Troll contestants are a lot less of a thing these last years. The US could join but that's no guarantee for a win and there are only 3 short ad breaks in a 4 hour show which is an issue in the US. Countries that like each other do vote for each other but that's more of a cultural affiliation thing than politics. Some languages do not sound very musical so in that case English is a better choice. Overall it's just fun to watch especially with a bunch of friends because it's so eclectic... the voting is sometimes even more fun to watch than the performances... very uniquely European going live to every country for their results. It's a combination of national pride, politics and actual music in a light-hearted way.
