I’m a huge fan of Kimberly’s and I respect her immensely. I always look forward to her takes, and I look forward to future videos. I wanted to provide my perspective as a bisexual woman who loves Chappell’s music. I think anyone who’s come out to their family, who’s dreamed of living away, moving to a place where you can be your full self, sees themself in her lyrics. I had experiences with my mother when I told her I was bisexual, and Pink Pony Club makes me cry and smile every time I hear it. The resilience of “I’m gonna keep on dancing…” like, I’m going to keep on being my authentic queer self even though I can still hear the voices of doubt from far away. The feelings of exploring your sexuality, whatever that may be, are front and foremost on the record. I have no doubt that it touches lesbians/other queer women on a different level. I noticed Chappell’s skyrocket seems to be at least correlated with a lot of challenging emotions regarding bisexuality, especially this Pride month. I personally have dated different genders and am currently partnered with a man, and bisexuals are often asked to give a history of their dating to “prove” their sexuality. Sexuality is attraction, queerness is identity. This is a complicated conversation, but I think it’s worth noting that many if not the majority of songs on this album were written by Chappell while she was in a relationship with a man. I just wanted to provide a genuine, respectful differing perspective. I think we can relate to Chappell on different levels, and I relate to her experience in exploring and celebrating her queerness, even while she was partnered with a man, and I’m excited for her queer journey to evolve, and happy for the sapphic representation. And the lesbians deserve this representation and celebration. Bisexual women are attracted to multiple genders, men often being one of them, and are often still attracted to women even while partnered with a man. Different couples face this differently. Bisexual men also are attracted to men, and women, plus more at times (even though they’re often said to be gay in disguise). Very much looking forward to more content from Kimberly and am always appreciative to hear her insight❤

I hope we enter an era where we support the artists we enjoy instead of just consuming them. Ive wanted a pop girl like Normani for a while so I don’t mind being patient. That journey is just as important as the destination.

I think it’s really interesting to compare Chappell Roan and Normani. I completely agree with how you said this is Chappell’s moment and she was completely ready for it and had an artist vision which she executed perfectly. Arguably I think in 2019 Normani really had her moment but wasn’t prepared for it, she was on tour with Ariana Grande and everyone was seated for motivation then Normani stepped back and disappeared after the VMA’s. Normani can work her way back to that momentum but I think in late 2019-early 2020 if she released an album it would’ve been more commercially successful then Dopamine is doing now.

Sean & Victoria all worked for Fifth Harmony (so did Blair Caldwell) a lot of cool people got major starts there! Also she had to fund the Wild Side music video herself unfortunately

THANK YOU!!!! the Alright video is not it, BUT it’s not horrible in any form of that word. For me this imagery doesn’t fit the song at all, and maybe for me it’s due to what I ‘envisioned’ for it. But I totally get what she was going for & the honoring for her favorite artists, but ‘for me’ this video just missed the essence of the song.

I do want more of what she has to offer because I feel like mainstream music has only just cracked the door open for unabashedly queer men- from lil nas x, Troye Sivan, years & years and Orville peck etc and it’s not that lgbtq+ people haven’t been loving and living vicariously through mainstream pop for… forever, it’s not even that there haven’t been gay artists or that the ones I listed just appeared here two years ago- it’s we’ve only recently reached a point of being as unabashed as honest as messy as sexy as straight counterparts. When I look back to something like Adam Lambert’s music video from the mid 2000s I remember thinking you’re wanting to be sexy but you can’t outright have a man grind on you in this video he can kind of graze your shoulder off camera a little. Now Troye and lil nas x all but show hole on main and I LOVE IT. But it’s kind of insane it took this long to get there and I’m not saying we just need space for queer people to be slutty I’m saying we need space for queer artists to do what they want and bring something of interest to the table. And I think we’re starting to see a few queer women in music do that finally without tee hee nudge nudge I kissed A GIRL but it’s ok I totes have a boyfriend

I’m cheering for Normani and I will be streaming her album everyday all day! Let’s not pretend that our dark melanated artists don’t get unfair treatment. We need the stand with her and encourage her.

I’ll always be grateful I went to Chappell’s show in October before she skyrocketed, it’s probably the most affordable ticket I’ll ever buy for her. She was incredible!

Normani has talked about having to pay for most of the “Wild Side” video with her own money. That leads me to believe that she hasn’t really had her label’s backing and hasn’t really had a budget since “Motivation”. Normani has to take at least a bit of the blame. Labels wanna see you willing to do the work and commit the grind. For whatever reasons, Normani hasn’t shown them that. But at the same time, it’s apparent that they wanted her to lean more pop and hasn’t really been pushing her or giving her a budget in years. It’s a messy situation. The album itself is passable and has some standout tracks, but it does play it very safe. And you just can’t put out your first album with no visuals or performances. If she really, really wants it I can still see her getting it. But she’s gonna have to put in that work.

I think Normani may be too much of a perfectionist and anxious to be an artist who connects with her fans despite the (very understandable) setbacks and shit happening behind the scenes. If she's not willing to pull a chloexhalle and perform on some tennis court or pull a Raye and open up about mental health, connect w others about that... then I fear for her ambitions

Normani worked with Sean Bankhead first because wildside was like his major intro to the masses. Then he went on to do Industry Baby, Up, etc. Kollin started as Cardi’s stylist and he also styled the Wildside video

I agree Victoria’s venues were tiny!! I was second row packed like a sardine barely breathing 😂😩. I know she’s currently doing festivals but I pray the venues for her own tours are much bigger!!

Hey Kim!!! I hope all is well❤. But pertaining to Normani, there are so many variables to why this album failed. While it’s a solid debut album and I enjoy 1/2 of the songs, Normani should’ve dropped this in the era of 2019-2021. The reception would be so much better. 2. If this was the opportune time for her and the label to drop this year, right after the album reveal, 1:59 should’ve came that same week. Don’t make us wait 2 months for an album track. 3. Even better if Normani led with Candy Paint and dropped a visual same day. This is the song your fans have been begging for so why not lead the album with this. 4. Since the budget wasn’t there, she should’ve took a page outta JT book and do guerrilla marketing. I should’ve seen dopamine everywhere on her CZcams giving us outtakes of making the album, dance videos of her with Sean Bankhead to candy paint, and even playing into the hotline with texts. 5. Dopamine could’ve been a sickening EP in 2020/2021. Wild Side, Waves, All Yours, Insomnia, Big Boy and Still are perfect for an ep and throw Candy Paint as a bonus track. This would’ve allowed her to curate a sound that pleases the fans and her while constructing the album later. It worked great for Coco Jones.
