      A lot of people seem to think it's awful...not sure why. This'll replace my rat pedal for my heavy metal gigs.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 3 lety +2

      I think people expect it to sound like the full blown amp.. which in many ways it does. But its really all in how you use it.
      Just like you mentioned, it works best when you add it to a rig that otherwise didnt have that heavy gain sound.
      I still sort of wish they didnt name it an “Overdrive” because its a bit misleading.. its a distortion pedal.
      Thanks for the comment! Enjoy!

    I own one of these pedals and an EVH 5150iiis EL34 100 Watt head. While MXR claims this pedal is supposed to be the blue channel, i would say its actually a bit closer to the red channel of the amp. Key word being "closer". If you have an EL34 amp, this pedal can turn your rig into a very near clone of an EVH 5150. I'm sure it would do the same for any tube amp but i can only speak for my EL34. I also do highly recommend this pedal but i do also highly recommend the actual amp.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      I haven’t had the chance to rock the EL34 models. I considered it when I purchased my last 50 watt but opted for something I was already used. But i have heard great things about those models and I l’m definitely pick one up eventually. Thanks for sharing what you’re Rockin dude! Stay healthy and safe! \m/

    • @smeemusic
      @smeemusic Před 26 dny

      @@bretttrommler756 I don’t see why not. I would try using the fx loop first. So your signal would be guitar>5150>fx loop return. I’m not sure if the mxr 5150 is classified as a “preamp” pedal or not. But yes this pedal would rock in a jcm800. Also that’s a cool amp you got bro! Is that a 2205 model?

    @bikersoncall Před 3 lety +2

    I tried the Freidman also, but decided
    on this pedal , they were very similar,
    I think I would be happy with either,
    this 5150 just seemed to have a slight
    edge tone wise, it's also a bit smaller
    which is good for my board. I do
    find though that having two channels
    can be useful, which the Freidman has.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      A 2 channel EVH pedal would be RAD!
      Technically the pedal has two "Voicing" when the "Boost" is engaged or not but that feature is not switchable with a foot switch and would be A LOT Cooler if it was!
      🤘🏼😜

    • @bikersoncall
      @bikersoncall Před 3 lety +1

      @@MadManMusic The boost feature
      (evh) is supposed to add a bit of
      compression, so that's cool, but I
      do have a Slide Rig MK2, that is
      a very good addition to the board,
      pretty essential to me. The problem
      with that little boost knob for me
      is that that is not nearly enough
      range between clean 'drive' and
      distortion. Eg; SRV= CLEAN BOOST,
      on the EVH, 7 O'clock (Gain)
      , most everything
      else Classic Rock dirt would be
      about 11 to 12 O'clock (Gain).
      I was only doing Allman Bros ,
      SRV types of blues when I got
      this EVH, now I'm back to everything
      Classic Rock , so I actually ordered
      the Freidman again, lol, cause I can't
      see bending down to the ground
      constantly to move the 'Gain' around,
      then you have to also mess with the
      'Output' knob often as welll, when
      doing so. Also in the middle of a
      song, like SRV , the clean gain isn't
      enough when going into a solo.
      I had actually thought about running
      two of the EVH's to solve this issue,
      but we'll see.. :shrugs: ....

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      Thats true, if its going to the PA. But if you want a cab on stage (which i would prefer) you need to run the pedal into a power amp of sorts and then into a cab.. or both (splitting it to an IR).
      The combinations are pretty varied!

    dude... I FULLY agree with your intro! My drummer and I are gearing up for a new Cover Band (Im sure after Nov 4th the world will be open again :P ) I really dont wanna lug amps around anymore. ESPECIALLY 4x12s... and I dont want a wimpy lil Combo.... So Ive been lookin at all these DI possibilities like the HX Stomp but many of those are WAYYY more than what I need... SO... Im thinkin of the EVH OD through a cab sim... and into the board. (maybe like Cabzeus or Friedman?) Your vid shows some great tones! Very appreciated.

      jay spray Thanks for the Compliment! I appreciate it! Glad the info was Helpful!
      I have a Line 6 HX Effects that I use with my 50 watt EVH 5153 and I use an Aux Send Output to send a Cab IR signal to a DI Box thats Under my Pedal Board for the same roundabout reason. And it works Amazingly. Now i still play through a Cab when i use this rig, I just cant get away from a real amp but just not having a Mic to Kick or Knock over is such a Luxury for me. The HX FX would be overkill as a “Cab Sim” but maybe I’ll do another Vid using Just that Feature with the 5150 Overdrive and see how it works!
      There is also a new Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 Amp that you can use as a very small power amp (obviously) to just a Cab BUT it also now includes DI Capabilities. I’m trying to get my hands on one to also match that up with the 5150 Overdrive!

      @MadManMusic  Před 2 lety +1

      Awesome! Welcome!
      If you’re playing Rock or Metal a Noise Gate is Necessary to Clean Up your signal. Otherwise you’ll have Feedback running rampant. But if you’re playing clean or with moderate amounts of overdrive, you don’t necessarily need a gate.
      I always recommend a gate Clear or Overdriven because it just cuts out all the unnecessary sound and noise from your playing giving you a much more polished sound.
      I dont recommend selling it, put it first in your signal chain (So Guitar->Tuner-> Noise Gate->Amp), set the Decay (if it allows you to adjust it) at Minimum or slightly above, set the Threshold where it sounds natural without choking out your signal too quickly and thats it!
      Try it like this and let me know how it works for you!

