That whole album, War, is definitely worth listening to front to back.
My husband is a massive U2 fan. I only knew the radio hits for years, but after I met my husband and began listening to more of U2's catalog, I fell in love with this song especially. I read somewhere that the song may have been written about U2 bass player Adam Clayton, who had struggled with alcoholism. The other three members of the band were Christians (hence the Bible verses in the song) but Adam was not, so this song was a sort of plea to him (the 'drowning man') to get on the right track. That's a theory, at least. I think this song is incredibly powerful and emotional. The instrumentation is beautiful, too.
It WAS addressed to Adam. And anyone else who is.
The intensity draws from the songs evangelical fervor. It quotes directly from Isaiah 40 " rise up with wings like eagles..we run and not grow weary". It's a song urgently expressing God's love. Great pick!
And it is addressed to Adam Clayton...
U2’s best songs aren’t on the radio!
This right here.
No joke.
Agreed. The WAR album is a gem.
Thank you. People talk alot of trash about U2 and sometimes I agree but THIS ALBUM SAVED MY LIFE when I was a "drowning man". This song is probably the most emotionally earnest on the album.
Thanks for reacting to this song. I’ve been a fan since I received Boy and my brother received War on Christmas of ‘83.
This song is particularly important to me.
In ‘88 my father, a Pentecostal Christian, decided that my brother and I were idolizing U2. As a result, he gave us one day to remove all of our U2 posters, tapestries, and anything connected to the band from our room.
Of course, we were pissed, but his threat to tear them down and burn them was not an empty one.
So, we took everything down and stored it to take with us to college in a few years.
The walls were bare for about 3 days. On the fourth day, we returned from school to see that my mother had hung up just one painting in our bedroom.
It was a bible verse written underneath a soaring eagle.
“But they that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength.
They will soar on wings of eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.”
Isaiah 40:31
My mom had heard us play U2 constantly and picked up on the biblical reference in Drowning Man.
She never said a word about hanging the painting.
She’s a righteous lady, and a wicked cool mom.
Grew up the same way pentecostal mom wanted nothing secular in the house. Dad hated this music 🥴 but I’ve always loved this little gem 👍🏼
Awesome story !!
One of the Best U2 songs, Supposedly Never Played LIVE.
The greatest U2 song ever. From the album that broke the mould, pre the Joshua tree hysteria. Remember seeing them at the Milton Keynes Bowl 1985 , supported by the Ramones and REM. Still love their music.
This isn't one of the better-known U2 songs, but it is a good one. I must have listened to the War album once a day, almost every day during my sophomore year in high school. Another good one from this album is "Surrender". Well, there are a lot of good ones, but that's another less-known track that is just great.
This is easily in my top 5 of all time greatest U2 songs. Another you should listen to is “One Tree Hill”
This album is when U2 went from really good Irish cult band to amazing international rock sensation. They experimented further on their next record, The Unforgettable Fire, which I’d argue is even better. With a standout performance at Live Aid and very refined sound on their commercial breakthrough The Joshua Tree, U2 were launched into the stratosphere and changed forever
Every time I hear this track it is like opening my own personal time capsule. Does anyone remember growing up and making homemade text book covers out of paper grocery bags in junior high or high school? I know that in many of those years for me at least one of my books would have the U2 WAR drawn in the album cover style and the lyrics of this track.
I think I still have a binder somewhere with U2 War on it!!! Nice Matt!!!
Yes! Yes I do!
@@lonedinosaur13 I must be a few years older. It was binders that had a blue jean like cover on them, and it was metal bands that we drew their logos....Scorpions, Ozzy, Judas Priest. U2 came into fashion when I was in 11th grade. War was always my favorite of them, with a close tie of their live album Under a Blood Red Sky
@@epearc I remember those blue cloth binders. I had Bad Company on one and Kiss on another!
When i was in high school in Germany the juniors and seniors had full length lockers. One weekend a senior took his locker door home and painted the entire front like the cover of their Under a Blood Red Sky lp cover. He was allowed to keep it with the expectation that he paint it back at the end of the year.
Nice one Teez. This song has almost a cult like following amongst U2 fans. It’s all about the intensity of the vocal.
Hell yeah. WAR is my favorite album.
Ugh, this song is so damn good!!
I was obsessed with this album in high school. It’s the album that made me a U2 fan for life. Going on 4 decades now.
