      And it's realistic. His credits aren't super extensive but he's gotten substantial work. But his focused approach paid off in landing an agent in 4 short months. And everything he says makes sense. Sending out headshots didn't work for me.

    Never give up. Know your type, ask others who you are authentically. Keep it positive. Be interested in those people who can help , but don’t ask them for anything. Find a good coach who can guide you who is a working actor and stay with that coach till you are able to understand how to direct yourself. Never stop getting better.

    I've lived in Los Angeles my entire life (50 years) and have known a lot of actors(hundreds maybe thousands) AND worked in the industry for a couple of years. There are 150,000 actors in Los Angeles. ONLY about 6000(4%) are EVER working at any given time(per SAG) - mostly non speaking roles/ the backs of your heads / 10 seconds in a Del Taco commercial - (Yeah REAL acting- huh?). and only about 600(.4% - that is POINT FOUR PERCENT) make a living from it - THIS YEAR. Next year it will mostly be a DIFFERENT 600. And a living doesn't mean a Hollywood hills mansion. It means a living. Regular work for regular bills - rent. utilities, groceries, gas...etc. Also consider how much money was spent on the career - photos/ agents/ acting boot camps etc... that your other career (waiting tables, retail, etc...) your REAL career, actually paid for.From my experience most actors make it (Steady long term work) within the first 3 years - (that is that .4%) - OR NOT AT ALL...EVER.. Most actors give themselves a deadline and then back out and extend it. I know most actors go for decades and somewhere around 45 they quietly switch to being an agent or producing to not always be broke - many have worn out their welcome with family and friends that grew up and now have real careers, not professional auditioning for 30 years. Don't be one of those narcissists that talks endlessly about that tiny role where you "Nailed it" eight years ago... Your friends think you are pathetic. And you ARE.Not to mention, and experienced actor knows, that nepotism is rampant, as is the casting couch.Give your self three years and set a date. If that date comes and you're are not supporting yourself SOLELY by acting it will never happen...or I should say it is as likely to happen as winning the lottery Powerball AND getting hit by lightning.Move on and do something that pays a good living and be grateful for those 3 years. Stop lying to yourself and go be happy doing something else.

      Thank you for the comment and taking time to write it. You raise so many valid points. Curious what your take is on those who can't/won't live a 9-5 existence and are happy with (for lack of a better term) a "gypsy" lifestyle in order to audition, do theatre, even union extra work? In short, what if people don't want to give up the idea of becoming an actor (or any creative pursuit) and by choice want a life that honors this? Yes, their wallet may suffer. Maybe they can't brag at dinner parties about the latest deal they closed, etc. But packing it up for a corporate "real job" is too bleak. Thank you again! :)

    • @gkc1936
      @gkc1936 Před 6 lety +4

      When you are young, the life is fantastic. The parties, the awards ceremonies, the hobnobbing with big names Hollywood Hills parties...etc... I did a lot of it. Your 20s are a great time to enjoy that gypsy lifestyle..... But 99.9999999% of us start yearning for stability somewhere in there. It gets old. And you'll regret it. And you'll get tired of lying to yourself.
      Whether it is in a relationship or financial or emotional. You get tired of just another girl or guy. You want something that is solid and meaningful. You get tired of worrying about how you're going to pay the rent or make that car payment. That "gypsy" lifestyle gets old REAL FAST...
      When you cite that bleak corporate "real job", I think "Yeah, that bleak 6 figure income that takes care of me AND my family." I now travel out of the country and stay at five star resorts once a year EVERY year. I live in a beautiful home. In a beautiful area (DTLA) with my family. I NEVER Think, "Geez, I wish I was back in the single eating ramen noodles and being ...free?" Free for what? auditioning?? Paying parking tickets? Nonstop rejection. Parade of stuck up unfaithful girlfriends. My life is REAL not make-believe.
      Three years is the magic number. From my experience and research that is how long it will take to happen. If it does not happen after 3 years, it will NEVER happen.
      After that go be happy doing something else. IT'S GREAT!!!

    • @filmcourage
      @filmcourage  Před 6 lety +5

      Thank you again for sharing. Good to hear you've found contentment. Providing for a family and having an enjoyable life sounds like your decision was well thought out. Not sure I agree with the 3-year timeline. Everyone has their own risk tolerance. But having a comfortable life (not just stability) is definitely something to cherish. Appreciate you taking time to comment. :)

    • @gkc1936
      @gkc1936 Před 6 lety +1

      Three years is the mean. Certainly do not go past 5. 5 means it will NEVER happen. 5 becomes 10 becomes 20 becomes 30... It becomes a vicious cycle. Again i don't mean stardom. I mean stable income. Regularly getting work.
      Have great Sunday.

      Hello G. - I respectfully couldn't disagree with you more. It sounds like from your ignorant and discouraging rant that you failed as an actor, or as someone who tried to make it in this business. And thats fine, it's true that a lot of people don't make it in the entertainment industry. Its very competitive and there is 100% lots of rejection. But what gives you the right to judge people who are attempting to do THE SAME EXACT THING THAT YOU TRIED TO DO? I can safely say for myself that I have never been to a "Hollywood Hills Party", have never had an unfaithful girlfriend in Los Angeles, and have never lived the "Gypsy lifestyle' that you mention in your list of negative things about being an actor. Really? So unfaithful girlfriends are directly associated with the pursuit of an acting career? I didnt know that. I can also say that I have been at this longer than 5 years and am now making a living as an actor. Yes, paying all my bills and my rent from an actors salary. Your "magic number of 3 years" seems to be your own opinion. Morgan Freeman was 52 before he made a living as an actor. He had been pursuing the craft previous for 22 years. 22 years. So sorry G- I am happy you're enjoying your 6 figure income, your beautiful home, and your five star resorts, but I don't understand why you feel the need to tear down another peoples dreams? It sounds like you are angry or bitter that you did not succeed as an actor. But does that mean that we should all follow YOUR path? Are we all supposed to be envious of the way YOU live your life? Sounds very bitter and resentful G. There are plenty of actors, via hard work and dedication to the CRAFT, who didnt go to "Hollywood parties" and "hobnob with the stars" who are currently doing very well for themselves and possibly, JUST POSSIBLY, as happy and successful as you are. Imagine that. Yes G, my life is REAL too, not make believe. Don't tear people down man, life is already hard. For some, just the act of pursuing your dreams, EVEN IF YOU FAIL, is happiness enough. You should know, you tried to do it too...

      he is good looking and charismatic...things that can’t be be learned. A lot of actors start out that way and if they don’t learn acting after a few years they stop being actors.
