The biggest mistake was letting SBR go, he should have been moved into a football director role at the club and selected his own replacement at the end of the season at the time.
The players were an absolute joke, including Bellamy, Bowyer, Dyer and co... the environment was so toxic, I’m glad SBR left, he didn’t deserve how it went for him at your club, at all.
Players such as Bellamy disrespected the man. It would only have harmed Robson unless they got rid of those players.
The board got Robson in and paid him a very low wage considering he was world class at the time. He took the job to save us and sort us out. He was there 5 years and very under funded. The signings he made were smart signings like Bellamy, Robert and jenas and looked for gaps in the market and players with potential that he could coach. He got us from bottom of the league to 3 top 5 finishes and got the best out of them players making the club huge amounts of profit and the players big wages. They all thought by the 5th season the old man’s done the graft now let’s start taking over. The board began making transfers without Robsons consent and selling players like Gary speed whom Robson wanted to keep. The board began getting involved with the running of the club after it was Robson who made them successful again. He had a bad start to the 2004-05 season but his record they had a bad start the previous seasons and still finished 3rd and 5th. They sacked him and replaced him Graeme Souness and give the plonks more money in the season and half he was there then Robson had over 5 seasons and he spent it on shite. He fell out with everyone and the club went into turmoil until now 20 odd years later. Sacking Robson was the biggest mistake and blunder in Newcastles history
Spot on . Couldn't of said it better myself. I had heard at the time before souness was employed that he had destroyed benfica . He spent so much money there he actually dragged them into the brink of no existence . Took them nearly 20yrs to get back to somewhat normal. So I feared the worst when he got the job . Then when he spent so much money alarm bells started ringing for me . I saw it coming a mile away . I thought we'd never recover . And I blame him and Freddy. We had Bobby . It was never going to get better after they sacked him . For me , Bobby was one of my heroes and we all wish he had stayed forever . Glad we are looking up now . But it's been a very long and hurtful journey but we came out better for all we suffered as a club . HWTL

Everyone forgets how poor the injury record and transfer record was under all managers but Keegan and Robson. Sourness was terrible, Gullet was terrible, Dogleash was terrible, and so on right up to the current ownership.

What this interview shows is that the media have a lot to answer for (as they do now). It seems the days of true journalism based on investigation of the facts have been dead for 20 years plus now. Craig Bellamy was a great player for NU. As someone else said, when he played we always looked like we’d win. Saying he had a bad attitude, is an opinion, not a fact. Listening to him owning up with respect to his personal relationship, shows a level of maturity.
I had the fortune to teach Lopetegui’s son, Daniel. In one tutorial, I asked him to comment on a theory of mine regarding footballers. The theory was that the management of their off-field lives was the key to success. This was based on my own senior industrial management style. He said his father, has always agreed with this and strived to help players because this is how you get the best out of them.
Bellamy was a young guy, at a club where everyone wanted to know everything about the players from what they eat for breakfast to the colour of their undies. Jermaine Jenas famously called Newcastle, a goldfish bowl. It takes someone with a strong personality, great mental fortitude and immense self-belief to be a professional footballer. This is 1,000 times more true at Newcastle United. I wish Bellamy was young now and available because Eddie Howe would get the best out of him since he has a holistic management approach too.

I started supporting Newcastle in 2002 when I was 11. Bellamy was my favorite player at the time.
Great memories of him at Newcastle. Him and Robert my fav players as a kid. His pace, desire and passion were next to none.
The interview I’ve been waiting for! As a Newcastle fan I already felt that there was a cloud over Craig’s departure. We loved him and thought he felt the same. Now I can understand why and respect why he left. Thanks for the memories. Oh and f@ck Souness.

Craig Bellamy was one of the best players I’ve seen live. A pressing forward who defences hated playing against. At his best he was one of the best players in the country no doubt about it.

Bellamy recently was declared bankrupt. He also started a football school in war torn Sierra Leone whereby the kids did'nt play unless they went to school there. i sincerely hope the school did'nt bankrupt him. He no doubt had issues akin to Joey barton with anger management , but as a player on his day he was a real force. Good luck Craig.

Bellamy was class for us and souness ripped Newcastle apart to try and prove a point he was the boss getting rid of sir Bobby was a major mistake, souness bought boumsong was bought from Ranger’s for 11mill which was a lot of money for that time and he’s was terrible and not to mention souness had shares in Rangers at the time.

