  • On this week’s episode on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by former Wales captain and Premier League footballer turned coach Craig Bellamy.
Craig takes on Gary at the Cube in Manchester before a fascinating sit-down interview.
Having clocked up over 500 professional appearances and represented nine clubs over a career that spanned almost 20 years, Bellamy does not lack in stories to tell.
Find out how much of a big influence legendary boss Bobby Robson was at Newcastle United before an acrimonious fall-out with Graeme Souness led to a St James Park departure.
Hear the full anecdote on his infamous Golf attack at Liverpool and which other member of the squad was involved in a separate incident on the same night. Bellamy also reveals where he was told to look for another club under Rafa Benitez.
Craig reveals his own mental health battles from childhood through to career injuries and the impact of losing a close friend and former-team mate Gary Speed.
Finally, we talk about how the Cardiff-born man has ventured into coaching through his love of the tactical side of the game and how he won’t be changing his philosophy any time soon.

One of the best Interviews Gary has done.... Almost everything Craig said struck a chord with me - listening to him and understanding his inner hatred for himself made me really reflect. Almost like I know the solution for him, but I can't accept it for myself! Bellamy is such an engaging fella. His comment about being different and not belonging..... Jeez - I know that one! What a fascinating interview ...... I always liked Craig when many were often negative about him. It's about understanding the people around you and giving them the time and attention i.e the respect required in getting to understand them. Being misunderstood so often himself Graig has brilliantly used the resulting frustrations as a force for good. He has unselfishly turned personal negatives and potential negative outcomes into collective positives. It sounds simple because it is but in reality and in day to day practice it's a highly advanced way to behave and operate. Respect.

Livewire, engaging, honest, divisive and firey, love or hate Bellamy, I think this episode will be interesting. Good work getting these type of characters on, it's what makes the episodes so good to watch. 👍👏

Great interview. As a Norwich fan, I had the pleasure of watching CB "grow up" to a certain extent, and obviously become a decent player.
Iwan Roberts' autobiography mentions how he was nicknamed "Best in Club", because even if he had no talent in a different sport, he had to always get the best kit. Always with the bravado and swagger, clearly masking a lot of the issues he's had.
Still, a character and it seems now, a decent human being, aware of his failings, personal battles and appreciation of those around him.
Good on him and the best of luck!

He’s done well to own his mistakes and pinpoint improvements in his family life, eg, with his daughter. None of us are the finished article. We all have regrets. But we also have a future. Thanks for reminding us of that, Craig, don’t be too hard on yourself! ❤

What an amazing interview from someone whose behavior overshadowed his talent. I had written him off to be honest because he seemed extremely selfish and entitled in his playing days but to hear him now is almost like hearing a completely different person. He is taking responsibilities and choosing to be accountable. Fair play to you, Craig. Your story will be great for young professionals (in any discipline) coming up.

It was fascinating hearing a sportsperson talking about the struggles they face keeping their mental health in check in the hear and now.

Love these overlap series. Great insight into players, managers, and there lives. Very honest of Craig to open up and tell all. We all have two wolves inside us. One which is kind considerate and loving. Then the other one which is evil, deceitful and horrible. Which one survives depends on which one we feed.

    Great interview
To me, Craig Bellamy is one of the legends of the premier league
One thing about this interview, and hopefully you do it with interviews going forward, I feel you should have talked about his whole career
As a City fan, I was disappointed you didn't go into his time at City
He was incredible for us and I know I was devastated when he left
Skill, finishing, electric pace, hard work... he was everything City needed in a player...
He even did an interview back in the day, if I'm not mistaken, where he said he hoped he'd finish his career at City. Again, was gutted to see him leave my club.
Hopefully you do a part 2 like you joked about or just in general, ask players about their whole careers because this is great viewing and it would have been even better with the full career delved into.
    Cheers

Bellamy was a great player at NUFC but was right to move on at the time. I think you can see he has matured greatly and takes accountability for what he did wrong and also understands the favours he was done by people like Sir Bobby. Great to hear how much he has clearly grown up. Wish him well.
