Is this pedal the Eddie Van Halen's sound in a box? He's known for having a great guitar sound, and for being a brilliant guitar player. If getting his sound is as simple as buying this guitar pedal, then that would seem like a no brainer. And even if you don't get his sound, you might get a good sound from the pedal. I try out the 5150 with two guitars, one with stacked humbuckers and one with regular humbuckers. That's because I got the feeling that the MXR might work better with regular humbuckers. But hey, I might be wrong.
Anyway, check out the video to see how this pedal ranks in the pantheon of overdrives. It's got Van Halen's name on it, so it should be fairly good. Enjoy!

I have this device and it is great but I noticed it's very delicate. Once I put a cell phoce on the input cord (just on top of it by mistake) and from then on it would not work. It was working fine just before. Another ocasion I plug my headphones to the amp so as to not make noice and then it stopped working. Another time I placed it right on top of the amp and it stopped working. And yet another time I just used the boots button and it stopped working. In all of these ocasion when I say not working I mean that there is no sound coming out of my amp. I umplug it and my amp is working fine. I just turn everything off and reconnect the EVH overdive and it works again but it is annoying that with any change it stops working. Anyone else experience the same?

You should contact the store you bought it from, or MXR. Mine is built rock solid, probably just a loose connection or faulty part, or maybe the Jack's need to be cleaned. Check the input jack. The pedal won't turn on if there isn't something plugged into it, maybe check there.
By far the best pedal on the market and super simple, just get it don’t hesitate it’s absolutely outstanding and nuff said

Just got a used one from L&M cause playing again after 20 years & need budget distortion. Running it through old bass amp. I was absolutely blown away. Put a HH setup in old mexi standard strat, bought this peddle used, & re-purpose the old 50w bass amp and got a decent metal setup to get back in the game cheap. I’ve not had much equipment but this pedal does everything from light OD to full crazy gain distortion. Very impressed by this pedal.
I love this pedal 🔥 I plug it into my fender blues jr in front of an xotic clean boost and it’s really great and surprisingly versatile - I’ve had all sorts of high gain pedals including some of the expensive bogners and diezel ones (which were also great but not what I was after) and I’ve settled on this bad boy for now.
Thanks Elmo! Cool last name so shine your light… not unpronounceable! So, I just unboxed a 5150 from Sweetwater and about to mount on my board. Thanks for the demo you have great chops. It was illuminating. I have a JVM and I find the high gain channel a bit too fuzzy, even reducing gain and trying different 12ax7s. So, wanted to use the clean channel with pedals. I’m planning to stack a few. This 5150 and a RAT for a fuzz option. But, a Strat clean through a Marshall is a beautiful thing too. Best regards from Fort Worth Tx. Pedal was $199 pre tax.

Agreed 💯. There is not a bigger EVH fan than me but in my opinion the yngwie pedal sounds better to my ears. It's smoother. 5150 sounds really good but not Eddie's tone and more importantly people need to realize you have to be Eddie to sound like him. Just my opinion. I have owned three 5150 amps . I went back to Marshall a few months ago. But I do have to try this pedal. The yngwie one. 🤘🤘
Great review! Most reviewers test this pedal on the front of a very clean amp and get good results sounding like EVH. My Marshall DSL20 don’t like this pedal at all on the clean channel, too fizzy. I use it to add color to the Ultra Gain channel (EVH Wolfgang guitar) and it helps to approach Van Halen sound, but thing Van Hagar Peavey 5150, not the original brown sound.

Most of the reviews the guys are getting good tones of this pedal just like Elmo, the amp is not entirely clean. It seems the pedal needs some dirt after it to get good EVH tones. I have one and that’s my experience as well.

