Adam Clayton is now also a Christian. Bono talks about this in the book Bono in Conversation With Michka Assayas and even Adam admited in an interview: I’m an alcoholic, addict, but in some ways that devastating disease is what drove me towards this wonderful life I now have(being a Christian)."

To me this is a song between a man who is Drowning in sin and trying to find hope and is asking God for help and God is replying. Saying I'll give you something that I Hold Dear... (Jesus). Hold on this love will last Forever. Take my Hand. This is my Favorite song on this album. My first show and first tour was the War tour in Tulsa. I love ,like a song and 40. Surrender is also great. Thank you for the review. Also Yes they have never played Drowning man live and that is really sad.

This U2 track is hauntingly beautiful, somewhat understated while possessing early industrial instrumentation - appropriately so, and driven by way of pure emotionality and an urgent atmospheric brilliance. This is a great song! I completely agree in how great the build in the song is. This song doesn’t just build, it swells and consumes. U2 have many songs which incorporates that mastery of buildup to climax. The feel is usually uplifting, exuberant, or forcefui or energetic. This swells and consumes.
The music, or the feel of it. is probably influenced heavily by Steve Lilywhite and Edge. You can hear the kind of rawness in power in production (especially drum) when Lilywhite produces and finishes The style of guitar playing Edge had already developed. The style of recording along with extra effects are probably a mix of Lilywhile and Edge as they both were heavily into exploring experimental sounds. In I Will Follow you can hear what sounds like bottles or glass. Turns out bottles and silverware were indeed used in the recording. Similar production was probably utilized here.
The atmosphere and structure (or somewhat lack of traditional one) could fit on The Unforgettable Fire. It could be the gateway song to that album.

A distinct U2 deep cut for a number of reasons which I will outline. 1/ Violin rarely appears on U2 track. 2/Acoustic guitar as lead is a rarity in instrumentality arrangement. 3/ Slide guitar newly introduced and rarely turns up in U2 song arrangement. WAR was U2 's make or break album. They recorded under intense pressure to succeed. If the album sales had not taken off they quite possibly would've broken up. WAR is essentially the alchemical rebirth of U2 into the U2 we know that conquered the musical world. It is an album easily forgotten and yet it is the makings of U2 into a mythic story. The Drowning Man is probably one of U2's least know tracks and yet it is the centre of the album WAR. It is a proclamation by Bono to his maker to turn bronze into gold. We are literally listening to Bono beseech God to use U2 as an instrument of his power to bring love and peace through their music to the people who need it. And that is precisely what God did. I mean this is a mind-blowing song on so many different levels. In the album WAR the songs bring us through the political problems society is labouring under both in Ireland and then the world what at the time to U2 as young men were key problems needing fixing. The conflict in Norther Ireland and the threat of a Nuclear war. And towards the end of the album Bono tears his guts out on record and petitions God to utilise him and the music of U2 to bring remedy to these problems. This is an opus of artistic achievement. U2 were in their early 20s when they made this extraordinary piece of art. And kudos to you for bringing this to a wider audience.

U2 have never had a concert where they all didn't play together until 1993. During Zoo TV tour in Australia Adam had broken up with his girlfriend at the time and started drinking very heavily. I was in Melbourne at the time (First year Engineering Degree) when they set the stage up in Melbourne a few days before the first 2 shows I went down to the MCG to see if I could get a glimpse of the stage. I ended up getting a great view of the stage through an open gate but not only that, I got treated to a full 2 hour rehearsal of the full concert setlist. The band needed a warm-up before the first shows and after this free little concert I waited around and Larry walked past with some crew members after the show but I wasn't quick enough to yell out and they disappeared out of view. I decided to wait around. A few minutes later Adam Clayton walked past and I screamed out "Hey Adam !!!" He stopped and looked at me and gave me a wave, and kept walking. I ended up going to both Melbourne concerts and then caught a plane to Sydney to see both shows. The first Sydney show I was in the front row and during Zoo Station I noticed Adam was missing and some other person was playing Bass (Adam's guitar technician) during the Bono speech before Even Better than the Real Thing, Bono mentioned Adam wasn't well and had to miss the concert. He said it's the first time we've played without all 4 members. Adam had been drinking heavily the night before and that's why he missed the show. The second night was filmed for the Sydney Zoo TV DVD and I was in the front row again. And Adam was back !!! He got sober after this event because he felt shame for letting the fans down. So it was pretty amazing for me to have a moment with Adam at the Melbourne Rehearsal and being at that notorious Sydney show where U2 played as a 3 piece. He has been sober ever since !!

The song itself is about drowning/struggling because one is far away from God and does not know God. It’s said to be about Adam Clayton, who was an alcoholic at the time, and the only band member who was not a man of faith(he now is). The words are spoken as if from the Lord, and meant to reach out and speak into the heart and give hope of a love that never ends (God’s love). This is why, the lines are all drawn from scripture(specially Isaiah 40:29-31).

The band nearly broke up prior to this album. Bono, The Edge & Larry were having great difficulty reconciling their faith with the pursuit of fame/recognition at what they believed was their faith in God. Adam was a non-believer, & often felt isolated as the others would at the rear of the tour bus and discuss the Bible & religious matters. Adam really suffered during this time - being on the outside while part of the group. The rest of the band were unsure if they were meeting God’s & their own spiritual requirements; several of their friends had become missionaries. I think it was around this time that Bono & his wife went & volunteered in Africa during the break after the tour. I believe they made the decision that during this time they would personally assess what they each wanted moving forward with their lives, & would accept/respect each other’s choices.
The one thing those who have worked closely with the band will say is that their loyalty to each other is next level. When Adam sought treatment for his substance issues in the US, Larry committed to staying nearby & emotionally supporting him throughout (I think for several months). I don’t know if Adam currently believes in God, but he has never stopped, stood in the way of, or asked Bono, the Edge or Larry not to express their faith in words or music, especially during the earlier stages of their career when such devotion to God could alienate an audience.

It really fits the U2 songwriting dynamic (at least up through "Pop" anyway). It starts with bass and drums. They're very steady here, and they are very steady in just about every U2 song. Not overly complex, but very steady. A lot of root notes and working strictly within the chord structure on base. Then guitar and vocals kind of paints over that canvas that Larry and Adam build. They certainly had a lot more musicians in studio for this song, and they actually did that a lot on the "War" album. This song wouldn't sound anything like this played live at a concert unless they used a crazy backing track. I wish that they'd try another album with backup singers and musicians (besides Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois).
