Making Surfboard Fins from a Cracked Log
These might be my favourite fins I've made! I made them from a cracked maple log that I filled with black epoxy. To fill the cracks I made a mold that I then poured black epoxy into, similar to how epoxy river tables are made. For these surfboard fins I wanted to use up the fibreglass tabs I had made in a previous fin video. The fibreglass tabs are made with 36 layers of 6oz fibreglass and epoxy.

      Depending on the lens you want to add it could work without as much modding. Lenses with longer flange distances than the m12 lenses would be easier to adapt. Big thing is finding a lens with an Ir filter or finding a separate ir filter for the lens.

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters Před 4 měsíci

      When I started making fins years before I started the channel I used roving a lot. Some of my best fins used it but I always found it hit or miss. I think its because I was using slow set epoxy it would shift a little or cause the glass to bubble. I found it worked best glassing one side of the fin then the other. Once I got into vacuum bagging even with this crude setup. I found I was getting better results glassing both side of the fin at once without roving. It also cut glassing and sanding time in half with better results aside from some leading edge bubbles. I've been experimenting with resin infusion which may be an even better option.

    I have this type of little zoom lens but couldn't get it to work on an SJcam 4000, just get a blurry mess, maybe I'm getting the distance from the sensor wrong. • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters Před 6 měsíci

On mine there is a little bit when all the way zoomed in that doesn't focus. Have you tried any other lenses?

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters Před 8 měsíci

      The tab is warped in glass but the part that sticks out on the end would be too weak to just be wood wrapped in glass. Adding more fiberglass there makes it stronger. Yeah its getting too cold for a 4/3 now, I was talking to someone else that tried a new 4/3 and they didn't last long either. Its great you extending your season, are you going to try to surf through the winter or are you stopping till the spring? I've been out a few times, we just had some decent swell pass through that I've been testing a set of fins on. Hopefully we get some more soon before the real winter temps set in.

      @@WaveWasters Hiya Matt, if I get another sesh in that will probably be it for me this season with the gear that I presently have. Sorry I didn’t get up your way this season. Goals for next year I guess. 😎 Cheers, John

      @@funafter5081 That's fair winter's not fun if you don't have the right gear. A lot of my gear is getting old but hoping to make it through the winter. Hopefully next year I'll be able to make it down to your area some.

      @@WaveWasters I was just talking to a surfer from the south shore and he tells me he has a Patagonia wetsuit that he can't even wear until February because he gets too hot in it up to that point. So, I guess you're right, having the right gear can make all the difference. Stay frosty! ( if you know what that means... ) Cheers, John

    Just saw your green board. I have a bought, but not yet ridden, a similar shape. Supposed to be the fastest board for a heavier surfer. Check out ETC Surfboards Unicorn. There is a website and some CZcams videos.

    hey question, why even do 2 pieces if you don‘t put a stringer in it? wouldnt it be easier to just cut out 1 piece?

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters Před 8 měsíci

      Mainly it was cheaper then buying a 2 foot wide chuck of foam this big as at the time it was I think a standard size they cut. It's also easier to move around two 4'x8'x1' sheets than one big 2 foot wide sheet.

    You should try an old fridge door... it's like a finless mini simmons 😅 You know the ones with rounded edges. I did it and was very surprised

      It's on my list hahaha, so is a cooler lid but they are hard to find. I want to revisit the door again if I can find a couple more.

      What size fridge door did you surf and were you able to 360 it?

    • @danielbarbieri8199
      @danielbarbieri8199 Před 8 měsíci

      @@WaveWasters I don't remember exactly the size, but it was like 5'2" x 24" wide. 360... I didn't try, I'm not a good surfer, it was a bet with a friend years ago. At this time I was surfing with SUP only, the challenge was to take off and pop up. I did 180 accidentaly, I imagine that 360 will be easy for you.

      @@danielbarbieri8199 That's sounds like a really fun size! If you got to your feet and went a little ways I bet after a few sessions you could get it. Still super cool to hear about someone surfing a fridge door. Hopefully I'll come across one in my search.

      I have lots of short and small fins this gives a completely different feeling. It's really hard to explain, they also don't feel super draggy. They are weirdly fun though.

      @@WaveWasters well... anyway I like very much the crazy things you do. It reminds me of my youth 😄 Actually I'm planning to make a wooden surfboard. But it's hard to find balsa beams. I would like to start from beams and chamber them. But I guess it will end with a paulownia hollow thing...