Hello from Australia, I liked your review and the pedal does have a lot of gain but it doesn't just do metal. It's a versatile pedal that on lower gain levels can do a hot Marshall sound to a scooped high gain metal pedal and the gate is very handy too. Just like your Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive pedal that u are familiar with I'm sure that if u had this pedal for a while and became familiar with it that it to could b a pedal u would like, judging by your playing style. I have Eddie's stripes as my profile picture as a sign of respect. I'm not a big Eddie fan/wanna b, but when Eddie passed away the world lost another legendary guitarist. Sorry for rambling but yeah, good video 🤘

Why people think anything else is needed other than a Boss SD-1 amazes me.
This has a noise gate so that’s a bonus.
Yep, everytime a buy a drive pedal, i still think my $50 SD1 sounds best. You can have a $3000.00 amp, plug in a $50 SD1 and think, now it sounds better...
My guess on boost switch location; keep hand wiring short for less induced reactance/capacitance resulting in tone degradation? Great playing; wish you'd play some SRV ZZtop so us mortals could get more of a 'sense' of the sound.
Lo tuve y puedo decir que con una buena configuración le sacas un sonido brutal y estúpidamente bueno. Fácil obtienes algo muy cercano al Brown Sound.

This is a pretty good dirtbox, but I think there’s better options in this price range if you want this type of distortion. Luckily in the States they can be found used for $90-$110 much of the time.
That said, 15 year old me would’ve loved this pedal! 😆

I had one. Sent it back. Couldn’t get any kind of decent tone out of it with the single coil pickups in my Flying V2. Gotta get something with more gain like a Chug or a Ceres.
I got this from Sweetwater for $175 because I emailed them asking for a discount because I just bought a schecter C-7 silver mountain and a fender Stratocaster preformer. Plus they gave me a deal with the boss GT1

Out of all my pefals past and present, my fender yjm od with single coils, is the best. Especially in front of a plexi type channel with slight breakup. Cant be beat imo.

Quite a few of these available on Reverb.com for $180. Interesting though, as I make more friends in the YT community that many of the ‘on-line’ resources I enjoy in the US aren’t available elsewhere!?!? Weird. Definitely a humbucker type pedal imo.
Some are, but you have to pay import charges when buying from the US, and that can raise the price by quite a bit.
Dang what a nice pedal! Elmo would you buy this one for the mxr super badass distortion pedal? The super badass is only $100 and it's really versatile it can do anything from country to heavy metal and it sounds great like the evh5150.

I think your Strat sounds better with YJM Overdrive. I use the EVH amp 100 watt with matching cab and I don't feel that the EVH Overdrive pedal doesn't come close to EVH the amp. I use the original TS-9 Ibanez in front of the EVH... It makes the articulation a bit better.
I'm new to pedals, can I hook this up with a 9 volt power supply or does it have to run only on the batterys?

Oddly I think the strat made that pedal sound useful. Otherwise, not something pleasant. Great demo Elmo.

I've got the EVH OD. Really dislike the way bass rolls up with the gain and can make the bottom end flubby. That's with an open back non-tube amp though. Sounds better through my evh 5150 el34 with matching closed back 2x12. However I'd just prefer using the 5150.
The Wampler pinnacle deluxe v2 has better low end compression.settings and clickable boost. No gate, but who doesn't have a gate.

An Ibanez is not a good guitar for that pedal. The Strat sounded great.

Unfortunately, that pedal costs half the price of an EVH 5150 III 15W LBXII amplifier. To me that's too expensive!
The EVH 5150 III LBX is a very good amp.
Incorrect. LBX 2 is 700 bucks. This pedal is 200 and has a noise gate.
I've wondered the same thing about that boost button a million times- why in God's name would you not make that a second foot switch? If not right out of the gate you would think they would've done so on later versions but nope- stays the way it is, for all these years- it's stupid. Makes the boost circuit completely useless in a live situation- well, maybe not "completely"- you can reach over and turn it on but- it's a pain in the a$$. Still- from what I understand if you want a high gain pedal- this is the one to get. This or the Freidman BE OD.
