  • Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport popular in many countries, often referred to as "the gentlemen's game." Just like baseball, it involves two teams taking turns to bat and field, with the objective of scoring runs while trying to dismiss the opposition. However, there are several key differences that make cricket a unique and captivating sport.
In cricket, each team has 11 players, and the game is typically played in two innings. During the batting team's turn, one player from the opposing team (the bowler) delivers the ball to the batsman, who attempts to hit it and score runs by running back and forth between two sets of stumps. Unlike baseball, where bases are used, in cricket, the batsmen run on a straight pitch between wickets.
Similarly to baseball, the fielding team aims to get the batsmen out. In cricket, a wicket can be taken in various ways, such as getting the batsman bowled (hitting the stumps with the ball), caught by a fielder, or leg before wicket (LBW) if the ball would have hit the stumps but was obstructed by the batsman's leg.
One significant difference is that cricket doesn't have a fixed number of innings. Instead, it continues until a predetermined number of overs (a set of six deliveries by a bowler) are bowled, or all batsmen are dismissed. Matches can last for several hours or even days in the case of Test cricket, making it a more strategic and patient game than baseball.
Additionally, cricket fields are much larger than baseball diamonds, and the playing area is circular. The bowler can deliver the ball overhand or underhand, unlike baseball's strict overhand pitching. Moreover, cricket allows for multiple bowlers to take turns during an inning, adding variety and tactics to the game.
Overall, cricket shares similarities with baseball in terms of the bat-and-ball nature and the objective of scoring runs while dismissing opponents. However, its distinct rules, formats, and playing style make it a captivating and beloved sport in its own right, capturing the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.
Top 10 cricket players from various countries were widely regarded as follows:
    1) Virat Kohli (India) - One of the greatest batsmen in modern cricket and former captain of the Indian cricket team.
    2) Kane Williamson (New Zealand) - New Zealand's captain and a technically skilled batsman known for his elegant style.
    3) Joe Root (England) - England's captain and a prolific batsman with an excellent technique.
    4) Steve Smith (Australia) - One of Australia's finest batsmen with unorthodox but effective stroke play.
    5) Babar Azam (Pakistan) - Pakistan's captain and an elegant batsman with exceptional timing and footwork.
    6) David Warner (Australia) - An aggressive Australian opener known for his power-hitting.
    7) Jasprit Bumrah (India) - India's fast-bowling sensation, known for his deadly yorkers and pace.
    8) Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) - A South African fast bowler with raw pace and excellent skills.
    9) Trent Boult (New Zealand) - A left-arm swing bowler from New Zealand, known for his precision.
    10) Ben Stokes (England) - An all-rounder from England, known for his powerful hitting and valuable contributions with both bat and ball.
Widely considered some of the best Cricket players.

The biggest events in the cricket calendar are (hopefully not too controversially):
Cricket world cup: This is a one day format (each team get 50 overs) tournament. Played every 4 years with the men's competition later this year and the women's competition happened last year.
T20 world cup: Twenty20 format tournament played every 2 years. Both men's and women's due to be played next year.
IPL: The Indian Premier League. This is the premier T20 franchise tournament that takes place every year. It's comfortably the richest cricket tournament in the world and draws the top players from around the world. India is probably the most obsessed with cricket of any nation and the spectacle of the IPL shows it. Other T20 franchises include (but aren't limited to) the "Big Bash" (Australia), "T20 Blast" (England), "Pakistan Super League" (Pakistan), and most recently "Major League Cricket" (USA).
The Ashes: First conceived in 1882 when Australia beat England on English soil for the first time and Australian media wrote an obituary for English cricket, saying "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia". Since then, England and Australia have alternated tours to each other to play series' of Test matches (multi-day matches where teams bat 2 innings each) in order to win these "ashes". Often produces some of the best test cricket and sporting drama in the world. It's currently taking place in England with the 4th test of 5 in progress.

