I would Like to suggest that you listen to a live version of this song I have heard it several times in concerts and it’s very moving. Also most U2 albums need to be listened to several times before you start to hear the message and the story 🎶😎keep the songs coming. One of my favorites is crumbs from your table.

When played live, Bono changed the closing lines to "take this city's heart... and keep it safe" so the end part at least became a little prayer to the city and its people they were playing in... I always thought that was a nice touch, especially as it was often one of the last couple of songs played before people made their way home. PS... Pretty sure the Edge safely keeps the Ark of the Covenant underneath his hat. In shrunken down form obviously. Right there almost in plain sight all this time!

Here's factoid yall might be interested to know: There's an alternate version of this song that was a special fan club release and a digital release later after the album, and in that version, in one of the instances of the "Yahweh" chorus, Bono tweaks it on the second utterance, singing it as "Yahweh . . . Yah-waited for me," essentially becoming "Yahweh, you waited for me," as if extoling the Lord's grace and patience. Link below:

You should listen to the live version on Vertigo tour. It is a better sound. My favorite verse in the song is this love is like a drop in the Ocean. When you feel the holy spirit it's like this warm feeling on your body like drops of warm water sliding over you. I love the live version the best.

Love your reviews the religious aspect of u2 has always fascinated me. I literally grew up in church and my dad is now a fully qualified vicar in the Church of England. So Ive always took interest and I got what their writing was about
      .
My mom was into u2 and always takes credit for me being a big fan as she would listen to u2 when I was in her belly 😃when I got into the band myself when I was 14 they were very happy especially as I got into Limp Bizkit at the same time 😃one band they didn’t approve of 😃
The one thing that I respect the most about u2 is they became the biggest band on the planet on their own terms. They didn’t change their morals or beliefs. It’s not the usual sex drugs and rock and roll story. They did it their way as born again Christians. That is some story 👌

When I became intrigued with Pop and the other album I got because my parents had loved it, War, I had given up on the church and God, but one night in my freshman dorms, while working on a paper and listening to those albums, I felt warmth rush over me.