    Tuner, 5150 OD, MXR 10 band, Crate Power Block, or Marshall Origin 50’s FX return. ISO cab with Emminence EM-12,(EV style), or a Stereo Crate cab, the Cannibal Corpse cab,(Emminence and Celestion blend). That is how it runs best with my stuff. I have to say, the Zoom 510 Dual Power Driver is a sleeper capable of some extreme brutality, for 30-60$ you can’t afford to pass one by. Another is the Boss OD-20, the HM-2 mode is worth the money and it really changes the sound when you turn the knobs unlike the original. Assuming because it’s EVH, could it give me a similar tone to a peavey 6505 mh? I have a peavey stack and trying to find a light weight alternative with a Blackstar 1x12.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před rokem

      Well it doesn't have Speaker Emulation or a Power Amp so it really won't save you from needed those things... The MH would be the better option.
      Unless the Blackstar is an actual Amp. Then I would say using this pedal into the Effects Loop (if it has one) would be a viable option...
      But in that case I'd suggest something that would get you more options like the new Hotone Ampero Mini.

      @@MadManMusic I have a peavey 6505 mh with a 2x12 cab. Really happy with it, so much so that I want to find a light weight alternative that’s easier to carry around. I have a Blackstar debut 50r which is a 1x12 combo amp and want to utilize a pedal to get me to a close peavey 6505/5150 tone. Could the EVH pull this off?

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před rokem

      It could, sure. Like I mentioned, if your Blackstar has an FX Loop, the EVH would work well there. Just bypass the Blackstar’s Preamp all together.
      🤘🏼😜

    • @jonathanpanetta
      @jonathanpanetta Před rokem +1

      @@MadManMusic do you mean effects loop to the output of the EVH pedal, and the input of the EVH pedal into the guitar’s audio Jack?

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před rokem +1

      Yes. If you have other pedals you’ll want to have them in the correct positions either before or after the EVH. Like a Wah would be before and a Reverb and/or Delay after it.
      You basically just using the Blackstars Power Amp and bypassing it’s Preamp.
      If you use this pedal before the amps Preamp (going from the EVH to the Blackstars regular Input) the Preamp will drastically change the tone of the EVH.
      The same will happen whenever you put an EQ behind an Overdrive or Distortion.
      So the cleanest signal would be Guitar ➡️ EVH ➡️ FX Loop “Return” on the Blackstar.
      I hope thats making sense. Let me know if still have questions. I’m happy to help!

    Yo! What are your thoughts on the 6505plus crunch channel vs the 5150s blue channel? They sound the same?

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Dee Miller Hey Thanks for the Question!
      I dont think there is a whole lot that is the same between these two amps. In my opinion the EVH far exceeds the tonal quality and usefulness of any of the Peavey variants.
      But I do believe you can make them sound similar.
      The EVH (across both the Blue and Red Channels) tends to have a warmer and smoother sound. Whereas the 5150’s and 6505’s from Peavey Tend to be a bit more “Shrilly” to me. Lots of Unpleasant High End and Presence and little to no Useable midrange. Which I guess was the point at the time. Achieving the “Scooped” sound with tons of Gain. Which it does very well.
      But I guess the short answer is, I feel like the EVH overall has a more pleasant sound and is a more “Musical” amp.
      So if that’s what you’re going for, EVH All Day!
      🤘🏼😊

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Dee Miller Well the EVH 5150 III LBX is what I’m using in this video along side the MXR EVH Overdrive.
      The LBX sounds Awesome and can easily push a 4x12.
      Id say if you plan on upgrading to a larger Speaker Cab Configuration go with the LBX.
      But if you’re planning on just jamming at home the Combo is nice and easy.

      Dalton Clements Depends on Where you’re Playing and What Sort of PA and Monitor System they have.
      If the venue has powerful enough Floor Monitors, then a Combo would be fine.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Před 3 lety

      I have only tried the Precision Drive from the Horizon Devices... Devices. And truthfully I wasn't really impressed with it. However I would love to get my hands on one again and make a comparison now.
      However if the 5150 Overdrive had the ability to load whatever Cab IR you want onto it with an XLR out I think it would work really well as something to "get you through" a light out gig or something of the sort. Because whats the difference if the IR is just on another pedal... Thats another pedal to power, another cable in the chain, etc etc.
      If the IR is something "Pre-Loaded" from the manufacturer I can definitely agree that the result could be hit or miss. Like certain SansAmp pedals and maybe this Apex Pre (but not sure). But if you could load your own IR's... well... than it'd just be your own dang fault if it sounds bad! lol
      Thanks for the comment! I'll check out this Apex pedal to determine the True Suckiness of it!

      @@fedboy21 It could/would be cool for sure. In theory. If it was customizable in some way to give the user their own flexibility. But again, in my opinion, it wouldn’t replace a real amp (or comparable modeler). It’d just be cool for the one off gig that you had to travel super light for.
