Why Have Belgium Underachieved?

- In this video, I cover the incredible up and down journey of the Belgian national team and try to analyze and give my opinion on why I believe the Red Devils have seemed to fail in making the most of yet another golden generation.
Belgium have had a storied international history, one that dates back as far as the first world cup in 1930. However they still seem to lack the experience needed to win or even make their first final, as historically they've been a side that has struggled to consistently qualify and perform at international tournaments. As another golden generation seems to be in the twilight stage of its existence, many will point to the Belgians historical pattern as evidence that they will once again fall in to a stage of mediocrity.

Dude .... the depth of your analysis and precise poetic vocabulary you're using is music to my ears. Not to mention the excellent storytelling.
ikr its so hard for me to focus and this is interesting from start to finish
Thank you for your kind words my friend! 🙏
Within the landscape of football content on youtube, the only original one could appreciate are tifo and athletic interests.
Your channel seems to be one the way to be the third.
Belgium should do what France does.....Get more Africans.....and boom world cup right there.......
We underperformed because of bad coach, because of lack of winning spirit, because in Belgium we don’t die for our country, because we didn’t rejuvenate the squad, because the coach played players for « rendered service » being stubborn with past glories players, because we had key players injured/out of form at every single tournament, because all planets have to be aligned for us to win something…amazing video by the way!
Belgium had a good enough squad to make a deep run in this World Cup, look at Croatia and Morocco and how far they gone, Belgium's squad was stronger than Croatia and Morocco but Belgium team was in complete disarray, players blaming each other, blaming the coach, fightingting with each other, saying we have no chance, saying we are too old, it's no surprise they failed so badly.
You cannot ever have such an attitude, you have to be a team and you have to believe in yourself no matter the odds, you don't even look at the odds, it doesn't matter if you have 1 in 100 odds, you take it 1 game at a time and give it your all every minute of the match and with a bit of good fortune you just might win against all odds. What were the odds of Morocco getting to the semi final? no one could have predicted that yet they got there despite all odds.
and it's not to late for Belgium either, sure their golden generation is finished, but they can do much better with an Average generation that plays as a team and full of heart, sometimes less is more.
No No Croatia produces World class players and play for each other Belgium is done no new players Croatia 🇭🇷 in this world cope 21 new players and more to come Belgium finito 2018 history and nothing more you wish that they can achieve more they reach limit
@@johnf321 I don't care if Belgium fails or not, I'm just saying that the reason belgium failed is because they don't play as a team, too many big egos there, that's why if they have less talented team that actually works well together, they will do better than the Golden generation.
@@johnf321 Lol, Belgium also had new players. Martinez just didn't use them. Belgium is a bigger country than Croatia and has a far bigger league and youth systems. Btw, Belgium already achieved way more. Euro 1972 semi-final, Euro 1980 final, WC 1986 semi-final, WC 2018 semi-final. So no, 2018 wasn't the limit lol.
What a great channel, so happy to have joined. It's just crazy to think how many chance Belgium had against Croatia (and Croatia got 3rd!), it makes you think how far they could of made it. Probably would have lost against Japan or Brazil, but they had the opportunities and they blew it
I hope Belgium’s future can reflect that of Portugal after it’s ‘95-‘06 Golden Generation era, where they just become a perennially strong side with talented players coming out of their system regularly
these videos are so good man! great storytelling! I hope this channel goes far... you deserve it man 👍

keep it up bro these vids are awesome. can u do a video on eden hazard sometime in the future? as someone who’s trying to learn more about soccer and it’s players, i’ve heard some things about his career but i think a retrospective of sorts would be great and u could do it really well
Definitely one that will eventually come, I will keep him in mind, thank you! 🙏
As someone who supported Belgium in 2018, I did not have much hope for their 2022 campaign. But not even making out of the group stage is truly disappointing.
Interesting take
thank you my bro!
You need to do a video on rising powers in football and some lesser known football countries getting better.
I wanna say that, I don’t think Belgium will fall far from this.
Unlike maybe 50-60 years ago when teams like hungry or Greece would stop being good because of political and economic reasons, I think this golden generation is what Belgium needed in the 21st century.
You need young kids to see the success that can happen, whether it’s just by doing well in a world cup, maybe not winning it. But just by doing well.
