I swear. There's no way a club's value increases if it goes trophy less for 10 years, or maybe an FA cup or two. The young players' value goes down as no one rates them anymore. No one buys their merch and the next generation starts following other clubs. It's as simple as that. Granted business has become bigger in football but it's still sport at the heart of it. Rory just heard this conspiracy theory somewhere and now can't stop blabbering about it.

It is stupid as shit. He’s comparing an asset to a liability. The price of a property is more likely to go up than go down. A player loses value as they age and run their contracts down. Especially bound to go for lesser if they dont light it up either and the club looks to offload them.

I think the issue with trying to sell Gallagher isn't just about pure footballing concerns. Like absolutely Chelsea could sign a better player than him, they've tried numerous times with their current midfield. But this constant off heaving of academy players in favour of young player, with little to no experience basically signed fresh out of other teams academies makes it much, much harder for the fans to buy into a project.
I know it's used a lot, but you look at the Arsenal project and a big reason that Arsenal fans were willing to give the team more time was because they had two local boys in Smith Rowe and Saka starting in the side, it's much easier to form an attachment with a player that has come through your own club and that you know despite things not looking great that they genuinely care about the club and want to turn things around.
It's still mental to me though that of all clubs they thought Chelsea would be a good one to buy for a moneyball-esque longer term project. A huge portion of Chelsea fans began supporting the club after they were successful and that group of fans are not willing to give a manager or player time, they expect immediate results.
Even if it was any other club having a long term project is pitiful if you don’t get results now

Rory if you don’t think Chelsea have improved under pochetino then I’m speechless. They have improved even if it is just marginally.
Players that have improved under pochetino: Gallagher, palmer, mudryk, Sterling and cucurella
Palmer was winning City the Super Cup. Everyone knew he was good and just needed regular game time. Mudryk is still crap and so is Cucurella. The only player that has significantly improved under Poch is Gallagher, Sterling too but he was played out of position last season and was still okay.

I get Rory's house price analogy, the problem is the market goes up with the assets. You sell that 1.8m House, and you still need 2.5m to replace it if you follow the Chelsea method of buying. The club and player value won't increase if there isn't success. Chelsea are a massive club and historically important, but if the spend a decade finishing behind, Aston Villa, Newcastle etc, they lose value. What stops a new buyer looking at Man City vs Man Utd and buying Fulham to build them up, specially if Stamford Bridge can't be expanded. Would Fulham fans accept leaving the Cottage more if it comes with City levels of success

Depends how you look at it how the £926m was spent. It was wasted largely across Caicedo, Enzo, Cucurella, Fofana and Mudryk. That’s £420m itself. You then look at how they recouped fees by selling players (probably £300m worth). Due to the long term injuries of James Chilwell Fofana and Nkunku it does impact the teams performances

Thinking that purchases like Caicedo are purely for future profit is absolute mince.
They'd make more money buying cheaper youth now and giving them senior squad time and selling them on with the 'top team' rub of playing first team minutes for Chelsea.
I think Rory doesn't understand investment operations. They don't just spend all their money on one thing and cross their fingers for 10 years, it's constant % profits by buying and selling. They'll make more money on selling average players for a little chunk of profit over the next decade than the prospect of making like 40 mil on Caicedo down the line.
They make 50-60 million pure profit on selling academy guys like Tammy, Mount, Tomori, etc.
Consistent profit over smaller time is way more valuable than the chance of 50 million in 10 years.

Rory's house analogy doesn't work on making profit. Yes player prices increase as do house prices through inflation, but if you intend on replacing that assest. Aka moving out of one house and moving into another, you only make pure profit if you buy in a completely different market, or in other words buy a cheap house in a shit neighbourhood. You can't tell me Chelsea will buy caicedo for over £100,000,000 then sell him for £130,000,000 (because inflation), meaning you have to find a another player of premier quality for £30,000,000 In a further inflated market, just to break even on the whole caicedo transfer. That's before we look at his wage costs, and the general running costs of having caicedo at the club (kit fees, transport, accommodation etc etc). There's then also no way you can buy a player at such a cheap price when the whole market knows your track record of paying exorbitant fees.
These players have to improve as an asset in their own right, separate from general inflation. Chelsea know this and that's why they are selling their academy players. They can't sell their new signings AND replace them for profit. They have to be compliant with ffp, which means posting actual net profit, hence talk of Gallagher moving on, and the mount sale.
