My husband is a massive U2 fan. I only knew the radio hits for years, but after I met my husband and began listening to more of U2's catalog, I fell in love with this song especially. I read somewhere that the song may have been written about U2 bass player Adam Clayton, who had struggled with alcoholism. The other three members of the band were Christians (hence the Bible verses in the song) but Adam was not, so this song was a sort of plea to him (the 'drowning man') to get on the right track. That's a theory, at least. I think this song is incredibly powerful and emotional. The instrumentation is beautiful, too.

The intensity draws from the songs evangelical fervor. It quotes directly from Isaiah 40 " rise up with wings like eagles..we run and not grow weary". It's a song urgently expressing God's love. Great pick!

Thank you. People talk alot of trash about U2 and sometimes I agree but THIS ALBUM SAVED MY LIFE when I was a "drowning man". This song is probably the most emotionally earnest on the album.

Thanks for reacting to this song. I’ve been a fan since I received Boy and my brother received War on Christmas of ‘83.
This song is particularly important to me.
In ‘88 my father, a Pentecostal Christian, decided that my brother and I were idolizing U2. As a result, he gave us one day to remove all of our U2 posters, tapestries, and anything connected to the band from our room.
Of course, we were pissed, but his threat to tear them down and burn them was not an empty one.
So, we took everything down and stored it to take with us to college in a few years.
The walls were bare for about 3 days. On the fourth day, we returned from school to see that my mother had hung up just one painting in our bedroom.
It was a bible verse written underneath a soaring eagle.
“But they that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength.
They will soar on wings of eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.”
    Isaiah 40:31
My mom had heard us play U2 constantly and picked up on the biblical reference in Drowning Man.
She never said a word about hanging the painting.
She’s a righteous lady, and a wicked cool mom.

The greatest U2 song ever. From the album that broke the mould, pre the Joshua tree hysteria. Remember seeing them at the Milton Keynes Bowl 1985 , supported by the Ramones and REM. Still love their music.

This isn't one of the better-known U2 songs, but it is a good one. I must have listened to the War album once a day, almost every day during my sophomore year in high school. Another good one from this album is "Surrender". Well, there are a lot of good ones, but that's another less-known track that is just great.

This album is when U2 went from really good Irish cult band to amazing international rock sensation. They experimented further on their next record, The Unforgettable Fire, which I’d argue is even better. With a standout performance at Live Aid and very refined sound on their commercial breakthrough The Joshua Tree, U2 were launched into the stratosphere and changed forever

Every time I hear this track it is like opening my own personal time capsule. Does anyone remember growing up and making homemade text book covers out of paper grocery bags in junior high or high school? I know that in many of those years for me at least one of my books would have the U2 WAR drawn in the album cover style and the lyrics of this track.

One weekend a senior took his locker door home and painted the entire front like the cover of their Under a Blood Red Sky lp cover. He was allowed to keep it with the expectation that he paint it back at the end of the year.

Thank you for this! Drowning Man has always been one of my favorite songs and definitely my favorite U2 song. This song, since the first time hearing it, literally haunts me, in a good way. It’s enchanting, and the story behind it is phenomenal. Evidently Bono wrote it as a love letter from God to U2 bass player Adam Clayton, who was the only member who didn’t have faith in God.

A great song from a band who only held my interest up to the album Rattle & Hum from 1988. After that they were extremely sporadic in the quality of their output. But they were one of my favourite bands for years. First 6 studio albums are pretty much excellent all the way through, as are the 2 live albums from pre 1988

    • @Ray1969.
      @Ray1969. Před 3 lety

I hear ya Amelia... I think the problem was that their first 4 or 5 albums were so brilliant that we got spoiled. After Rattle and Hum they were still a really good band, just not AS amazing compared to Boy, War, October, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum. The later albums still had 2 or 3 hits on just about everyone (which most bands would die for), but weren’t nearly as prolific.
