Charlie Christian was a key figure in the development of the guitar in the 20th century, however it was Lonnie Johnson born Febuary 8th, 1899, not Charlie Christian, who first influence the single note solo style playing that we hear today in Jazz, Pop, Country, Folk, Soul and Rock music. Johnson is often categorized as a blues Musician, but he was a lot more then that.

He and Jack Teagarden are my favorite bone player ever his solos are breathtaking. For me the mark of a virtuoso is they look at the standard limitations of their instruments and pay them no mind. They take their instruments to new level for standards of excellence. Jack Teagarden Sidney Bichet Pops Armstrong Dizzy Miles Aretha Howard Levy Wynton Sarah Vaughn Ella Chet Baker Raphael Mendez could play ever style and player a complicated classical piece while rotating his trumpet 360 degrees really complicated fingerings while rotating his horn all of them and so many more come to mind as true virtuoso’s. They can play or sing any style of music and it is at a level that few ever reach. Thanks for the tragic story of one the greatest ever.

A couple of things that came to my mind: The stories and accounts of men showing up for important, often pivotal, meetings with others but wearing an ill fitting suit, or an old suit long out of fashion, or a loud suit where a conservative look is needed are striking in their simultaneous mix of pain and hilarity. Perhaps I'm missing something. Rose Room was a well established standard by the time of Hammond's engineered "performance audition" of Christian for Goodman's band. Why on earth would Benny Goodman think that Christian wouldn't know Rose Room? Reinhardt and Grappelli's incredibly beautiful and swinging version had already come out by 1937; it's a safe bet to think that Christian had heard it and loved it. Thanks for the video.

It seems entertainment has always been dangerous because they mostly own and run it for personal gain still to this day. Writers get nothing, performers get enough to have to keep performing like a whale. All the owners didn't create but they own the copyrights. How did artist do this to themselves by being so hippy saying things like it is just creative expression. Targets for exploitation.
