    The disrespect on Arsene Wenger is insane 😂
    Back in the day they used to say, Arsenal always fall short because they're trying to score the perfect goal, Arsene is happy to drop the best player for the good of the system even if they lose, Arsene is always inclined to lean towards a young player who fits the system over a world class experienced player.. now they say everyone is emulating Pep 😂 the premier league is this way because of Arsene Wenger... when Arsenal were weak, and poor defensively, they still entertained neutral fans, and were capable of winning vs the likes of Stoke, West Brom and Burnley... now the likes of Luton and Sheffield United can barely scrape a draw, and everyone bar Liverpool is well regimented, healthy, athletic squads... again, what was the main thing Arsene done at Arsenal? He changed their diet, he changed their mentality, he made the badge and the next game more important than the result and the individual player... Henry didn't cry when he returned to Arsenal because he scored, he cried because it meant more than all of his excellent goals combined... Rory and his blindspots for a sport he claims to be a fan of is immense 😂

    We have made a trade off, We see less long range goals but in return we have allot more last minute winners, Because teams are playing football, We have probably increased in late goals two fold, I remember 10-15 years ago people would just shoot from outside the area in hope it'll go in for a last minute equaliser, most of the time to no avail, but now teams play around the box and create a big chance which results in more late goals and many more last gasp winners.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold is a "maverick"-type player. Unique, high-risk-high-reward style. And people slag him off constantly. Huge portions of the BPL fanbase think he's a sub-standard player "with a decent pass." Trent benefits from a manager with unwavering belief in him, and a fanbase who loves him in a way only a local lad can be loved. In almost any other setting, the originality of Trent would have been beaten out of him by now.

    I think this is a natural progression of football. The historically maverick footballers are arguated at the same quality levelers most professional players nowadays, at least at the top leagues. Therefore, I believe the move towards being more of a complete team sport is natural to try and find the fine margins to win. No one player with exceptions of Messi, Ronaldo etc. Have the talent ceiling to individually impact games consistently.

  • @jlirving
    @jlirving Před 7 měsíci +2

    The thing about comparing older generation players to teams today is that we forget that they would have the same training, upbringing and benefits of players today. So if you dropped a top player in from 2000 to 2023, you would expect them to play to the same tactical standards.
    Example, Henry, all I would care about is his pace, touch and goal IQ the tactics of his game I would imagine would adapt. I would expect that if a 25-27 year old Henry was playing for Arsenal today he would 100% have to press and work within the system.
    Looking at the old style of long balls it just wouldn't fly in this game it's too low %. You would give the ball away so much.

    I swear we hear this every season, but there's always stunning goals. The biggest difference imo is footballers are better athletes now and the game is so much faster.

    • @SirMonkeySuit
      @SirMonkeySuit Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, there are always stunning goals but in general play, the brilliance of an individual has vastly dropped. City are the perfect example of this, there is a reason so many people say their games are boring. Because they attempt to go down the left, get cut off, bring it back across the pitch to go down right, get cut off, bring it back across the pitch to go down the left, so on so on. Rather than taking a player on. Granted Doku is at least trying it but that is the point.

    Tifo talked about this increasing in rigid tactics on their podcast ages ago
    And they showed throughout the history of tactics that it just goes in and out of style like a cycle. So teams that play with more flair and more freedom will come back eventually cause teams like Real Madrid have shown they the rigid style teams can be beaten this way
    If you want to watch more teams full of mavericks that watch the South American teams, their still full of it

    Gazza is walking in any team in the world, right now. What are you guys on??? Matt Le Tissier would press more nowadays more then Salah, Rashford and Saka. You don't need to be a headless chicken to be able to press. Why would Matt Le Tissier just walk around while the whole team is pressing?
    Sure football is more functional and Pep has made an impact but so did Klopp in bringing in development to get his team to press at a standard throughout the season. Moneyball might have been influenced by Wenger but it was the Liverpool owner John Henry who jumped on it after it became a thing in baseball. Liverpool do football's version of moneyball for sure. Klopp isn't opposed.

    Its harder to win with someone not working as hard case & point psg having 2 free roam players. But football comes full circle true 10s will return. Football is more beautiful now in my opinion apart from Brazil losing its "Brazilness", nostalgia plays a row in people's perception, try watching some old games it's not as good as people say. They are obviously generational teams like Scaloni's teams n The great Ajax teams.

