Solar + Batteries + EV Charger Transformed This Home (Feed-In Tariffs are Dead & This Proves It)
Yep, solar feed-in tariffs are almost worth nothing these days, which is why this customer is focussed on fully leveraging self-consumption through automation. This homeowner recognises that maximising solar self-consumption yields a significantly higher return on investment compared to exporting surplus energy to the grid.
The homeowner of this large property in North Brisbane reached out to our solar energy specialists to design a comprehensive solar and battery system to make this happen.
The customer wished to achieve the following:
✔️ Produce as much solar energy as possible from the roof space he had available
✔️ Store excess solar energy in batteries for overnight usage
✔️ Have protection from power outages with a large battery system
✔️ Charge his EV from solar
✔️ Have full control over the allocation of solar to the home, batteries, and EV charger
✔️ Comprehensive and high-level data monitoring
✔️ Remain as independent from the grid as possible without switching off-grid
✔️ Maximise solar self-consumption
What did we install?

Will the generator charge the Tesla Powerwalls when they get too low? Or will the Powerwalls only be able to charge from the Solar system
Thank you for this video. I had no idea how to connect my Sungrow system to wi-fi until I watched this video.
We're glad it helped :)
The roof can take more solar panels.... to add more inverters and batteries for more autonomy days ; less use of liquid fuels
Don't go off-grid with selectronic, worst decision I ever made.
Fail! 2 to 1 ratio people. For every 1 amp of batyery power you nerd 2W of solar input.
When installing 3 Tesla powerwalls into a three phase home with three phase inverter have you found that when mains is disconnected - the system keeps running all phases with solar and battery drive, with total sync only when the three phase inverter is driving .. outside this condition then each phase can only drive single phase circuits as sync is dropped.. currently try to work a full time 3 phase sync with more equipment
How much did that system cost
Just found your channel whats the best electricity provider in Brisbane
Why are the panels only produce 30amps at 600w? That seems very low to me. Also you should aim for a minimum of 80amps from the panel's to be sufficient with this set up. And the solar charger should provide maximum amps when the AC load is on, not when the battery level falls too low. I can help with this stuff.
Finally! Thanks
😄
Thank you. Very helpful.
Happy to have helped 😊
Thank you. This explanation actually made sense.
Happy to have helped! 😊
come on here is a challenge to beat this, 2x selectronic systems 1 feeds the other as if its looking like a grid feed, Running maximum 240kw inverting power on both systems i.e.12x SPLC1202 with 2 x aerl SRX-R 600/30-120(8kw solar per splc1202 )(96kw per system)inverter then 2 x Fronius GEN24 Primo Solar Inverters per splc1202(20kw per splc1202)(240kw of ac solar) plus 20x power plus energy PIR20C with 400 x LiFe12033P (20*66kwh=1320kwh) all this to feed a small remote town of about 200 homes plus 1 community transport E-bus (25seater) and a 2x DC fast chargers (150kw+) designed as a micro grid to dispose of a GAS/diesel powered generators. SOUND LIKE CHALLENGE TO BUILD?
What's he running a Bitcoin mining farm 😂 so much power
Hi, will the 5G wifi work for this?
Thanks for the question, the Sungrow WiNet Configuration WiFi setup says, "Please be aware of the WiNet dongle only compatible with 2.4G signal. For example, make sure the mobile is connected with Telstra0592 instead of Telstra0592-5G". Hope that helps.
Damm this set up look expensive 😅
How does this set up comply with standards of not having lithium battery’s not sealed and vented from habitable areas ? Confused
I believe those laws are not retroactively enforced. So any solar system before that came into law is not effected and doesn't need to be changed. All future installs it does need to be adhered to, but existing setups are uneffected. I have not read the law, but informed post about it, best to confirm yourself, but from my understanding; it's correct.
Hi, this set up was installed before the new standards came into effect.
I noticed you had a Zappi EV charger. Does the powerwall recognise and 'speak' to this ?
Hi, thanks for the Q, yes, Zappi can talk to Powerwalls with the help of a 3rd party app like Charge HQ. We have a video on this here: czcams.com/video/e7oe6P5mM7E/video.html&ab_channel=SpringersSolar
If you do not want to worry about using the app, could I just remove the dongle since we're not using it? I don't actually have wifi in my house.
If you don't need/want to connect to Wifi, you can definitely feel free to go ahead and remove it ☺Put it in a drawer for safe-keeping.
In my caravan I can run my air conditioning with a 600ah lithium battery it draws around 100 amps I also have 2x inverters 150/70 amps each and 1600w solar on the ground producing 120 amps enough to keep the aircon going all day I also have another 600ah just to run my 12v system with another 900w solar and another 2x solar chargers to recharge the batteries
Sleeping on top of all that lithium power? No thank you lol
What are the two different type of solar panels on the roof, and how do they differ in performance?
What is the estimated price for this
Where are you
Hey David, we are based in Brisbane, Queensland.
What is the price installed
Gday Joe I have a solar edge system already and I just recieved an email with the option to upgrade for free to the new inverter. My questions are can I install 30kw of batterys on one inverter and what's the cost of a 10kw battery cheers
Hey there, thanks for the question. Yep, sure can and cost-wise, it's $10,950 for the first SolarEdge battery and $10,450 for subsequent batteries. Cheers!
What is the protection from lightning?
THANKS FOR VID. YOU DID NOT SAY HOW BIG THEIR SOLAR AND BATTERY SIZE IS.
The biggest question Aussie caravaners want to know is what off-grid system will run the aircon (cooling mode set at say 22-23deg in hot weather) when camped up in a non powered camp site. Aware of different draw loads from aircons but lets assume the aircon is not the latest technology type like the newer Dometic Harrier Lite or plus units. And the caravan is 19ft or less in size and not a modern composite made van buit instead alloy clad to keep it simple. Our caravan is a Coromal 18ft 2005 model with its original installed wall mount internal aircon control unit and the compressor mounted seperate inside a lower kitchen side cupboard in its own compartment vented to the external wall. Most people are referring to use at night when they want to sleep at confortable temp on still balmy warm nights
