduces chance of injury, waiting out the winter removes tons of risk. these things i am perfectly fine with. imho this record is more about mental toughness and less about athleticism and luck.
bloody hell mate, that was well said
You literally wrote, stared in, filmed, edited and published your own world record. I don't need anyone else to say you hold this world record.
Congrats and very well done.
Yes exactly what I was telling people. How many actual miles did he do going back and forth for those killer long distance shots. Whole lot more then just around the world

@@mrstrong5695 not irrelevant for those who do ultimately want the verifiable record. But the record isn't the be-all-end-all, Ed did ultimately opt to ignore 2 of their criteria to give the ride genuine meaning and ensure his safety, which is more important. While I think 2 weeks is short considering the scale of the journey, passing through the antipodal points for me would be the minimum criteria to really say you cycled around the world, otherwise you could just end up wobbling through a single hemisphere in a 'sort of' loop and miss out on so many precious sights.

*different. If you get the correct answer, it wasn't a wrong formula to begin with.
Bingo Bango No if you use a completely different way unrelated to the unit to solve a problem then they could get mad
@@Death_Korps_Officer Technically you can use the wrong formula and get the right answer given the right numbers, but otherwise if it were to be +/-1 off, the formulas would give completely different numbers, happened 3 times in my math class, and 5 times in physics/astronomy. That was like 10 years ago, and I can't remember what the numbers and formulas were. XD
Just think about plotting 2 lines on a graph, unless they are parallel, they will cross at some point, and it is at that point where you get the right answer using the wrong formula.

For those of you saying, "he got/deserved the record anyway"... you're completely missing the point!
The point is that it's *better* that he didn't get the record because it means he lived his own life, made his own choices, and made the journey *for himself*.
If you're stuck thinking "he deserves the record" you're stuck thinking "other people's metrics are more important than your own".
Imagine if he followed the rules precisely and then at the end said, for example, "yeah, I did it... but I just wish I'd spent more time with that lovely girl I met ... I regretted that decision every single day of my last 630 days ... and for what? A record that no-one's ever going to look up?!"
And then he'd give the advice, "If you ever consider doing such a thing, make sure you do it for you, not for the record. It's what I should have done".
Perfect explanation William. Spot on!

I'm currently in the process of packing up my life to leave, so it really is beyond "inspired".
Thanks. You're marvellous.
Having a Guinness record is as valuable as you make it to be, their records are not "official", no such thing exists. I'm just not sure it's necessarily better, but I agree Guinness is just a private company and they don't owe you a record even if people think you deserve it.
Same with stuff like the modern Olympics, some people spend a life time trying to achieve a medal, but is it worth it? And we agree, that's the actual question, indeed.
Like around the world in 80 days. The protagonist goes back to save the love of his life when he could have done the record much shorter.

@@josephwilson3180 I dunno, it sounds needlessly restrictive, and a different rule that captures a similar spirit would probably be better. Hi Ed, I remember had a talk with you a morning (going to work:)) in Edinburgh, just at the back of the castle. That's cool memory thanks to your video. I hope you are well and continue to have fun with life.
Awesome video man God bless you bother!!
You’ve completed an epic ride, truly inspiring, thanks for all the films
You’re an absolute legend and inspiration to so many. Looking forward to your next adventure
About 20 years ago a guy was making a USA cross country ride. It was in the popular newspaper from Seattle. I was out in the little town of Chelan when he passed through. I thought many people would be standing on the street waving at him as he passed through but no, it was just me. No one else knew about it.
Ed, your videos are so enjoyable! Kudos to you from a fellow traveler, though my adventures are much more mundane, the Pacific Crest Trail, and Currently the Continental Divide Trail, across the US.
I particularly liked your pictures with the folks you met, and your great smile. I'd have to say that of all of the people who went around the world in one way or another, you may have done it with the greatest sense of fun.
Also, one of the things the Guiness committee didn't get is that, from what I gather from your video, you did this trip around the world unsupported. It was just you, on one wheel, with a few water bottles and a tent and a huge grin. As a long distance hiker, I appreciate your solo effort.
One wheel track around the world. Awesome Ed. Waiting for you next adventure. Hopefully I find my own adventure soon.
I happy to hear you made it your trip, and not for the purpose of getting your name in some antiquated book. You cycled around the world, and nothing can take that away from you. 👍
What an absolute madman. Wish we could all take an adventure like you
No worries. Those experiences are well worth the missed record. Good job friend!
don't be fulled by guiness, I think the effort you put in, deserves two entries in that book
Make that an entire page, or two
Yay another Ed Pratt video!
2:27 I've been there before! I've sat on the memorial, it was wild for me to see the camera pan out and reveal it's somewhere I know :D
Honestly..... I respect you more for taking the opportunity and actually enjoying it. You lived the dream. There is so much more that I want to know about this trip.
It's unfair how he's journey has bad weather at some point
It sucks but that’s life

How is weather unfair?
Weather is one of the most fair things there is.
😅 no, expect bad weather if you travel around the world
0:44 Draw me like one of your French girls
Good for you Ed, I grew up in South Somerset, Dowlish Wake in fact. Now in South Africa, so if your travels take you to the bottom right of Africa do call in. Love seeing bits of Somerset I know.
You would think extreme weather would count as an impassable barrier. Awesome video! 👍
Rules and regulations they get in the way of everything that is good anyway Ed you did an excellent job and I’ve enjoyed watching your videos
Rules and regulations are the only things that keep us from anarchy and corrupt people from killing off more than half of us. Or would you prefer to die of cancer due to having asbestos in your buildings again?
But asbestos in buildings across the country across the world should be paid for by the government to be removed with government employees as they made a fortune out of taxing the companies that produced it
@@leslierhodes5467 As opposed to the billions the companies who made the products made off us selling us products THEY KNEW were bad for us, while they tried to suppress data that showed it was?
Get a brain.
Rules and regulations made by corrupt organisations are bad.
Rules and regulations made by the people for the people are good.
For someone mad enough to do this good on him for for not going for the record to make sure he doesn't get hit by a car in icy roads
They didn't tell him to go over icy roads. Poor planning.
@@astroknight5 Winter is winter. Unless he was able to do it in 3 seasons, there's not really anywhere else you can cycle.
I like how you had a stroke midway through writing the comment but apparently recovered
i had a stroke reading this
I absolutely love your attitude about not reaching the Guinness World Record!!! Well done on your adventures though, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them!! All the best.
You are wise beyond your years, Ed. You are Maslow's fully self-actualized man. You have given us so much and I thank you for it. Keep on keepin' on. All our lives are the better for it.
