  • Artist were, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans. Out of the thousands of jazz albums ever recorded, why does "Kind of Blue" maintain its hold on our imaginations more than any other? Songs on the album are "blue in green," "so what," "all blues," "freddie freeloader," and "flamenco sketches."

in my opinion - the fact that drummer Jimmy Cobb laid back, and didn’t ruin the music by over-playing, is a huge part of why this album is accessible to non-jazzers.

Totally agree. I first heard the album in 1974 as a HS senior in a music appreciation class (typical senior year fluff course, but for me life changing!), and when I heard JC play that was it for rock and the start of a very long jazz road.

You're "miles" ahead of me. I graduated in 1974 as well, yet this is new to me. Enthralled is an understatement on how I feel about KOB.

Yup. At 1:32 on So What, when JC hits his ride cymbal, everything changed. Jazz and music for that matter, would never be the same. Perfection.

This is the magic of arts:sometimes ,risks are rewarded and you succeed to create pure beauty. There is not one simple explanation:it needs a lot of factors to contribute:good artists, good ideas and a lot of CHANCE....Thanks for showcasing so nicely the beauty of jazz!

A rocker at the time, I saw Mingus at Ronnie Scott's in 1970 and later that summer saw Miles and the Bitches Brew band at the Isle of Wight. After that I wasn't a rocker anymore. Excellent video.

When I saw Miles during his comeback tour, his back was to the audience, and he played four notes during the entire concert. When I listen to "Kind of Blue", I hear none of that. Joni Mitchell once said something about not wanting to paint another starry night again, so I am willing to take what I am offered.

The fact that this album was (despite the occasional Coltrane outburst of notes) quite the opposite of the Ornette Coleman album certainly didn’t hurt. It produced three essential pieces of the jazz canon, and the remainder certainly is not mere filler.

This is very unusual. It's not only the best-selling jazz album, it's also the very best album in the history of jazz. It is unusual that the general record-buying public would prefer an artistically important album to just some easy popular stuff. That is normally not the case.

Players at their top playing unselfish and not to impress. Modal. No strange harmony just to impress that you can play over it. Cobb and Chamber just perfect. The record sound soo good because of the musicians. Non Jazzlistners just go for, does it sound good?. Yes it does.

"so what" was one of the songs on "kind of blue," so it was more like after "kind of blue" they all did their own thing

Gils involvement with miles was both before and after . Starting with Birth of the cool . But if you listen to Miles ahead which is one of my favourites or sketches of Spain and Porgy and Bess.
      Great records