One of U2's best, IMO. I've always heard this as the voice of God, or spirit, telling the drowning man to "Hold on." As Megan Click commented, he quotes from Isaiah.
Thank you for this! Drowning Man has always been one of my favorite songs and definitely my favorite U2 song. This song, since the first time hearing it, literally haunts me, in a good way. It’s enchanting, and the story behind it is phenomenal. Evidently Bono wrote it as a love letter from God to U2 bass player Adam Clayton, who was the only member who didn’t have faith in God.
One of the most emotionally powerful love songs ever performed! Incredible song choice! Thank you for featuring this beautiful song!
This remains my favorite U2 album
Probably my favorite U2 song.
Boy-The Unforgettable Fire; U2 were bigger in the years that followed, but never better. Excellent deep track! Thank you for posting this one.
My favorite song on "War."
I love this album, one of my favorite U2 albums ever. Ngl at first I thought this song was OK at first but now it has grown to be one of my favorites off this album. Its so good!
U2 has yet to perform this song live. They tried to on the 360 tour, but it never made it to the playlist. I guess they can’t replicate it Live.
U2 is the most popular Christian rock band ever! This song is beautiful!
U2 was an absolute cut above the rest of the young bands back then their songs were so deep and emotional for such a young group. This is an amazing record.
"Rise up with wings like eagles, you run, you run, you run and not grow weary..." Isaiah 40
Wow you went deep into U2. I haven’t miss a concert since 1987!! Rattle and Hum!!
When I was young I couldn’t handle this song. Thought it was to depressing. I grew to love it.
Awesome track! Saw them when this was released.... still a classic!
Songs such as this and "a sort of homecoming" are really poignant for the times we're living in at the moment.
Teez luv ya blood. Larry Mullen Jr is my favorite Irish lad who started this band and tries everyday to keep the rest of them in it
🔥 🔥 Always showing up for some U2 ! One of those bands with an easy 20 list of awesome songs ! 👌
Crazy how I was just learning this song on guitar, and the first vid that popped up was yours. Keep it real and thanks for sharing. BMM
Eternal ❤
I listened to this song a million times when I was in high school.
Go back to their beginning and start there. An Cat Dubh
Check out Scarlet by U2 another early classic song they wrote in their early years
Perfect song 👌🏻
From my view being a atheist it can also be seen as someone in a dark place and friend speaking to them . Just my opinion but again it hypnotic from start to end ❤️
Thanks for this! Haven't hear it for year but man did I listen to this song and the entire War album about a million times.
Love this song, and love lyrics videos. I never hear lyrics right.
A great song from a band who only held my interest up to the album Rattle & Hum from 1988. After that they were extremely sporadic in the quality of their output. But they were one of my favourite bands for years. First 6 studio albums are pretty much excellent all the way through, as are the 2 live albums from pre 1988
I hear ya Amelia... I think the problem was that their first 4 or 5 albums were so brilliant that we got spoiled. After Rattle and Hum they were still a really good band, just not AS amazing compared to Boy, War, October, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum. The later albums still had 2 or 3 hits on just about everyone (which most bands would die for), but weren’t nearly as prolific.
The “Under A Blood Red Sky (Live EP) I played it countless times when I first got it.
@@WhizMitchell Me too.
Great one, Teez. Thank you. You reminded me how I used to love this song.
love pedal steel guitar
Thats such a beautiful haunting Song...love it !!
Excellent song, layered with emotionality, vocalization and lyricism and definitely the instrumentation produces a beautifully fluttering dynamic while simultaneously providing a constant foundation of bass and rhythm. Love U2's Drowning Man. A lesser known track but it is a largely hidden Gem! Stellar video my friend, loved your reaction and assessment of this song. Keep it up!
Check out Rick Beato’s analysis of why “Drowning Man” is a great song.

Epic song!
Please try these from U2:
Bad
With or Without You
A Sort of Homecoming
Until the End of the World

Great song which sadly they couldnt do live because it has so many overdubs and different instruments and it seriously strained Bonos voice. There is another U2 song like this called Tomorrow which is heavier but has the same weird Irish instrumentation which they couldnt do live either
U2 awesome one. Hey Hitman, another one down. 🔥🔥
Thx Tracy!!!

Can I request songs that are in other languages or do you prefer the songs you react to to be in English?
Ooh, good idea. I've got some good ones to recommend.
I've done a bunch of foreign music so I'm open to it, I can still appreciate it even tho I don't understand the language lol
First?
FIRRRRRRST! Congratulations, girl!