France have always been good, but I’ve definitely seen a lot more French young players nowadays compared to maybe even 6 years ago.
Look at Croatia, they’ve developed a lot of good young players, some probably motivated by the chance of playing with Modric, look at Argentina, many of those young players are very motivated by Messi.
However I definitely blame the organization, including the players and coaches.
How can you criticize each other after each group game? I definitely blame lukaku and hazard the most however.
Their little money moves and what not destroyed their own careers. Hazard wasn’t injury prone, nor was he not hard working, but as soon as he landed in Madrid, he stopped working hard and dieting, he some how is always injured at the peak of what is suppose to be his physical peak, that’s all on him. You know teams won’t sign players if there’s a chance they are as injury prone as some like Hazard right? Last transfer window there was an awkward situation where a player was gonna leave to a team, but after doing their physical, the team decided not to sign him because of his potential health complications, so he was sent back to his team.
Like hazard is not or was not an injury prone player, it’s all on him, and he really can’t blame anyone for him not helping the team as the captain.
Lukaku, bruh really destroyed his career by going to Chelsea, and then when he returned to inter, he didn’t even try to get back to his inter form, I literally never heard about him again until the World Cup, he used to be like the Ochoa of Belgium, the only time he would always show up was with the national team.
Surprising that Belgium hasn't produced a single striker within 4 years.Belgium should seriously look an alternative for Lukaku.
We have Lois Openda playing amazing for RC lens who is a great back up and exciting prospect(23 years old)
It's not surprising, there is a lack of class strikers everywhere. Football has evolved, it's very hard to produce such kind of beasts who are both tall and agile, physical and technical, head and both legs, speed, stamina which would make a perfect modern 9 specially for FC in formations with 3 up front who runs at least 11 km per match
Yeah we basically only have 1 striker and if lukaku's not playing we're shit everytime
@@Zargothrax_wizard-king We have other decent strikers. Problem is, Martinez only knew 1 system. He wasn't flexible, which is why we were bad if our best players didn't play, because the system was adjusted to them.
Lukaku is MASSIVELY underrated. He may have his faults but his international record shows that he is one of the top strikers in history in the world.
Do Morocco next!
Are you making one on Netherlands?
It's amazing how much potential this team had. Curtois still is a great keeper, Kompany was a great defender, KDB is a great midfielder and they had great strikers. They really can't complain. Freaking Greece won some silverweare with less.
Belgium are basically Tottenham at the international level
People don't realize Belgium isn't some very recent incarnation of a team with good talented players. Do people not remember Bart Goor, Lorenzo Staelens, Enzo Scifo and Luc Nilis? 🙄
It’s easy to overlook that cause they haven’t won much of anything
Finally, someone who knows about history. Most of the fans you see on here are casual fans, which is why they don't know much about anything that happened before 2000.
But yeah, Belgium reached a semi-final at Euro 1972, a final at Euro 1980 and a semi-final at WC 1986, along with multiple quarter final and Round of 16 appearances and a total of 20 major tournament appearances.
@@deandoesstuff3371Also you didn't mention the Euro 2016 which was eliminated by Wales in quarterfinals after knocking out Hungary in round of 16. This is a curse of knocking out Hungary in the previous round that also cursed France, Germany, Portugal and Italy in later tournaments.
💚
This loss to morocco was so unexpected I actually lost cash
Remember me when you're famous
I appreciate that 😂, I’ll never forget the Ford Mondeo! 🙏🤞
To be fair, they dominated Croatia and couldn't win the game only because of Lukaku. If he converted at least one of the chances he got, they'd be there, once again playing against Japan is the round of 16 and Brazil waiting for them in quarterfinals.
This tournament is considered as another success for Croatia and complete failure for Belgium, but it could have been the ither way round, if only...
They dominated only last 30 minutes with Lukaku. Overall in that match they were overrun by Croats by a few miles and possession by 10% etc. Croats dominated but they had their own problem - a lack of a bullet on FC position. No class attacker, strong team but toothless up front. That's why Belgium had better chances, but all of it last 30 min when Lukaku went in. What a beast, even unprepared, out of form, he was total damage to one of the best defenses at this WC.
