Today let's see if the 5150 pedal is worth buying or not. This pedal was made by MXR in collaboration with Eddie Van Halen. It's labeled as an overdrive but this pedal is anything but, this is a full on distortion pedal! Not only that, but it's pretty much a grand master distortion pedal, giving you everything you possibly could need with the addition of a noise gate and a boost for chugging and shredding. Is the 5150 pedal worth buying? You bet! This is one of the best distortion pedals I've played all year.

In Canada here, equipment real expensive bought this pedal used from Long & McQuade to get good distortion quick before amp shopping. Have Strat modded VERY similar to Dustin, twin 81’s, old mexi strat, using old bass amp, amp shopping this summer / new guitar maybe xmas….this is a great distortion peddle. I just love it. I got playing metal again for little money…already had the strat & in good shape (maybe need fret dress next year & new nut…24yr old guitar but great shape)…spent $600 to mod guitar & get peddle…that’s pretty good in Canada…that’d be guitar cost alone up here. Investment….have tons spare parts for S-shapes or single coil now.
Looking at full 5150 40w combo, Iconic, used or demo later this summer. It’s more full-distortion than OD. TONS of gain. Haven’t played metal in 24 years, maybe better stuff out there but swear this pedal is just great. Can use my EMG 81 loaded pickguard on any S-shapes so can always put strat back to H-S-S. So many great new guitar brands than 2000’s. I really love this pedal and I play every day now.
I think the 6505+ sounds amazing at low volumes. It sounds incredible through the oversized mesa rectifier cab.
I'll have to try it out again it's been a long time since I played one. Oversized Mesa cabs rock!

My Marshall DSL 40C hooked to my EVH 2x12 is badass with no pedals, but when I step on my 5150 pedal, eargasm!

I have that pedal and the moment you stomped on it I knew instantly it was the 5150 Overdrive. This thing (like most pedals but more so with this one) screams with a fresh 9volt. The gain will melt faces.

I have also worked with a lot of pedal combination's, but i find the ISP should be in front, as the guitar 60 hum and noise with make it worse threw distortion pedals then after just a hint to try !
just tried mine for the 1st time last nite,,ito a peavey vk112,into a 2x12 bugera cab,,with 2 v30's,,clean channel,,could barelt turn amp up past 2,,,super nasty pedal,,worth 200 all day,,love it
My favorite OD pedal. ever. Sounds like a high-gain tube amp pushed to the breaking point.
perhaps less talking and more playing ?
My only problem with this pedal is the tiny boost switch. Should have been a second foot switch

Not sure about this guy but play it through the loop fx at the back of the amp. It's a pre amp pedal after all.
@@David-yp9ou na I got the revv purple. my buddy had both and said the revv is better. I trust him kuz he has like 30 guitars and 10 heads and 8 cabs etc... he has tried everything. its fun being rich.

Did you put this pedal in the fx loop?
I kind of remember doing it before but I think it sounds better through the front of the amp. I think that's what this pedal was ultimately designed for, you might have a different experience.

I wish I could tell you, I haven't played the Mooer 005 yet but it does sound amazing. I can tell you though that the 5150 pedal is worth the money though.

Gojira uses the evh amps so I'd imagine this can do it.
2 minutes plus in and the guitar is simply a silent prop.

I can see why you'd like that configuration.
I bought one and run it with the two notes torpedo cabm+ without the clean preamp on, and with the 6L6 power tube section on....sound killer.
I have a EVH LBX and also ran it in the fx loop to compare it to the blue channel...it's pretty much the blue preamp channel of the 5150...
Running a preamp/distortion pedal like the mxr 5150 into the front of a clean preamp of a tube head didn't make sense to me.
Running two preamps at the same time? But everyone does it different according to their setup.
@@pvampman Interesting ? I got the orange super crush and that is really good to run from the front in the clean channel ,then you really hear the detail of pedals. I think the problem is when you run pedals into the front there going into all the other stuff so its hard to make it sound good ! i bought the torpedo as well and use it for my evh lbx as well, due to the high volume it has a 0 LOL ! But the super crush in the dirty channel is great but its quite harsh but when i used the two notes i used the 20db reducer and could turn it up and then someone happened that blew my mind it sounded better and have no idea why ? its not harsh anymore i tried to tell people online about this but i don't think anyone has tried this yet but its amazing sound now and have no idea why ?
@@pvampman One more thing, I'm going to make new video's of pedal's i put together, and made sound awesome, i used the 5150 pedal with black star distortion pedal with the tube in it, wow sounds awesome don't even need a good amp or just a clean one like the super crush !
