And that was 8 years ago...she was telling us. But of course the people who only know Monae from tightrope...put whatever narrative they wanted on her instead of actually listening
It's the people who follow her on IG being shocked for me. To paraphrase a tweet I saw, Janelle's feed has been full of breasts, booty, and baddies for *at least* the last five years. 😄 People can feel how they want about it, but making up all these false narratives like their nudity or queerness is new to justify their discomfort is... interesting to me.
I follow her and she's BEEN like this for a long time. People just either never paid attention or did not become fans UNTIL she started baring it more. Wild.
I agree. Since I was in college she’s been slowly transitioning into the person I see today in a way that seems organic because it came out little by little and to me felt like she was becoming more open with the public with her physical expression.

As a Janelle STAN since the beginning you hit the nail on the head. People are not paying attention to the STORY and brilliance and it's pissing me off. Even if she was just showing skin for the sake of it that doesn't matter anyway but as you said it's well thought out and is part of a narrative she has masterfully crafted. ❤
“I got juice for all my lovers. I got juice for all my wives. My juice is my religion. I got juice between my thighs” Janelle Monáe 🤣 what are people bugging out about?
There's people who are fans of the earlier work but they haven't kept up with the newer stuff. But also Janelle can be a bit hit-or-miss with the live performances in that the concert is either all-Cindy Mayweather or all post-Cindy. So if you attend concerts because you're expecting a particular song, then it's likely that Janelle Monae's concerts aren't for you. For instance, I attended EssenceFest in 2013 and Janelle's performance was all-Cindy. I absolutely LOVED it but others lambasted it. This was back when Janelle was getting more prominence with Black people through the Electric Lady era, so people were only familiar with songs like "Q.U.E.E.N" and expected that. So it sounds like all the songs for the 2023 performance were post that.
I see why some people who haven’t listen to her would think this isn’t cute but, I’ve been listening to her for years and she’s been doing/saying this for years…
I wasn't paying attention, so The Age of Pleasure caught me off guard, but when I saw they had "flashed" people, knowing all the innuendo and stuff just in Dirty Computer, knowing the political climate where (generally) old white men are trying to control trans and women and femmes and any non-binary people's bodies , I was like, yeah I get where she's coming from. That other man is super weird. Let people do what they want if it doesn't hurt anybody! Also, like, what about the music industry hasn't at lest had very explicit sex references for the past 100 years? Like, the queer origins of Jazz and blues were all about sexual relattionships. They couldn't always be so explicit cause of censors, but good lord.
‘The Age of Pleasure’ seems to be an understandable next step for Janelle following ‘Dirty Computer’. It doesn’t feel like that much of a departure. The people who are shocked just haven’t been checking for her since ‘Electric Lady’. Obviously you’ll feel whiplash if you haven’t listened or watched her in 10 years.
@@Heyu7her3 I think a lot of that audience completely ignored dirty computer even though it was critically acclaimed and bagged a Grammy nomination for AOTY.

@@zaboomafooba exactly. Janelle is nothing if not a free thinker. The comments are coming from people who used to hear but not listen to what she said in her music.
Exactly what I've been telling people who are SHOCKED by this. I know they can't have listened to Janelle's music like that. They can't have paid attention to them like that. But the funny part of it all is, if she wasn't dressing like this, they'd STILL be ignoring her and her amazing talent. They know her dressing like this is the ONLY thing that even brought her to their attention. Which just backs up the belief that women and feminine presenting people, especially black ones, in the entertainment business don't get the attention they deserve UNLESS they are showing skin. It's almost hilarious. Also, if you're old enough, you'd know Uncle Luke has been exploiting women's bodies for gains for a long time, but suddenly has an issue because a woman he thought was "proper" is doing it for THEMSELVES.
It’s hilarious and sad at the same time. I’ve grown up with Janelle Monae-I think the first time I saw her was in her tuxedo era in ESSENCE magazine when I was 16 or 17. I was a fashion designer then, playing a lot with black, white, and red, and I thought she was fascinating. I also figured she was queer, something I would discover about myself only a year later. One of my best friends at the time, a white bi male filmmaker, gave me the Electric Lady CD; we also watched the Dirty Computer Emotion Picture together. I was so thrilled to have found a fellow dark skinned, femme Black entertainer who was I embodying this beautiful, playfully dirty girly queerness. When they started teasing The Age of Pleasure, I had almost forgotten that people didn’t know they made music about their joyful Black queer femme experiences and self expression; it felt like all of us Black queer folks living life unapologetically were invited to Janelle’s pool party. When all of these straight, cis Black musicians started coming out of the woodwork and criticizing Janelle I was genuinely shocked. Ben Shapiro had figured out what Janelle was doing way back with PYNK, and he still has a better understanding of the work than these Black musicians who’ve been commenting. It made me so sad to realize that there were only a few of us who actually engaged with/appreciated Janelle’s art.

