Close to 20 years in the business, I have been around wood all my life, my grandfather was a furniture builder, my great great grand father built violins back in the old country. I have worked at a lumber yard handling all types of woods from domestics to exotics, surface sanded hundreds of thousands of board feet from Oak to Cherry to Walnut. Cut into more wood than you can imagine on a jump saw.
I am self taught with some help from a great friend to teach me the finer details, thank you Doug, and I just keep plugging away.
What was a way for me to make a guitar for myself became an obsession; at one point I had 50 guitars laying around. Now its time to share my knowledge, ask away I will answer as much as I can. Be safe and have fun!

This is really cool
What do you think about bloodwood for fretboards? I got wenge and bubinga as other options for my next bass build...
Thank you! Excellent.
This looks absolutely amazing - is this steel wool you're using at 6.27 to dull the finish down? Would you recommend this over sanding at this stage & why if so? Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.
why? lol just wait it will happen naturally 😂😂😂 its like you wanted that guitar to age and then die 😂😂😂 just wait it will age then die
You mean khaya wood?
I've always wondered how much does a job like that cost?
Beautiful neck, well done! but I really have to ask.. Why aren't you masking your fretboard with tape when working on the frets? Even when glueing the inlays, it would've prevented the spilling into the wood, like you mentionned. I'm not judging, seriously wondering if there's a reason why you don't do it.
How would you compare this to 2k clear in durability and shine?
Beautiful work Big D! Thank you!
i have been watching these on repeat this one is one of my favourites. Was thinking the same as you mentioned the symmetry on an SG body would work so well on that
Hard to take advice from someone who calls them self a “luthier” but can barely play a lick.
‘Ey, Derek - which part’a da Midwest d’ya come from? 😂
any specific type of steel wool?
Is there a way to get in touch with you? I have a great les paul I'd like to turn into a nitro dark back gold top. deep dark translucent finish on the back and a darker copper aged gold on the front. no relicing. its a 2002 les paul classic.
Takes some talent and effort to fuck up guitar like that (previous owner).
That gave me an idea of using colored filler and the after sanding to use the leather dyes application the same as each color filler was applied. Like in a dragons breath red, yellow , brown filler . Then work on the dye again to do the dragon breath and fade it all in
Yes!!! This is like Ibanez Vintage Violin or PRS McCarty Glow...well, close enough anyway!
So much work!
You have to hit the cedar or all soft woods and a lot of hard woods with sanding sealer before ever applying any stains to get them uniform instead of looking all splotches dark then light! Try laying down sanding sealer before stain you will see what I’m speaking about! That will make you staining look professional instead of high school shop class!!!
Is the switch wired in reverse or is it the pickups? It gets much brighter in the up position which should normally be the neck position pickup. Awesome job and a beautiful rich looking finish.
How do you file the new fret edge with out destroying the binding
Unbelievable work you’re a very calm patient man .. I’d have fucked that in the bin 😝😝😝😝
hes going to regret the big run on the side and wiping it on is not recommended. spray it or at least use a pro brush or foam brush but dont wipe it on because its a recipe for some serious wet sanding
What shade of black is that. I’m trying to paint a small section at the top of the headstock. It looks like a satin black
if the wood of the body is so important to the final sound as luthiers say, why do you guys always fill it up with holes, wires, metals and plastics? those are acoustic obstacles. chhanges in constructive materials work as acoustic filters, that let somme frequencies pass threw, but stop or reflect some others. why the guitar shapes prioritize ergonomy over acoustic? guitars shapes are not audiodynamic, they don't have water drop shapes, or elyptical, or spyromorphic features, such as the volutes in violins heads. it's the oposite, they have cuts to make them easy and more confortable to play, os just to look cool. why there are no guitars whhich have the electronics on a board outside the body of the guitar? that would defenitely improve the inner conduction of sound waves, I'm I wrong?
I have a maple body that is darker abd more red than I want for my bright turqoise finish. If I bleach the whole top will I lose some of the grain and figuring patterns?
Cool finish!
I was thinking of doing this on quilted maple, but first dying black or dark blue, then sanding back, then white wash. I am thinking that’s how Jeff Kiesel may be doing his blue Jean or ghost finish. Have you tried that?
just make a new neck you would be done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've bought and had to fix so many marketplace guitars from boomer age folks that for some reason think they have a clue what they are doing, and they just end up making a huge mess out of the setup. for the love of god. LEAVE IT ALONE.
great video, well explained, genuinely useful as a learning tool, lovely final result. thankyou. how is this a cherry burst??? i'm sorry but it just isn't. i don't understand. thanks though, great vid
Is there anyway to lighten/bleach a piece of maple to make it take color better? Maybe leave it in the sunlight indoors like in a window ceil?
I'm trying to do more of a blue green turqoise/teal do you think if i did say 50 turqoise 25 green 25 neutral that could achieve that color? This is a little more blue than I want
Hey BD Question on the steps I am dying a maple top guitar with Angelus dye here are my steps, let me know if this is correct. 1. Sand back to smooth around 400 grit 2. Dye darker color and dand back 3. Dye lighter color 4. Spray vinyl sanding sealer 2 coats. 5. Sand back to 600 800 6. Zpoxy grain fill and sand back to 600 to 800 7. I have an airbrush stencil im doing here. 8. Spray 2 more coats of vinyl sealer 9. Sand back to 800 10. 3 coats of Spraymax 2k clear 11. Sand back to 1000 level sand 12. 3 more coats of 2k 13. Level and polish sand 14. Buff Thanks
HEY HEY MORA.... IM FILMING !!! lol looks nice. about to try my first burst build
I would love to see Ibanez Vintage Violin, or PRS McCarty Glow attempted. Those are some fantastic, amber honey brown bursts that just look "to die for"
And....the stripper isn't available anymore.
Thanks Derek for my guitar body , I’ll put up pics when the guitar is finished
I’m digging the sound track, I call that “Litemetal….🎉
That’s a lot of money in to power tools. Hand tools too. Great job 🎉
That came out absolutely fantastic!! Great work! 🙌🏻🎸🔥
Not my favorite color, but you did a very nice job!
You've probably already answered this, but you know how tru oil really brings out the grain in something dyed. Will the sanding sealer affect this in any way? Would the grain pop as much if I just gloss coat it anf forgo the tru oil?
I love your videos. I keep going back and forth between hiring you to do an upcoming guitar i plan to make, but i really want to finish it myself...
The amount of stuff I learned from your videos is amazing. Keep those coming.
What stain?
That's a unique look. I think the amount of yellow was good.
Big D is like the Bob Ross of guitars. I love these videos..
You keep giving me ideas . Thank you for years of your videos . I just got a guitar kit and I am planning to do a fire dragon theme with Angelus dyes for it and a decal on the head stock. Again ,Many thanks to all of the videos you produced. Your awesome 👍😎
