All the Details of the Remote Arctic River I'll Be Exploring by Canoe, Alone
This video covers all the details and preparations for a long solo trip in the Arctic that I'm starting today! After 30 hours of driving and a 2 hour bush plane flight to Nueltin Lake I'll be heading north of the treeline direct into the Barren Lands of the Arctic.
Once there, I'll be completely alone and out of touch for 30 days. The only written description of the river is a few pages in a book written by a missionary in the late 1800's.
The trip spans the Thlewiaza, The-Tinne, Kognak and Tha-Anne rivers and will probably include caribou and bear encounters, whitewater and giant ice-covered lakes, and insanely complex navigational challenges.
Once the trip is underway, I'll be sharing a few photos from the field a small satellite device So if you're interested in adventure and how well jiu-jitsu works against giant Hudson Bay Polar Bears then follow along!
The best place to stay current is probably on Instagram ( essentialwilderness), although this page on Essential Wilderness (tinyurl.com/nunavutsolo) should have a map that updates with my location once I'm on the water
Pictures from this trip will also get cross-posted on

I'll be back to the world in late July. Hopefully!

    According to my grade 9 basic math class that I barely passed, if I carry both a gun and bear spray, I have a 170% chance of stopping the bear. 😁

    One thing I almost guarantee guarantee no study would reflect is (1) whether the firearm was immediately accessible, (2) whether the person was even moderately proficient with the firearm, (3) their hit rate during the encounter. I almost guarantee that a lot of people carrying handguns while hiking put them in a backpack, or somewhere else that's not immediately accessible. If it's not immediately accessible it's essentially useless for self defense.

    Im not sure why people argue over this. Just use both! Im a gun guy and wount not every say a gun is ALWAYS the best defense.

    Just recently went through a bear education course , im live in Montana, by the fish and wild life guys. There data showed that using a weapon is futile becuase hitting a bear in a vital are that stops them is like hitting a bouncing football. Whereas bear spray should be the first defence with a weapon if needed. In very rare instances, bears pish theough the spray, normally due ro poor aim or wind issues.

    @KMLang007 Před 14 hodinami

    Honestly, bear spray is more likely to be used because of its non-lethal nature than a gun. Not to mention the more involved nature of weapons training vs spraying a hairspray aerosol can. So, I believe there is a skewed comparison.

    As an Alaskan , I'd rather have both bear spray AND a gun . Winds in Alaska can make using bear spray difficult because sometimes you can't use the spray because the wind is coming towards you from the bear's direction .

    😅 well I have been hiking the mountains in bear country for 40 years.If you rather have bear spray in bear country good for you.But I have seen what they do to people. The wind could be blowing in your direction 😅. And you become food.I will keep my 10 mm and 12ga.

    Bear Spray is a scam. I am a dealer and saying that. The weakest link is the nozzle, it does not spray/aim. I tried them all. I could not even get a racoon on a picnic table. It is a scam. Sorry, but true. I will do a video on this.

    1) Why would you shoot at the bear when it's 20 feet away? I have always heard that the number 1 problem with shooting a bear is that people start shooting when it's too far away. 2) Why do we have all these CZcams videos making fun of people who died trying bear spray? Maybe the problem isn't that guns don't work, maybe the problem is people don't train properly with guns. And why would I risk being blind AND being mauled at the same time?

    I just described. I Found you by your video on how to sit in a canoe. You seem to have a lot of experience. I have a question for you. Which canoe is cheap and stable? We are planning to buy one, and it would be for three people myself, my husband, and our toddler and we don't want to end up in the water. We were planning to buy the Pelican AAA15P406 3-Person Canoe, Green, 15.5-ft, it's a plastic one, but the reviews say that some people have been canoeing for 45 years, and somehow they always end up in the water. That made us not buy it, which canoe would you recommend? What are your thoughts on the Pelican canoe? We understand that we can end up in the water regardless, however, if we can reduce the chances, we will do it. Stability is a must for us, followed by price and that it can take a beating. Thanks in advance.

    Total trash, Facts. Bear spray only works when the bear is not truly committed. bluff charge, startle or fear advancment. i.e. cases where the bear was not going to full-on attack anyway. This is where bear spray works. However, if a bear black or brown flips the switch and is now focused on you for food or territorial or cubs. The gun is your only hope. you could put that entire can on the bear and it would run right through it and not stop until you are stopped. This is reality. The good news, the majority of bear encounters are cases were the bear is not committed. Again bear spray only works in cases when the bear is not fully committed to the attack.

    Wish more people were data focused and open minded. I’ve changed my outlook on different things in my life more than a few times. It’s when somebody ignores everything that doesn’t fit their narrative or opinion that they start being dangerously stupid. But on the specific topic- anecdotally in my life experience of seeing videos of bear attacks etc- i noticed I always wonder (did they hit it with a bullet?) because bears seem to often charge thru a gunshot and go nuts. I’ve only seen a few clips of bear spray but they dropped or turned those bears around *instantly* both times. That was something I had never seen. Bear spray works better on bears than it does on humans 😂

    That is a very sensible kit you have there ! Focus an treatment of realistic and frequent injuries and conditions that are small but dangerous if not treated well. Instead of carrying battle style med kits for a gunshot wound that is highly unlikely and if so probably deadly out there anyway. Very efficient setup - I like it, especially the antibiotics selection. I say that as a senior emergency MD.

      @williamcook9936 Před 6 dny

      A bear has no emotional desire to kill you like a person does. It’s a predator so that strong pain and trouble breathing from the bear spray will make it flee the area because if it can’t see or is injured it can’t hunt and it dies. Predators heavily avoid injury and big fights if they can help it.

    • @squidlybytes
      @squidlybytes Před 6 dny

      What Wiliam said-the pepper spray isn't supposed to hard-stop a bear. Nothing you can comfortably carry will reliably hard stop a bear in one shot. What it does is startle it. Most predators have an immediate flee response to surprise, because if the prey does something unexpected that *could* hurt them, it's not worth the chance. If they're *already wounded*, now there's nothing to loose.

    For me it’s bear spray all the way. Not because I am against people using a gun. For one I don’t have the skill set to use a gun. Second if I fly into BC for a hiking trip on an I ever going to get a firearm. If I lived in Alaska I would more than likely have both. Where I live we only have black bears and they are not much of an issue. If I lived in say Montana or Wyoming again I would also carry both.