To deal with the question first, there are world cups for theT20 and One Day format. The next One Day format one will be held in India in the Autumn, and the next T20 one is next year, and is being held in the US and West Indies. There is also an attempt to launch "Major League Cricket" in the US this year, which has the Cricket For Americans channel rather excited! In regards to the Test format, I think it works in an ongoing ladder, so there is never a tournament per se, but there is usually some matches going on somewhere that has teams attempting to climb the rankings.
I'd say that before watching any games, it's probably worth finding a video about the different types of bowling as that is the starting point for any strategies the fielding team are using. It affects how the fields are placed, but there is also a question about when is the right time for a particular type of delivery. Sadly, I can't find a video that fits what I'm trying to recommend. Hopefully other commentors may be able to help

The biggest rivalries in cricket are India versus Pakistan and England versus Australia. the World Cups are different for different formats of the games. he ODIs have a 50 over each side game and the tournament is hosted every 4 years(current champions England) the T20 world Cup is 20 overs each side game which are originally scheduled for once in two years but are adjusted if two world cups align the same year(current champions Australia). the test matches include World Test Championships which is again a binary year contest between test playing nations where each series has 120 points and the best two teams after the WTC calender play the finals. Each World Cup have different Trophies and you can look up their significances. Ashes is going on right at this moment(the international series since 1854 the video was talking about) and you can catch up on the lore.

One of the cool things about the bowling attack in Cricket, the Wicket keeper doesnt tell the bowler what to do (while the catcher will often signal to the pitcher what pitch to throw in baseball.... at least that is what I have heard). So when the bowler smashes a pace delivery down the pitch at 90+mph and it lands in the safe hands of the keeper, the keeper had to react to that pitch as much as the batsman did. Neither of them knowing what delivery was coming out of the bowler until it left his hand.

The thing I recently learnt about cricket is when the LBW rule came into being - the earliest form of it seems to be from a 1774 change to the rules, and was probably introduced then to counteract the change int he way the game was played after the introduction of pads.
T20 is probably the easiest version of the sport to get into since it's the only one that's actually played over a sensible length of time for a sporting competition - 20 overs per inning. Six balls per over, one inning each. So 120 opportunities to score per side, each taking ~80 minutes so around 3 hours plus an interval. (It's also the version of the sport that would be most US television friendly, since you could probably fit a quick commercial between each over simply because the batters swap wickets and a new bowler comes to replace them but also general changes in strategies between overs.)
...just please don't pick a match that got interrupted by rain, no-one deserves their first exposure to an actual game to require understanding Duckworth-Lewis-Stern to know why the winning team won.

Just one inaccuracy - I think they said that once all the batters from a team are out then the other team has their turn at batting.... though there are 11 players, once 10 of them are out the innings is over. A lone batter cannot score runs as he has no partner to run in the opposite direction. Also, you don't HAVE to bat until you have lost 10 wickets. If a captain assesses that his team have scored enough runs then he can call an end to the innings by DECLARING. So, if a team is 456 for the loss of just six wickets (456-6), the captain, in declaring, effectively alters the score to 456 all out.

The traditional highest level of cricket is Test cricket. A test match is played (in white clothing) over five days (a day is three sessions each of two hours duration) between the top 'test qualified' international teams. In tests each team may bat through their whole order twice.
There are also shorter formats; ODIs in which an innings can last up to 50 overs (300 bowls) and there is also a 20 over per innings version. In the 50 over version there is a World Cup (first played 1975) tournament held every four years which is highly prized. The current holders since 2019 are England.
There is a more recent 20 over World cup staged every two years, that is also currently held by England.

There are three formats of cricket - first-class cricket (which takes several days for a match), limited-overs cricket ( with one-day internationals), which lasts 300 deliveries (i.e., bowls) per side, and takes about 7 hours, and T20, which lasts 120 deliveries per side and takes about 3 hours. If you're new to the sport, T20 is definitely the best way to go - though don't be surprised if you're lured into watching the longer versions! There are regular ODI and T20 world cups every four years and two years respectively. Even then the replacement ball is not a new ball but one that has had a similar amount of usage as the ball it is replacing. So nothing like a new ball every other pitch as in Baseball. This is important to understand as the condition of the ball, the amount of shine left on it, where the shine is on the ball, how proud the seam is standing, etc all effect how the ball interacts with the air as it is bowled to the batsman and the ground when it bounces. The only time a new ball replaces an old ball is in Test Cricket (the 5 day version) where a new ball may be taken by the bowling side after 80 overs... note... may be taken... they don't have to take it and may not depending on circumstance.

