I Spent 1,200 Days Unicycling Around the World... and I don't know why

  • My name’s Ed Pratt and from March 2015 to July 2018 I pedalled a unicycle 22,000miles around the world. Over that time I crossed 4 continents and performed over 12 million pedal rotations on my 40kg, 36’’ touring unicycle.
    - The film's synopsis -
‘The Curiosity of Edward Pratt’ is a character study. It poses the question: "What drives Edward Pratt?". Like many adventurers, Ed has a yearning to circumnavigate the globe but - unlike anyone else - he did it on a unicycle. This short documentary attempts to frame why.
    - Why am I releasing this film now -
Back in 2019 I spent a few days with Thomas Sandler shooting a short film about my 22,000 mile world unicycle tour. Originally meeting in the ‘Funky Monkey’ hostel in Vientiane, Laos, he contacted me two years later, explaining that he’d like to produce a short documentary on my ride for his university project. This documentary would later be dubbed ‘The Curiosity of Edward Pratt’.
Since the film’s completion in 2020 it was clear that ‘The Curiosity of Edward Pratt’ had much more potential than to be viewed once by a couple of dusty examiners in an equally dusty back room at York University, so Tommy took the doc and entered it into many film festivals across the country and around the world - quite fitting really!
During its run, it screened at over 35 festivals including the Academy Award qualifying ‘Leuven International Short Film Festival’ and the 40th ‘Kendal Mountain Film Festival’. It was nominated for national level awards and it won two ‘Yorkshire Royal Television Society Student Awards’. Pretty damn good going I’d say!
Over the last couple of years Tommy's been holding off releasing the film online, because this would've affected its eligibility of being entered into certain festivals. But now, with the festival run over, ‘The Curiosity of Edward Pratt’ can finally be released to the world, and Tommy has been kind enough to let me be the one to do so! So sit back, relax and experience my unicycle ride in a way you’ve never seen it before!

Indeed, I wonder how many hours of his whole trip he spent in placing cameras, running back and forth for getting it, flying the drone and so on. I have a slight suspicion, because I did the same for a short lived vlog channel, he definately put some serious effort into it. If not for us, he'll love that he captured this insane trip for himself to view over his entire life. this is highly special.

    Hey Ed,
It's super nice to watch your video as usual. You have a real talent to tell story. And your adventure had a such a good impact on this world. One of the impact you don't talk much in this video, is how many people did you inspire to leave their own adventure. I see few comment of other people who start unicycling because of you. For me, your adventure was the "click" When I realize, "I can just do it". 6 months after I found out your channel, I was starting my first ride around my country, Vlogging the all adventure. And now, I am planning a trip across Europe for the next summer. Nothing of this would have happen without you. Thank you.

It's really inspiring to watch these videos and also saddening to know that I'm just sitting here missing out on so much adventures. That's social media for you though I guess, you can't in one life time do everything you see all the amazing people, like yourself, do on here.
I'm glad someone is out there doing these things though and showing me parts of the world I'll never see myself. And I can still enjoy smaller trips and parts of the world and sherish those. We only have so much time on this planet, that's what makes it worthwhile. It all ends at some point, so get going.

What's the Purpose of Life? You have found the answer whether you know it or not. By the way. Last summer I was hiking in Wilson pass just outside Teton Nat park. On a steep narrow mtn trail, I see an Amish family of 6 riding up on unicycles. Lovely family, when you come up in the conversation the father tells me he picked you up in his big sixteen-wheeler when you were crossing the states. I think he picked you up in AZ. It might be of viewer interest to to:
    - understand the topology of failures sequenced chronologically and how they were resolved
    - did mechanical and parts failures fixable or did they need replacing?
    - would you choose did metal alloys in the future? (Front post and hub) did the metal hub fail?
    - How long to get the new wheel?
    - how did you charge your batteries? How much time? Did the cameras fail?
    - did you use cell phone maps?
    - how much time and effort did you take to setup your own scenes and then return to get your gear?
    - would you use different camera gear?
    -
There is probably a lot of interest in the technical and mechanical aspects of your encounters that viewers would like to index into via the Playlist section of YT.

I know why, we know why.. You're an exceptional man and your body and mind knew you had to complete an exceptional feat, thus, you unicycled around the world. That's why you said it "scratched an itch, for a time". Your body and mind knows you've got more in you to do!!

I watched the entire journey and loved 💖 every bit of it. I never wondered why Ed chose to do this. What difference does it make? He took us all along and showed us that we can do it too 🌍. Just keep pedaling. 👍☮️🌞🌟🚴‍♂️🌲🏕💚

Good for you and you’re at the age you can do something like this - I set a world record for the longest soccer game when I was 17 and in high school and I could not have done that later. Best wishes for new goals

I had a dream like this as a teen to ride a BMX across the US but when I did some small scale tests (riding 100 miles) I went through so many tubes and tires that I didn't think I could afford it at that time.... Now that I'm older and I'm still in good health, I feel like I can still do it but I Highly doubt I'd get as much recognition as Ed did.