As a Welsh Newcastle fan, Craig Bellamy belongs to a small group of players that I'm incredibly conflicted about. On the one hand, he was an amazing player that I loved to watch. On the other hand, he had one of the worst attitudes in the history of the game. If it wasn't for that attitude, he could've been one of the greatest ever players. He could've done for Cymru what Bale has done. Truly great players don't moan about the quality of others - they get out there & do it by themselves.
Hes only telling the truth when was the last time Newcastle won anything
Latest is Diriyah Cup 2022. We also won the Intertoto Cup in 2006.

I've sometimes wondered how Jonathan Woodgate would have faired under Souness? He would have been injured for most of Souness's time at the club (unless Newcastle got him fit quicker than Madrid historically did) but with his (Woodys) antics off the field with his little group of mates from Boro?.........
remember he coming out the training ground and they got told not to stop and go straight to sjp for a photo shoot every one drove past and bellas stoped to sign autographs wile big Al was behind him raging lol. He took about 5 mins with fans not letting any other player out. loved his attitude

Bellamy was a very good player for newcastle. Loved his competitiveness, the way he kept pissing off opponents and his quality. Really improved with us esp his goalscoring. Souness is a very detrimental appointment

I'm a Newcastle fan and every time Bellamy played.. I had hope. Bellamy terrorised defences. Bellamy was my 2nd best ever player behind Peter Beardsley. I remember Bellamy last min goal against feynoord away.. I ran in to the street jumping up and down I went berserk. I believe Robson was sacked because freddy shep knew Bobby was ill.

He was sacked as there was a belief at the time that Sir Bobby had lost control of the dressing room. Wrongly in my opinion, Dyer refused to play on the wing and there was definitely a split in the dressing room

Bit of a click-baity thumbnail picture for the video. He speaks fairly well about Newcastle and doesn’t say anything that most fans would disagree with. The only exception being the perpetuating of the media creative narrative of unrealistic fan expectations. That one grates a bit.
He was adored by fans, I had his name on my shirt two years running when I was a kid, it’s a shame how he conducted himself at the end. Whilst I don’t disagree with much of what he says here, there’s a reason he’s gone through more clubs than Tiger Woods. I remember watching this full episode and thinking “if the penny hasn’t dropped that there’s a common denominator by now, then it never will”.
The way he left us was a disgrace no player should ever refuse to play even if the manager was a tool. He was a great player for us perfect partner for shearer(who’s legs were gone) I loved his shithouse attitude. Massively underrated but still one of my favourite players. I remember those back to back away games around Christmas were we beat a very good Leeds side 3-4 & Arsenal 1-3 both away I thought we can win this. But for injuries we may well have - toon fan

One of the best PL players ever IMO. He had it all. So what if he had a bad attitude, most players do. I don't even support any of his former clubs but there is no denying how good this kid was.
Bellamy and NUFC was a perfect match, we made each other better. He was at his absolute best playing for us and he never reproduced that anywhere afterwards.

I had to laugh near the start when Craig talked about “I’d played there (St. James’)… I missed a few I should have scored”… ha ha how true. Newcastle v Coventry. He must have missed five absolute sitters’ that day and I as sat in the stands I thought what an absolute w*nker Bellamy was, ho couldn’t hit a barn door. How wrong I was.
When we signed him the next season I still thought similar and wondered what we doing getting him.
Craig proved us all wrong. His speed, energy, commitment to Newcastle were wonderful and I have nothing but good memories of his time.
And yeah, we all got excited that year. We were winning and playing the best football and everyone had eyes focussed. A real belief that we would win the league… and then Craig’s injury at Sunderland of all places. As always at NUFC the dream disappeared in a puff of smoke. Happy days still though.

Bellamy was a great player for Newcastle united and at his time their it was run by bad ownership and management and am not surprised players like him left. Didn't think I was going to injoy this interview but like they say the truth always hurts.

