  • Like Fats Navarro and Charlie Parker before him, Sonny Clark’s life was short but it burned with musical intensity. Influenced deeply by Bud Powell, Clark nonetheless developed an intricate and hard-swinging harmonic sensibility that was full of nuance and detail. Regarded as the quintessential hard bop pianist, Clark never got his due before he passed away in 1963, despite the fact that it can be argued that he never played a bad recording date either as a sideman or as a leader.

Sonny Clark's bluenote recoding are some of the best in the whole catalog!

Thanks, Robert, for filling me in on a favorite artist who’d always been a mystery. What the purveyors of heroin did to the black & jazz communities was SO f-ng evil!
A couple of my all-time favorites are Speak Low on Sonny’s Crib and Cheese Cake on Go.

He was soulful and a beautiful pianist. Warmth and an atmosphere that surrounded the tune. Check out Leapin' and Lopin', a 1961 Blue Note with a great front line comprising Tommy Turrentine and Charlie Rouse, with a sublime rendition of Deep in a Dream, in 4tet with Ike Quebec on tenor. Billy Higgins, the magician, on drums of course, and wonderfully rhythmic and melodic compositions. For me one of the most beautifully sounding recordings of any era and his best.

Thank you so much for these cherished biographies on some of the jazz world's most gifted and, for some, overlooked musicians. This is such an important platform for their
intriguing stories. I appreciate and look forward to each one ( I really enjoyed the profile that you shared on Mr. Eric Dolphy)! Thank you for this illuminating segment. He was certainly deserving of wider recognition, as is the case for many of jazz's heroes and heroines. Blessings to you and all. Rest in heavenly peace, Mr. Sonny Clark.🙏🏿🎹

He was a real treasure. I first heard him playing with Grant Green & amazed by what he did on the keyboard. I have since collected his Blue Note albums & they're some of My favorites.

Great video. Sonny’s contribution to the world of music is sadly overlooked. Just a few of the albums that Sonny contributed to that were not mentioned in this video:
    Dexter Gordon’s A Swingin’ Affair
    Grant Green’s Nigeria
    Jackie McLean’s A Fickle Sonance
    Lee Morgan’s Candy
    Lou Donaldson’s Lou Takes Off
    Louis Smith’s Smithville
    Johnny Griffin’s The Congregation
I’ve an iTunes playlist of Sonny as a leader and sideman that is over 27 hours long.

I liked it, as I do all your profiles, but was it really necessary to lead off with his death and addiction?