    This discussion needs to be a bigger one as there are so many things to dicuss. Especially with the advent of technology, which seeks perfection only, no errors allowed, nothing messy.
    Thats not what we love about the game. Thats why i have always pushed back on those who are criticizing Refs so harshly. You cannot expect a Ref to be 100% right on everything all the time. There are too many variables, the game is too fast. And I am ok with that. In the Villa v City match, we didn't need VAR, the Ref was great, wasn't perfect and it was fantastic to moan about the ref after the match just like old times ... :)
    Anyway I digress, I miss diving headers, you rarely see them. Headers though still happen often, did you not see Watkins brilliant header against Bournmouth? Worth seeing again.
    Per managers, I think we yearn for that maverick, its why we like Ange. And I think Emery potentially has the right balance too.
    He does like to test the opposition, early. Has no problem with risk with his oftrn criticized high line offside trap that also acts as a way to push Villa forward. He will have a tactical plan for the whole game, isn't adverse to playing two strikers up front etc And he does like the element ofsurprise. He wants his players to enjoy their football, to be free to express themselves and he includes that into his tactical plan as he knows that often wins matches...

    Yeah I've been thinking about this for a while too. The stars of the game used to be the players. Now it's almost like the stars are the managers. I mean, Pep used to say that he can't influence the game much as a manager and it's all down to the players, but here we are huh? You look at something like the Ballon d'Or. The biggest candidates for the Ballon d'Or nowadays (outside of Messi) is just who scores the most goals in the best team in the world. I mean, these players are cogs in the system. Are they still great players? Yeah sure, but what about the Neymars of the world? All these modern improved facilities mean that players spend less time training/practicing just controlling the ball and playing with the ball, and way more on physical attributes because data tells you that these are the things that will help you improve in a pressing system

    Very good question...
    I have admired Pep as a winning manager, but I have never enjoyed watching City, too boring to watch, always preferred Liverpool.
    As a Villa fan, its been very sad to watch Jack lose that maverick spark. Weirdly or maybe not as he is a talented footballer he has improved and become technically a better player, holding the ball, helping out defence and even starting attacks from the back. But there's no spark... unless he plays for England where sometimes a spark will light up... sadly Southgate prefers the Pep Jack vs Maverick Jack 😢

    The individualism has been coached out of them. Perfect example - Jack Grealish. Absolute maverick at Villa, could win a game on his own. Now he's just another cog in Guardiola's machine. I can't think of any better poster boy for modern football than Erling Haaland - a giant Ivan drago athlete who exists to just finish 30 pass moves about 3 yards from goal.

    Bellingham is a good example but isn’t a great example. Madrid are probably the furthest team from a system team in Europe. Ancelotti has always been big on free flowing football. Only reason I say it’s good is because Bellingham does somewhat play a striker role in their new formation.

    I think a telling sign is when the biggest games become a real hard watch in terms of entertainment. Even 10 years ago a Chelsea vs Man United was almost always an incredible watch, when i watch now a Liverpool, United, Man City, Arsenal head to head clash i find the actual game itself massively boring. I will never stop watching because i like many have been playing, watching football for 30 years but the game has become really stagnant.

  • @rhysrm
    @rhysrm Před 7 měsíci +1

    I mean it's obvious, managers have a job to do and that is to win games and the way you win games is by scoring the most goals possible. They view the best way to score goals is to get the ball into positions where their chances of converting is at its maximum. Your chances of scoring is a lot less likely if you shoot from 30+ yards than if you work it to the 6 yard box and square it for a tap in. That's why Pep has City work it to the byline and it's actually what Wenger started when he first joined Arsenal.

    • @rhysrm
      @rhysrm Před 7 měsíci

      Same thing applies to long balls. The reason team play from the back is because if you play it long you are effectively giving up possession and making it a 50/50 ball. Keeping it on the floor and working it up the pitch play by play doesn't only give you chance to create something but I prevents the opposition from making something.

    Eto'o, Henry, and Ibra all have great stories about this kind of thing at Barca with Pep. Even when they scored, bc they didn't do what was specifically asked of them. They get subbed and benched for multiple games after that. People talk about the Germany national team directly attributing Pep to the downfall of their success. People in Brazil attribute all their best players coming to Europe as a reason they dont play "their" style of football.
    I think quick counter attacking football or last-minute desperation is the only time managers will turn a blind eye these days.