Thank you so much for explaining this. Really helpful. I've been scouring the internet for ages to try and find a straightforward explanation. Perfectly articulated. Well done
Was trying to get information about connecting the charger directly to the powerwall. Many homes like mine only have 100A service panels and have no space to add a 240V breaker. This is a huge issue. The only remedy seems to be to upgrade to a 200A panel which costs about $4000. Getting Tesla powerwall and solar installed next week and they won’t upgrade the panel as part of the install. Plugging a charger directly into the powerwall would be a perfect solution.
A couple of questions for you Eddie. We are now being hit with demand charges and it is supposedly the highest average 15mins usage between 4pm & 9pm for the month, what does this actually mean? ie. If I turn the air-conditioner off between 4:01pm - 4:14pm and the house hold usage is 0 after this (all month) because our battery is covering household usage will I be charged a fee for demand or do they average it over that 15 mins? Also we are being charged a daily metering fee and we get billed monthly but the demand charge is only billed to us on every second bill, so no demand one month but then last months and current months on the next bill, is this normal? Finally and this may be something you can answer in one of your up coming vid's, can we program our Tesla Powerwall to be fully charged at 4pm even if it has to charge from the grid and then at 4pm the house switches to being powered by the battery? Currently we have to do this via the Tesla app and some times we miss it or we can't connect to the app if the weather is bad or internet is down. And 1 extra question, that I just thought of, we have Solar hot water and it is backed up by mains if there has not been enough sun on the roof during the day, this seems to kick in just after 4pm some days especially during Winter and can add to the demand usage if we don't catch it and it runs the battery dry before 9pm, can we install something that limits the hot water system to not draw power from the grid between 4pm & 9pm and if it has to it can automatically charge after 9pm? Enjoying the series, you are doing a great job as always!
Hey, thanks for watching! Some good questions there. 1. If your demand charge is the highest average 15mins usage for that peak period (4-9pm), then yes, your monthly demand charge will be multiplied by your kW usage across that 15-minute period where you drew the most electricity from the grid. If your battery is covering the loads during this period though and you draw 0kW from the grid, then your demand charge will be very low to none. 2. A daily metering fee is normal. Normally demand charge is billed quarterly so I am unsure what they are doing here. 3. Yes, you can program your Tesla Powerwall from the app to reach 100% reserve capacity by a specified time every day. You can do this in the settings of the Tesla App. Settings -> Powerwall -> Time-Based Control. This will discharge your battery in peak periods and charge it back up with excess solar and low-cost energy from the grid at any other time of day. We have a Tesla App guide here: czcams.com/video/gr4wFJj42dM/video.html 4. For your hot water system, it sounds like you'd benefit from a simple timer installed in the switchboard with a contactor to control the hot water. These analogue timers can be set so no power can go to the hot water system between 4-9pm. Outside of these times, it will run and can be overridden if you really need the hot water during the peak period. Hope this helps. If you're in SE QLD, we'd be happy to take a look at your bill and provide some more guidance. Cheers, Eddie Springer
Can the powerwall 2 be force charged using storm watch for a system that will not be able to fill the battery in winter using a tou tariff
Hi, thanks for the question. Yes, you can lift the reserve capacity to 100% at any time and your battery will force charge from the grid. This is available to homeowners. Hope this helps!
Nice job. Springers leading the way as normal.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed.
What does a system like this cost ?
+1 to this comment. Would love to know a rough indicative price this full system came to.
I cant get into the system. Can you make a video for setting up a new service?
Hey, thanks for watching! Sure, we'll see what we can do. Your installer should have helped set your app up for you - if not, it may be worth giving them a call. Otherwise, Tesla's website has some good information that you can follow too, see here: www.tesla.com/en_au/support/energy/powerwall/mobile-app/tesla-app-for-energy
@springers nope they didn't do much of anything besides take my money. I've been on tesla's site my problem is there isn't any stickered information like a password or serial number on my batteries so I can't start the process.

Very good information.
Glad you took something from it, thanks :)
Is there a difference between RV Solar panels and home domestic panels? These days a single home domestic panel can be spec’d up to 440watts. The RV panels don’t seem rated the same.
Hey, thanks for the Q. Yes, domestic solar panels are usually much larger physically and are a higher voltage. Although they can produce awesome results, they are often not warranted for mobile applications.

Looks like a great system .. Another question ..Whats the no cost solar companies advertise ? Does that actually exist in Queensland ?
It's leasing basically. Although some people are strongly against it, if you do the math yourself you can figure out if the cost are worth it. Usually they have a escalation ladder so you pay more later on. Also breaking the lease typically means you have to pay full MSRP upfront and is typically extremely disadvantageous. For example, selling your home you might have to buyout the lease, or convince the buyer to take it on if permissible. That said, its a financial instrument, solar companies use it to allow more sales and consumers use it because of convenience and they probably still save money over time. Have to decide whether the pros are worth the cons.