The tournaments of cricket are mainly hosted by ICC- International Cricket Council. There are 4 events hosted by ICC. Cricket World Cup ( It’s in the ODI format and a world cup happens every 4 years. The world cup is the most popular tournament in cricket and loved by fans. It’s happening this year too, in India.)
Champions Trophy ( It’s basically same as the world cup, it happens in every four years, well though the most recent Champions Trophy happened in 2017 and still not being held. ICC says it’s going to be held in 2025. And the Champions Trophy is also in the ODI format.)
T20 World Cup ( It’s in the T20 format, and really does not have a rule on when it’s going to be held. Sometimes it happens every year, somethings every 2 years etc. By the way, the 2024 T20 world cup is going to be held in the US. So check out one match out there if you get a chance.)
World Test Championship ( It’s in the Test format, it’s really good to watch, it happens in every 2 years. And that's basically it about World Test Championship. There was a World Test Championship held this year, India and Australia were in the finals and Australia won.)
ACC- Asian Cricket Council helds every asian event in the cricket world. They have only one event, which is the Asia Cup. It’s in 2 formats, T20 and ODI. It happening this year too. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan participate in this tournament. There is one team who enters the tournament from the Qualifier round. This year Nepal is qualifying, but usually it’s Hong Kong.
There's a test series between Australia and England called "The Ashes" held by England cricket board and Australia cricket board.
And there are bunch of Leagues in cricket. Here are some :
Indian Premier League ( IPL )
Pakistan Super League ( PSL )
Bangladesh Premier League ( BPL )
Big Bash League ( BBL )
    Vitality Blast
Carribean Premier League ( CPL )
Lanka Premier League ( LPL )
And there are always tournaments going on between 2 teams all around the world.
I hope this was enough information you needed about cricket 👍

The world cup of Cricket is the World Cup which comes in two flavours - 50 overs and 20 overs - but the 50-over men's version has been around since '75 and is the pinnacle.
Like the football world cup, countries bid to host but it's usually rotated around the continents evenly with Asia getting to host more because most of the full members are there and also that's where all the money is.
The absolute best game to watch for your first match has to be the 2019 World Cup Final. You couldn't possibly get a closer, see-sawing match ever. In fact, all World Cups are ruined now by how brilliantly it played out - and that's coming from a neutral's perspective.

There's also a version of the game with boring bits in it called Test Cricket which is also the purest and most loved version of the game. Everyone wears white and it's played for 7.5 hours a day over 5 days which means it's impossible to luck your way to victory and the team that plays the best always wins. It's only played competitively between a handful of countries for that reason, but when you get a good one, it's remembered for generations literally by the place name and year it happened (Calcutta '01, Edgbaston '05, Adelaide '93, Headingly '81 etc).

    • @colourandsound
      @colourandsound Před 10 měsíci +1

It’s the only international version where each team bats two innings, although confusingly, a team doesn’t need to bat all of their first (called a 'declaration') or even the second if they scored loads in the first, then can also ask the opposing team to bat their second innings directly after they finish their first (called a ‘follow on’) to finish the game off early. There’s also a thing called a draw where they run out of time (😅 I know) and nobody wins. Ties do happen but with all the big numbers and amount of innings to play it’s only happened twice.

