  • Fin keys are a great way to use up scrap surfboard resin so it doesn't go to waste. Its also a fun resin project that you can give away to friends or sell. To make these fin keys, all you need are some small silicone jewellery molds and some 3/32 hex keys.

I have another project in the works I like better than these, but this one has very little waste.

I make coasters with leftover resin

Coaster would look awesome too! My next video is another resin project but it's wood turning based. Lots of options for scrap for resin.

Thanks for sharing. I like this idea a lot. I usually pour my excess into a useless silicone mold I made (pineapple shape), but now I have a bunch of useless pineapples of various colors. Think I'll start making something useful like your fun key idea.

So many people are into making resin projects that you can get molds for everything now. Lots of options for cool projects.

@@WaveWasters definitely. Also just realized my pineapples are the perfect size for gear shift knobs, so going to go get a tap set now.
Any thought on making a fin mold for excess resin pours? I am guessing you'd want fiberglass in it, but multiple pours in it might have whicking issues and/or bondline adhesion issues if you do multiple small pours with leftover resin to fill it.

@@callalilycollective that would be a cool gear shift knob! You could make a decorative fin for a wall but with out glass it would break. You would be better making a fiberglass fin panel one layer at a time if your using a epoxy. Then sand with 80grit before each layer so it bonds with the next.

Josh Martin makes really cool gearshift knobs. Check them out. 🤙🏼

@@allsurf thanks I’ll check them out.
I actually just posted a new video on restoring my VW bus and made a gear shifter in it. Turns out polyester resin does not like getting tapped. It worked, but think I will drill out and bond in a nut next time, instead of straight tapping.
