How Was The Golden Belgian Generation Wasted?
Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Yannick Carrasco, Axel Witsel, Mitchy Batshuayi, Dries Mertens.
At some point, Belgium had all these superstars in their team, but absolutely nothing came of it. How the hell did that happen?

I think the problem with Belgium's golden generation was their mentality, they always had generational superstars, but their mentality always failed, even the way De Bruyne talked after being asked about winning the World Cup 2022,he said that they were too old to win. They didn't have so many mentality monsters like Kompany and it really affected them, sad to see the of that golden generation though

I remember when Belgian players were interviewed about the 2021 Nations League and they talked about how it made sense that they would lose when they had to face France and Italy. It felt like a weird mentality because, while France were the reigning World Champions, Italy was in the middle of a crisis since they haven't been in a World Cup after 2014. Stop being so easily satisfied. The Dutch have a totally different mentality, also a small country, but they reached 3 world cup finals, won a European final, had 3 clubs winning the Champions League(or called European Cup in the old days) 6 times, won world titles with 2 clubs, and the women won a European title and reached a world cup final. The Dutch men also reached a Nations League final, and countless youth teams became Europe champion. So yeah, stop being so easily satisfied in Belgium, always strive for the highest! There is a reason why the Dutch ended up in 7th place in the medal ranking of the 2020 Olympics with 36 medals, with Belgium at #29 with 7 medals.

  • @NIDELLANEUM

To be fair, in almost every competition, they were eliminated by an eventual finalist (and 3 times out of 4 by the eventual champions if you include the 2021 Nations League). Euro 2016 was an exception, but still Wales was a semifinalist (while Qatar 2022 had not one but two eventual semifinalists in that group). It's not like they were randomly knocked out by teams who had a poor competition.
Not to mention, one could say that there was the same "issue" as the English Golden Generation of the 2000s: while they were great players, they weren't the only great team in the World. Germany, Portugal, France, Italy and Argentina (just to mention those who won the last competitions) all had great teams when they won

In 2018, I'm sure it was bad luck to face France. Their 2 Euros were probably disappointments. In the Nations league, their loss against France, which was ignored in the video, showed how they got overwhelmed by the events leading to their loss. In 2022, the so-called "Golden" Generation (not in Thibaut Courtois' opinion, I'd simply say Talented Generation) was seemingly over before the tournament even started. Unless a miracle had happened against Croatia, their final chance was probably Euro 2021.

The next generation of Belgian players seems very promising despite the big shoes they'd have to fill after the last generation. A lot of their U23 players are playing very well in a top 5 league right now and the even younger prospects that are coming through are also very good. In the attack, there's Jérémy Doku, Loïs Openda, Johan Bakayoko, Charles De Ketelaere, etc. As for the midfield, there's Amadou Onana, Roméo Lavia, Arthur Vermeeren and Mandela Keita. The defence is most likely gonna be their weak point, with slightly less promising players like Arthur Theate, Ameen Al-Dakhil, Zeno Debast, Maxim De Cuyper and Koni De Winter but that could still be sufficient honestly. And finally in goal there's Maarten Vandevoordt who's gonna be playing for RB Leipzig next season. Overall, not too bad, but again: it's hard to say right now if they'll become as good as the generation that just went by.

Argentina thought first how to neutralize France and because of that (and not counting the help they received throught the whole tournament) were able to hold France for almost the whole match. Had France thought how to neutralize Argentina they would've never conceaded a goal. In terms of talent, yes this was Belgium's Golden Generation as they boasted a lot of very good players Eden Hazard Kevin De Bruyne Romelu Lukaku Thibaut Courtois Dries Mertens Yannick Carrasco Vincent Kompany and others yet couldn't win a major tournament with these group of players. Failed to win the Nations League lost the semifinal in 2021 against France after leading them by 2 goals, at World Cups, they got knocked out of the last 16 against Argentina and the last World Cup they failed to get out of the group stages and in Euro 2016 they crashed out of the quarterfinals to Wales, Euro 2021 quarterfinal exit to eventual champions Italy.
For many years, Belgium were ranked as the number one country in the world and I felt like 2018 was their best chance of winning an international tournament. The reason for that is Eden Hazard was at the peak of his powers same with the likes of Thibaut Courtois Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertens, and Kevin De Bruyne was approaching his prime years too and a lot of their players were at a very good level but unfortunately in the semifinals lost narrowly against France even if they played much better than them. A big issue with this team was being unable to deliver in key moments which is why they failed to get over the hump in international tournaments and it was obvious in 2022 that they had no chance of winning the World Cup and this caused problems in the dressing room.
After years of underachieving in big international tournaments, Belgium had a disastrous World Cup last year getting knocked out of the group stages and Kevin De Bruyne said that they were too old to win the World Cup and this also didn't help their on field performance and a lot of the players felt like 2018 was their best chance and not advancing past the group stages was surprising to say the least, there was never a feeling that Belgium had a chance to win the World Cup. With Eden Hazard retired, the likes of Kevin De Bruyne Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois not getting any younger and both De Bruyne and Courtois are both out with serious injuries, it's clear that Belgium's Golden Generation hasn't delivered in these international tournaments and they have promising players they can rely on in the coming years Jeremy Doku Openda Leandro Trossard Youri Tielemans Romeo Lavia etc, let's see what'll happen with the next generation of players for Belgium because if those group of talented players couldn't win an international trophy, I don't expect much from them in the future.

They were just unlucky against france. lots of time wasting and slow gameplay in that match. They were the best team in that tournament, but the best team don't always win.
