    There’s a lot of video footage from my round the world unicycle ride that for whatever reason I never got around to editing and releasing. Most of this stuff was from 'YEAR 1' of the trip, when my editing skills were still pretty sketchy and I didn’t take the production of these videos as seriously. As a result, this footage was just left stored and untouched on hard drives never to see the light of day. That is until now!
    Please enjoy this one-off video from my time cycling an extremely remote road in Kazakhstan.

    I live in a small city in china, often go out walking in the hills around my city. His experience with the people helping out and generally just being lovely is very true here too. I have bumped into loads of farmers and fishermen who invite me to their house for dinner, want to give me tea or alcohol and are very pleased to meet me out in the middle of nowhere.
    Five or six years ago when I was fairly new in China (and couldn’t speak much Chinese) I went for a cycle out in the sticks, miles from anywhere. I punctured a tyre and for whatever reason didn’t have my kit on me. I was stranded and had to walk a few hours back to the nearest village. Went into the only local shop I could find to ask for a puncture repair kit and instead the shopkeeper phoned a few friends who all came round and decided they were going to fix my bike for me. Salt of the earth.
    I don’t think in England if a foreigner turned up out the blue in a rural setting hardly being able to speak the language, they would be met with anywhere near as much kindness.

    • @Beetrecca

      @Nachtdwaler Před 4 lety +24

      @@Beetrecca You have to remember that a foreigner in England is a lot less rare of a sight than a foreigner in a Chinese rural area.
      I'm from the Netherlands, and I feel that my country also has a lack of kindness of this particular type.
      That being said, if you would be in a rural area, miles from anywhere, with a punctured tire, as a foreigner, I think people would definetely help you get your stuff fixed.
      It might take a little more persuasion as people in western countries are in general a bit more kept to themselves.
      Kind souls exist everywhere!

      @suburbia2050 Před 4 lety +8

      Oh god the sanctimonious twaddle of the expat. There is no such thing as the "rural" in the UK, hasnt been for the last century nearly, been away that long? You dont need informal supply chain ("social") networks to survive, you just need cash. Plenty of people help each other but individuals dont have impromptu personal networks to call upon as its is all commoditised. I am sure these villagers wouldn't have handed you precious money instead. The UK is always in the top 10 of those most charitiable country per head rankings you see now and then. A recent GoFundMe one put it in the op 5 with Ireland at the top along with US, Cananda and Australia. The British Isles and the Anglosphere taking the entire top 5. Not sure where China was.

      @Aledharris Před 4 lety +2

      suburbia1950 Haha, I wasn’t saying anything about how charitable the country is as a whole.
      I literally just said I was riding round in the wilderness in China and broke my bike and some nice people in a small village fixed it for me and were really kind. I don’t think it would happen in a small town in the same way in the Uk.
      When I say “rural” in china, I don’t mean mud huts either. They have jobs and need money in exactly the same way we do back home.
      Sorry I rattled your feathers by saying that the folk here have been nice to me in ways that I wouldn’t expect at home.
      Just look at the video we’re commenting on. Do you think if a man rocked up in a factory back home after wandering down a deserted road, they’d give him food and board like they did here?

Also State has less then 1 million in about the size of Germany.

    Very smart to compartmentalize your water. If it was all in one container, and the container failed you would lose all your water.

    Every time I see those vids I am asking myself a question of how much time it took you to record your driving. I mean you were alone there right? So you were placing camera somewhere, then driving, then coming back for the camera. That's a huge thing when u don't have much time, woah.

      They’re not that bad. No hand discomfort, easier on the back, lighter weight, more reliable and arguably more mechanically efficient when at an ideal cadence. I used to ride them several miles at a time as a teen. I wouldn’t choose one for a long trip, but for distances of 10 miles or less they’re reasonably practical.

    Hey, I know Kulsary! On the map there to the southwest you can see a thing marked Rotational Village. I spent nearly 3 years there working 3 weeks on, followed by 4 weeks off back at home - hence "rotational". That land is really flat, barren and featureless. It's roasting hot in the summer and dangerously cold in the winter. Knowing how hostile that environment is I'm super-impressed at Ed's achievement unicycling through it.
