When I studied Jazz History in college the teacher would break down Jazz into different categories: Big Band, Bebop, “Free" Jazz, etc. Art Tatum, alone, had his own category. It was "Art Tatum Style." He was a truly singular, near inhuman talent. He had no peers. It’s spooky how good he was.

The magic began for me at age 16 when I borrowed 'The Art of Tatum' from my local library in the mid-70s in London, England where I was born and raised, Saw it for months before I finally gave it a try. Up until that point I was into Joplin and Ragtime, then people like Fats Waller but I was always looking for something different. Got the album home and skipped through 'Elegy' and Humoreque' then on the third track, I heard the opening strains of his 1939 version of 'Sweet Lorraine'. Completely changed my life. I've heard SL so many times in the intervening decades and to this day it nd so many of his solos never gets tired. H died two years before I was born. Oscar Peterson was the most accomplished and polished of all my piano heroes but Arthur Tatum was/is an absolutely unparalleled phenomenon doing what he did back then, an artist without whom in my humble opinion, there would be no OP. or many of my other heroes .God bless Maestro Tatum's soul

if you transcribe his improvisations and analyse them you see how elementary were tha majority of classic composers. Let aside the steady beat , the speed the huge hands and the fact that he was a self made musician. In fact Horowitz Toscanini Rubinstein realised how incredible he was.
He plays tons of notes ,many unnecessary, but that was the way to impress the mass. And if you analyse slowly ,like Charlie Parker all what he plays is mentally controlled.Even at incredible speed.
A real monster .You may not like his stylistic choises but you must admit he was a superior homo sapiens , even harmonically he was a real innovator.
Solo piano he is the goat.

Great, no doubt but what about Erroll Garner? Tatum, on his deathbed, when asked about who could replace him, he is reported to reply “ watch out for the little man”.

Amazing that you could talk for 15 minutes about the music of Art Tatum without playing one note of his music. Instead of this smooth jazz background music which has nothing to do with Tatum's genre, you could have used his music.

@@onetrackjazz But a terrific montage of photographs and presentation of biographical information. Thank you. Those who already know Tatum, now go play some of your favorite Tatum. Those who don't know Tatum -- what are you waiting for?? Get going!!!
Besides solo and trio recordings, for those who may want to hear some horn with the piano, I'll recommend what is my favorite of his group masterpieces sessions: Ben Webster and Art Tatum. You get Tatum and my favorite ballad player, Webster, pulling off some great renditions of standards. It's been said of Tatum that horn players got in his way, but to these ears he and tenor saxophonist Webster seemed to make the pairing work out just fine. The session is a great introduction to both if you're familiar with neither, and a great intro to the one you don't know, if you're only familiar with one of the two. Fans of both, I'm sure, know this recording very well.

The greatest instrumentalist, in any category? No he wasn't! Ha was fantastic, and I love listening to him, but history has come up with many, many great instrumentalists, from Liszt to Heifitz who could match him. That doesn't denigrate him in the slightest.
