  • The other day, my new EVH 5150 Overdrive pedal arrived and after running it through my Mooer 20W Tube Engine as a preamp, I realized it was awful! Today, it was the opposite! Thanks to everyone who shared their settings with me!

    This is one of the best pedals I have. I run through my fender Princeton clean channel with the treble on 1. It takes some configuring to get that sweet spot but once you do it’s a great and furious pedal. I get good midrange tone out of it as well.

      @Jamie Best I’ve got it for my dark terror, it doesn’t work amazing with that amp due to it already being pretty gritty, but if you get a good clean tone first (no clean channel so takes some dialling in on the amp) then it sounds great, I’m sure it’ll work mint with the Marshall

Gotta run it into a clean channel, however I find that one can obtain a very similar sound if not a better overdrive running straight out of a tube amp, such as my nasty Peavey 6505+ (forerunner to the 5150) and the guitar I use is a 2021 EVH Wolfgang Special (unmodified)😮 Further, if I'm using my 5150 OD pedal, I prefer to run it into the front, not a rear FX loop. ✔️ I almost feel like this pedal worked better with a solid state, such as my old Orange Crush 60, I've noticed differences using it between SS and tube amps.

    Really? Ok good I bought it for my distortion pedal because I just bought a Mesa boogie and I dislike the distortion channels it has too much of a bee sound. I’m only going to use this for distortion instead of a pre-amp. I really want that brown sound distortion.

    • @louistorres
      @louistorres  Před 3 lety

      This thing is great through a clean channel! With the Mesa, you have to dial back the gain stage then use an overdrive to tighten the tone. That's the sort of "fix" that the Mesa Rectos need. Hope that helps, brother!

      @@louistorres ok cool, I’m ordering the behringer the heavy metal pedal. What is your thoughts on the behringer pedals? Thanks that does help because the distortion on the triple is a little much. I bought the Mesa triple for $500 and I had to change the tubes so all in all I paid $1000 for the head.

      That’s funny because mine has so much treble I have to dial it back.... I’ve owned a block letter, a II, I currently own a 6505MH, and I’ve played almost every iteration of iii so I’m prett familiar with the tone. I love my pedal but I run it at almost the lowest gain into the crunch channel of the 6505MH. Wails for me. Anything but “dark” though...

    I should’ve watched the rest of the vid before I commented😂😂😂 yeah definitely run that through the front of the amp on a clean channel and it’ll getcha close to where ya need to be. I use fishmans and I never have to use another OD in front of the evh unless I’m using my LP Custom. Then it’s gotta be boosted a bit. Past that tho, I run Ltd sct-607B, evh, peavey solid state and that’s pretty much it. Cheers, duder!

  • @vinsaneinthemembrainnnn

    Sorry you didnt like it dude! I was using it to boost a 2x12 solid state Peavey Vypyr combo amp before I could get a solid tube amp. I use to run it with a clean boost on the clean channel. Couldnt ever get a good tone out of it any other way. Once I got the Stealth I had no use for it. Definitely agree it's more or less a less intense distortion pedal if anything.

    Agreed man i dont through it into the effects loop either i use it on my peavey 5150 right into the high gain channel haha it kills. I dont max the treble out cause it sounds too choppy imo id go to 7 or 6-7. Or a little over halfway sounds fine but depends on your amp. The boss ge-7 eq can clean it up as well. I turn the output to like 8 and the gain on the pedal to 4. Even at 4 is plenty of gain for a 5150

    Hey Louis! Need your recommendation, looking for a head, I can possibly get mesa dual rectifier, but I don't want mess with tubes, and this one will need replacement, I would prefer finding solid state. I know you have Randall RG models. I played mesa before I liked a lot haven't played Randall tho. What's your opinion? Playing hardcore and metal

    • @louistorres
      @louistorres  Před 3 lety +1

      They are totally different sounds between the Rectifier and the Randall RG line. A much better recommendation would be for you to listen to at least ten videos with each and hear which one is closest to the tone you like. Mesa Rectifiers are a self bias unit, so you pop in power and preamp tubes and that's it. There's that additional cost for tubes but just post in a grew groups that you need tubes and if anyone has any spares, everyone usually does! :)

  • @ericfranco6336
    @ericfranco6336 Před 2 lety

    Anyone who thinks the "pedal" is a blue channel of a 5150 needs to stop smoking the cheap stuff! I run my EVH 5150 Overdrive like a hot-rodded Tube Screamer with my 100 watt Marshall DSL 100. I tun the gain waaaaaay low, up the output, and it compliments the dirty Marshall tone quite nicely. So, unlike a real TS, I can take advantage of the EVH's EQ, Gate, and Boost features. So, I love the pedal, but you also have to know how to play the amp, too! Thanks for the video -- nice to see videos that aren't made just for a bunch of "fanboys!" :D

    “EVH 5150 Overdrive” is the name of the type of distortion.
    You could try & use it as an overdrive, but your results may vary & you might be disappointed.