It just wasn't as apparent until the Dirty Computer Era with songs like PYNK, Screwed, Make Me Feel, and Take a Byte. That was the era when they REALLY started to show some skin and embrace their sexuality and identity gradually. If people actually listened to their songs such as Mushrooms & Roses, Givin' 'Em What They Love, Q.U.E.E.N., Primetime, Sally Ride, and Yoga, it shows that Janelle has hinted at their queerness and them being a sexual and liberated being. They were just real coy about it with their innuendos, so it goes to show that people really haven't been paying attention to their messages they have been conveying for YEARS. Janelle has ALWAYS been talented, but when they were wearing suits at the time, they would use their looks to bring other women down because they were modest with their clothing, but now that they are being free with their body, it is suddenly an issue?! Make that make sense. Janelle said it best, "Categorize me, I defy every label!" People need to leave them alone and let them do their thing!

That's the problem. These people aren't fans. They say the buzz Janelle been getting and now are deciding to form a funky ass opinion behind it. Just taking generic "we don't like when feel presenting folks show their body" and are throwing it at a wall.
I have 5 things to say about this and similar controversies: 1) I listened through "Dirty Computer" close to the time it came out and enjoyed it, mostly no skips. 2) I don’t wanna hear SHIT from "Uncle Luke" much more than I want to hear shit from Snoop Dogg. 3) I think hypersexuality as a formula and Branding is overplayed by females and women and more annoying than not because it is not clear that they are free to do so for an ACTUALLY revolutionary reason that has to do with their own freedom--most are still signed in some way to some sexist, woman-hating dude who wants to reduce us all to the virgin-whores in his fantasy. 4) Everything an Artist and/or Entertainer offers is NOT something any of us are OBLIGATED to praise, accept, nor financially support for fear of being labelled a "Hater" or on the wrong side of history. I'd at least like to know what their motive is and females and women who do such things as deep throat a microphone--like what are they trying to accomplish?? When I take in a show, I'm not there to interact with porn, and I can't be the only one who feels that way: to me, more times than not, the lines are too blurred. 5) I think the music consumers and especially music appreciators need to be careful not to allow the "Clapback" from these entertainers and celebrities to get them into a place where we are divided and conquered: we cannot hold those with non-representative status and resources in our society accountable when it counts if they know they can easily create an "Us against us dynamic".
Several years ago, Janelle Monae did a nude photoset on Instagram for their birthday. Now in 2023 people are like "weren't you just in a tux?" I'm so tired, man.
If you follow them on instagram almost every post she has, now, has people talking about "what's going on" or "why are you showing skin and falling to the hollywood machine" and all kinds of wacky stuff.
If a man had exposed a woman's breast (not by accident like JT and Janet but on purpose like Trey Songz), men would laugh and defend it. Its not the nudity they hate but rather the autonmy she expressed by doing it herself.
Results of the podcast bro's "spitting facts". They've regressed and don't understand why someone like Janelle would continue to go forward. I appreciate you giving the context, but I also feel if she wasn't a black woman we wouldn't need it, it would just be a tame controversy. Some people are on keke palmer just the same too smh.
Always a BW ONLY victim moment. I'm curious what color is Madonna and Cher? You know the women that started all this and the first to get criticized and tamed? What color is Miley that got criticized and censored for being completely naked??? They BLACK WOMEN???
The ppl who call themselves fans of hers that have an issue with what shes doing now, never really were fans. Never really listened to her storytelling in her music. Never followed the timeline frfr. They are determined to stay on her areolaaaaaaaaaaa 💃🏿💃🏿 with theur fake outrage.