@@mariomarino3020 come on belgium were the most dangerous. It was more belgium being crazy wastefull than croatia defending well. However belgium indeed didnt score, so croatia deserved to go through.
I believe here croatia has been on the lucky side of the equation once again. In 2022 they were still quitly low ranked for a semi finalist and it makes sense , out of 7 games played in the WC 2022 they have 2 wins 4 draws and 1 defeat which is very low for a semi finalist. If you take 2018 into account Croatia managed 2 podium finihes with 4 wins in PSO and 1 extra time win : Its litterally a unique occurence.
COnculsion is, Belgium would have very much fared the same they still have a better squad than croatia (im not belgian btw) but thats how football works. Even the best FC barclona or RM side drew or lost couple games per season , bad luck belgian it happened during the WC. Now decline is on its way
@@tayloryoung9803 I wouldn't say Belgium has a better squad, both teams had generations peaking in Russia 2018, Croatia was 2nd, Belgium was 3rd. Belgium didn't rebuild the squad, the axis of 4 players fell apart because 2 were completely out of shape in Qatar. And one of them, Lukaku can't win a game by himself, especially not playing after an injury. Croatia won this bronze with a team in transition with 2 undefined positions in the formation where 15 players have changed in the last 2 years and are still changing each game.
@@mariomarino3020 without lukaku the current team is nothing
When de bruyne said, "We're too old". I thought he meant hazard is too old to carry this so called golden generation.
Both Morocco and Argentina played rgeir hardest for tgeir country, every play they are very intense. For me that's what belgium lacked, no work ethic added with lack of chemistry and bad coaching with poor tactics. 2018 WC was their prime in recent years.
2023 is ur year💯💯💯
Thank you! I certainly hope so, may the new year bring all of us success! 🙏🤞
Yes
Aside from Eden & Kevin
Other are bang Average even if they perform.
What do you want?
I guess 2018 WC was their best display.
They are suffering from the Leopold curse. They are not going anywhere anytime soon .
Hazard let them down. instead of training he was upsizing his meal at mcdonalds
Their history is similar to France's before winning its first World Cup, always coming promising but nothing more than that, just give it time and another generation of great players that could learned of prior mistakes and they could suceed at least by winning an Euro. Just takr a look at Argentina, most people believed they were not going to lift the cup ever again and, aside from the controversies regardlnd their conceded penalties, they did the impossible and even without defeating a single tough rival on 120 minutes. If you are not going to beat the better teams at least make sure you will be able to eliminate them on penalties shootout.
For videos of this quality you having only 1.1k subscribers suprises
You said people called them the champions of friendly they lost to Egypt 🇪🇬 in a friendly Egypt is a very bad team and I am Egyptian I thought we would lose 3-0
its mostly because they dont have a definitive goal scorer. lukaku a huge disappointment.
Without lukaku we are nothing, the only time we played well this tournament is when he was on the pitch
Simple....great talent but the coach fails to get the right chemistry on the field.
They had the worst manager possible it's like David Moyes managing Manchester United
IMHO:
1) Top players (except de Bruyne) are lazy and not good teammates
2) outside of their huge stars the rest of the players just aren’t that great
3) unlucky, I mean it’s SUPER hard to win the WC or Euros
They were never that good outside of KDB and Hazard, and one of those two guys got fat.
How do you have
I appreciate it, thank you, i’ll keep the content coming 🙏🫡
I'm kinda afraid that Belgium might end up like Hungary.
Nah. Belgium had a great generation in the 70's and 80's as well. Belgium also has 14 world cup appearances, so it shows consistency. Belgium will still easily be a top 20 country after this.
Because they wasted their golden generation on Roberto Martinez
Blame has to fall on Roberto Martinez for me. He was never qualified to be managing a team of superstar talent. He did decent jobs at Wigan Athletic and Swansea but that's about the fruits of his manegerial loins lol. Mediocre and tactically inept coach they kept him too long in the job.
Naahh Belgium was Okay. the biggest clown of the tournament is actually Germany with their virtue signaling. what on earth were they thinking LMAO
Western European teams are now all full of foreigners.
Because they lost
Argentina and Belgium were my favorites at the World Cup so i was sad when i saw Belgium go home early
But Argentina won 🙂. Hope Belgium do well in 2024 euros.
What pisses me more was the way they lost to a team like morocco
