A Prototype Slant Windshield Pickup? The Prototype Model A Ford Deluxe Delivery Truck of 1931
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed 14 dny
Two grainy photographs. That's all we have to go by when talking about this curiosity of the Model A's. What we do know is that in March of 1931 two St. Louis, MO newspapers published very short pieces on this supposed new offering in the Ford commercial line. Was it a prototype? Maybe a pre-cursor to the Deluxe Pickup? A custom one-off done by a Ford dealer trying to attract attention? We may ...

I'm a ToolMaker by trade, from Birmingham England. If fastinates me to watch this video, the way they make the cranks and the grinder that does all the journals in one hit is a stunningly clever piece of not only engineering but mass production. I take my hat off to Ford and their engineers. The Doco on the development of the flathead v8 is also worth watching as it cronicles how Henry Ford side stepped the Engineers who were adamant that a single v8 block could not be done in a way as to mass produce it. Ford setup a makeshift design studio in his mates workshop ( None other than Thomas Edison ), and they came up with a block that could be mass produced, and the flathead v8 was born, the rest is history as they say.

This is a fascinating video clip on how wire wheels were made! In the early 1920s wire wheels were a rare feature only found on very expensive custom cars. Spoke wheels made with hickory wood were phased out in the late 1920s. Steel wheels without spokes became mainstream later in the mid-1930s and were cheaper to produce.

Another great video. In 1984, I worked for a glass and upholstery shop. The original owner came by. He was in his mid-80s. He said he moved to town in the early 20s. Every car in town had at least one broken window, as there were all single pane plate glass. He charged $2.00 to replace a window, the bulk glass brought in by rail. I can't imagine driving on rough dirt roads with plate glass.

GM was doing the same thing with its' "model names" at that time. Ads would only call it "Chevrolet" or "The New Chevrolet", the only place on the car itself a model name would appear would be on the firewall plate, and it'd be in the parts and service books. It wasn't a part of a car's marketing identity, just a way to disambiguate from earlier and later models in the shop. That started to change when Chevy went to the Standard and Master models and Ford started putting more differences than just trim to the Standard and DeLuxe lines in the mid '30s but it wouldn't be until the '80s that the full-size cars fully stopped using a different model name for each trim level.

This phenomenon of celebs wanting to be seen in and around a "regular" car has repeated itself a few times, probably most recently with the 2nd and 3rd gen Prius. Automakers sponsoring them is another thing entirely of course, as is stars having such a car to drive when they *don't* want to be seen or hanging on to one for sentimental reasons toward that particular car (like Christian Bale's Toyota pickup).

I don't like the slants as the cars header looks like it's missing the visor with the way the top edge still has a lip tor the visor. If it was smoothed and rounded, I'm sure it would have looked much better and intentional instead of the car missing a part. If you have a straight windshield like I do, just open the windshield out a tiny bit and the light bouncing problem is solved.