I’ve been following her and knew this was coming, but damn they came harder than expected with age of pleasure.
She has that Prince energy, I love it.
I too was confused by why everybody was acting up.
Oop these notifications is ON ❤
I haven't stanned Janelle since the Cindy Mayweather era ended. MANE, I MISS CINDY! 😢 But oh well 🤷🏾♀️ it is what it is.
I wasnt paying attention 😂 thanks ma'am
Will your videos ever be long again?
I have 5 things to say about this and similar controversies:
1) I listened through "Dirty Computer" close to the time it came out and enjoyed it, mostly no skips.
Maybe I'm not in the spaces where people are upset. I have only seen (much-deserved) praise upon praise upon praise.
If you follow them on instagram almost every post she has, now, has people talking about "what's going on" or "why are you showing skin and falling to the hollywood machine" and all kinds of wacky stuff.
'The age of pleasure' is a logical progression from 'Dirty Computer'. This doesn't surprise me at all.
If a man had exposed a woman's breast (not by accident like JT and Janet but on purpose like Trey Songz), men would laugh and defend it. Its not the nudity they hate but rather the autonmy she expressed by doing it herself.
Luke Campbell…like wow. Lol.
I’ve been on Janelle since Cindi Mayweather, they’ll be aight.
I agree as well. People are shocked because tgey dont really follow her music. I thougyt she was going here when Yoga came out. This is the same girl who made a video where everyone was dressed as labia's. Come on people. Let the lady create. She is an artist and must contonue to evolve
I’m just sad she’s not a robot anymore ☹️
Thank you because the critiques are simply foolish 🥴 like did nobody fully digest dirty computer?!?
The only people feigning outrage are non fans that never bothered to take interest in her until now
💯
People are mad at Janelle?? The only thing to be mad at is that the album only runs for 35 mins!
Luke Campbell... needs to never open his mouth up about women's choices good or bad ever. The nerve.
She had a nipple cover on. People need to relax.
@@mothershipother1425 How are you to know it didn't come from an authentic place, though? Especially since you admit she's been doing it for a while? Y'all literally make no sense, lol.
@@mothershipother1425 not authentic? I'm not sure you know who you are talking about. Janelle Monet has been talking about free the nipple for years now. It's her real opinion she's been passionate about. There are like 2 interviews on CZcams that came out within the last month or so, before the concert, where she explicitly discussed loving her titties now and wanting them out.
@@mothershipother1425 also creatiely lazy how??? It ties into the sexual liberation theme of her new album.
Tbh I stopped paying attention after the Archandroid. Her music didnt hit the same after that. But I'm all for women doing whatever makes them happy. Janelle can express her creativity and individuality as she pleases❤
Janelle is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns - they use several pronouns but from what I understand they prioritize they/them. Agree with the conceit of this video though.
regardless of how long shes been doing it. her platform is bigger/more visible NOW & its lazy and classless to stoop to the lows of flashing to garner attention instead of focusing on her music/talent smh ill be so glad when the hyper sexualization trend DIES
@@mothershipother1425 i definitely agree
girl why even post a video if it’s only 2 minutes.. i know you got a paywall but at least give us SUMTHN
She gave y’all 2 mins 😂 If you want more, her paywall is there or you can rewatch her other videos! It’s really that simple.
You date White guys or black guys ? 👀
Why is this a question on this video that isn't about Kim?