Our relationship with Bellamy is weird. We loved him, the support split (I'm not sure in what majority) when he fell out with Souness, and I get the impression he doesn't feel the love from us and is (maybe understandably) a bit bitter. But we did love him, massively so. We lost everything when SBR, Bellamy and Robert left, the two players that changed everything when they arrived.
Bellamy says some nice things about NUFC and the fans, like "it's a special football club". He'll then contradict himself and say things like, "our fans think we should be as big as Man U and Liverpool". Hard to work him out sometimes, can't argue he was a cracking player though.
Playing for us back then was hard , heard loads of ex players say playing for Newcastle was awful coz you could't go out and enjoy yaself with out fans being allover ya .

Good to see Craig has turned his recent situation around.
His NUFC story doesn’t tally with reality unfortunately. A great player for us, off the pitch him and a few others, were a nightmare.
He mentions that it was FS who wanted BR out but it was only because of the likes of him, Jenas, Bramble and Dyers behaviour, that it came about.
Which he even acknowledges later in the interview, as his previous wife had to put up with his behaviour.
If you look at his career history, he never spent more than a couple of years at each club he played for. You could argue some of his moves were to better clubs, probably on better terms but there is probably something in the rumour that he was not a team player and/or difficult to manage.
Do you think he would play in Eddie’s team as it’s clear there is no place for egos?
The fan base now is United even if this squad comes 10th next season I’ll still be proud and fully behind Eddie and Tindal

The mature Bellamy is obviously a lot better than the young one who played, even though he was a great player, especially when providing the legs for Shearer. It's a shame that his character seemed to let him down a lot, but it's also positive that he's honest about it and able to reflect on it now.
Very sad Sir Bobby was sacked we went from 5th to 14th under Souness and our performances were very poor Bellamy was a great player and Robert left to join Portsmouth who was amazing

He run riot down the left flank, pressing the ran*ers defence so far back they were on the goal line. He still found a way to curl the ball into the top corner. What a player he was for his relatively short time at Celtic. He could have made himself immortal to the fans if he took a reduced wage to keep playing. He could have ended his career at Celtic, and the Celtic family would have taken him in that wee bit more, to end up as a scout or backroom staff at Celtic..Such a shame he didnt stay.

Met Bellamy once. He struck me as a spiteful, cynical little man. His attitude whilst he was at Newcastle stunk, and I was one Toon fan that was glad to see the back of him.

It was a different world back then. The internet truly The Wild West. At least now we know you shouldn't believe 99% of what you read online. I disagree about the radio station though. I used to listen to three legends. I look at MMA and Boxing in 2023 where you have CZcams channels like "Behind The Gloves" who's job is to interview Eddie Hearn and the fighters, ask easy questions, don't challenge the answers, and just agree with everything. Even if Bellamy disagreed with the 3 legends, its still better that something like "So, Tyson, tell us all how great you are".
People forget a large group of the fanbase were calling for robsons head and werent upset when he went.

Had 4 Newcastle shirts with this guy’s name on, as well as a Wales shirt, an absolute game changer on his day and my favourite player during the SBR era. Lost all respect for him however when we saw him on the quayside one time and he told my lass to f*ck off, with his sidekick Dyer standing pissing himself laughing behind him. Unquestionably a class act on the pitch, but as a person based on personal experience - nah, sorry.

His attitude and laziness got in the way under sir Bobby not just fitness and injury. And under Graham, Craig had it coming. He was a pain. According to dyer and a few others, Craig did plan to or talk about faking injury. I kind of felt he’d done that before under Bobby. He wanted to be included in big games, and under Bobby with solano, dyer, shearer, Robert we were excellent (just not at the back) and Bellamy was so fast and agile. Players back off him. But he just couldn’t swallow his pride and sometimes I recall he didn’t run until late in the game.
He got into further depression when he hung up his boots and now works in Belgium I think. He wasn’t depressed under Bobby tho, far from. He thought a lot of himself. He had that hunger to be a top player but didn’t really bsck this up with his work. Not often enough and so clubs just kept moving him on or dropping him not just cause of injury. Would Craig have left if Bobby stayed and wasn’t sacked? Yeah I think so cause it was in his body language. He was a pain, a moaner and well.. once Graham had the chance that was that. Craig should have thought about the team bsck then instead of himself. But there again( that’s a modern day big head!)
Some of the rumours about his behaviour while at Newcastle are truly worrying. I fully believe in karma and he finds himself in the position he is currently in because at the heart of it he’s an absolute bellend.