One of things that bothers people who don't watch cricket or learn about it for the first time is the match time. Some people get blown away when they hear a Test match is 5 day long and so they almost lose interest. To be honest if you start watching Cricket with a Test match, you would not be doing justice to yourself.
There are two more versions. The One Day Internationals (ODIs) where every team gets to face a maximum of 300 legal deliveries (balls a bowler bowls) in groups of 6, called overs. It doesn't matter even if all the batters of the batting team are out or not. If your quota of 300 deliveries or 50 overs are over, your batting time is up and it's the opposition's turn to bat now with the same aim of scoring more runs than their opponent within 50 overs without losing all their wickets. On an average it takes 8-9 hours for a ODI game to finish (hence called 'one day' as it finishes in a day) if both the teams can bat the 100 overs.
Finally, there's the exciting T20 International format. The name of the format is self explanatory. T stands for Twenty and 20 means 20 😂. Hence called Twenty Twenty or in short T20 meaning both the teams can bat for a maximum of 20 overs or 20 x 6 = 120 deliveries. A team generally scores around 140-180 runs in 20 overs if they don't lose all of their wickets. Then their opponents have to chase that target down in 20 overs without losing all of their wickets. A T20 match is generally 3-4 hours long and is action packed most of the time and so it's becoming popular day by day.
Long-time cricket fans (including myself) are fans of Test Cricket because it's considered an art in cricket and of the highest prestige. But I wouldn't recommend you to start watching one just now or in near future. Start with a T20 match. Get to know rules of the game and the strategies and then move on to the other formats if you want to
And about the most glorious tournament in cricket, I'd say it's the ODI World Cup (it's like the FIFA world cup in the sense that it takes place after every 4 years in a different country than the previous year's). It's played by 10 countries now. But by 2027 there will be more teams. Some people say "The Ashes" is the most enjoyable tournament. But The Ashes is a 5 Test Match series and only played between two teams, namely, Australia and England. (Yes 5x5 = 25 days). So these 5 matches are played over the course of 45 to 50 days. But it's not ideal for you to start with The Ashes (since it's a test match format)
So, start with a T20 International match is all I can say. I'll leave a link here for you if I can!
    Edit: czcams.com/video/9lF4d4w84uM/video.html
Here! You can start with this T20 match between India and England, played back in 2014. It has almost all the elements you need to understand and it's also fun to watch. The commentary is good as well!

Although a "six" is arithmetically worth six runs it does not normally have the same significance as a 'home run'. A home run could win the game for team and an grand slam home run with all the bases loaded would almost always win a game but it is only four runs.
In a cricket match a 'top order' batsman who hits a six and then gets out has not done his job.

So a “World Cup” or “World Championship” is a competition that teams from ALL AROUND THE WORLD enter. There are international Word Cups, with nations playing versus nations. For instance England versus Australia. England will be made up of English players who play for non-national, or club, teams from anywhere, and Australia the same but with Australian players. Those Australian players may play club cricket in England, but they will play for Australia because of their nationality, with the best players of their nationality being picked to play for them. Then there are club world cups in which individual teams, not nations, take on other teams from around the world. Those teams would usually be the National Champions of the country they play in. These are rarer as they’re simply harder to set up, so usually World Cup means nation versus nation, and Club World Cup is for the other version, the latter version mentioned above.
In World Cups all nations will play each other, usually in group stages, like a mini league, and the countries who finish in the top positions of these mini leagues go through to the knockout stages, playing the winners of other groups/mini leagues, until they get to the quarter finals, then semi finals, and then the final. The final is then played and the winning team/nation is crowned WORLD CHAMPIONS.
Nobody is crowned a World Champion without playing in a competition that has involved the whole world.
A club team can’t win their National title and call themselves World Champions. They’d be National Champions or English Champions if it was an English team winning the English league comprised only of English teams. Even if that English team were the best in the world, they would still only be English Champions until they took part in a World Cup/Championship. The best in the world does not mean World Champions.
A good example would be the NFL, or NATIONAL Football League. The winner of the NFL, by way of winning the Super Bowl, become US Champions, or National Champions, probably just referred to as “The Champions” within the US. Super Bowl winners are likely the best team in the world, but they will NEVER be World Champions because they’ve only won the US league title.
This is all the same with pretty much every sport played around the world.
