  • The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey. Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.
Compared with previous coronations, the ceremony will undergo some alterations to represent multiple faiths, cultures, and communities across the United Kingdom, and will be shorter than his mother's coronation in 1953. The ceremony will begin with the anointing of Charles, symbolising his spiritual entry into kingship, and then his crowning and enthronement, representing his assumption of temporal powers and responsibilities. Camilla will be crowned in a shorter and simpler ceremony. The royal family will travel to Buckingham Palace afterward, in a state procession, and appear on the balcony to celebrate the occasion.
In addition to the coronation ceremony, the event will be marked by public ceremonies and celebrations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the British Crown Dependencies and overseas territories. On 7 May, the Coronation Big Lunch will take place in the United Kingdom, providing the public with the opportunity to mark the occasion with street parties. Also a Coronation Concert will be held on the same day at Windsor Castle with representatives of the King and Queen's charities as well as members of the general public in attendance. The Big Help Out initiative will take place on 8 May, to encourage community service and volunteering. Both the coronation at Westminster Abbey and the concert at Windsor Castle will be broadcast on television and streamed online.
This will be the first coronation of a British monarch in the 21st century, and the 40th to be held at Westminster Abbey since that of William the Conqueror in 1066.

The Royal Family are eternally and acutely aware of public sentiment on a wide range of important issues, the cost of their existence being uppermost. This is evident in the curtailing of the formal Crowning service at the Abbey to a single hour. I am an ardent Royalist and am grateful for the stability and strong sense of national identity and belonging the monarchy brings to the country. Presidents come and go and are easily forgotten. Kings and Queens live on for eternity in our hearts and minds. £100m for this rare and joyous spectacle is a piffling sum compared to the hundreds of billions wasted on our former membership of the EU for almost nothing in return.

Quite mind blowing really. Such a historic occasion. Whether you're a Monarchist or not, this is 'living in history' as you said. My Mother camped out in London on the pavement with fellow students to see the late Queen's Coronation. She's 92 years of age. She also stayed up to see the Funeral of the late Queen.
It was interesting to note that in her 92 years of life, she started out singing 'God Save The King' as a youngster in school in Ceylon, then heard 'God save The Queen' for the duration of the late Queen's 50 plus year reign, and is alive to hear the Anthem revert back to 'God Save The King', all in her lifetime. All of us with older parents are living with history books. My Dad's 90 years of age. We really should take note of their recollections. When their generation is gone, we've lost that history, not just in our families, but in society too. I felt the same way when my Grandparents died, especially my Grandmother (paternal) who had this incredible memory for historical details. I think that's why Queen Elizabeth II's passing struck me so surprisingly hard, as my Grandmother's death did.. She represented history and way of life, service and duty that very few people other than members of the Monarchy, religious figures etc seem to abide by. They stand out as a result.
God Bless the late Queen, RIP. God give His Grace to the current Monarchy and the King, Britain and the Commonwealth. This is historic.

The amount of things being reused by the King in his coronation is very much a symbol of today. The cost is likely to be nearer £250m - but most of that will be used up in security costs. Overall the King is very much focusing on today's issues. Pretty much everything is being re-used, robes, jewels, gloves, etc - all re-used from previous coronations. All the crowns are being re-used - including The Queen's - which previously was made new for each new consort. The service is shorter than his mother's Coronation, the route is shorter, the number of those attending is at least half the number then that of 1953 - Importantly 850 of them are from the community and charity sector. I am a person free of faith, so the religious bit is just fancy words - important to others, but no to me. (So I don't say "God Save The King" - I simply use "Long Live the King"). As a British person, this is one of the things we simply do best in the world... there is no-one that comes close, even the Catholic Church! - I hope the world watches and enjoys a moment of history - unique to today and the world we live in, with a healthy dose of over 1000 years of history.

    • @jillosler9353
      @jillosler9353 Před rokem +4

They've always been reused. Nothing to do with 'today'. The Screen is new because the old one was falling to bits. The Coronation Chairs, Crown Jewels, Sceptre and Orb are historic. Health & Safety Rules have limited the 'safe number' of guests to 2,000 and security has made the route shorter. Note that the Monarchs between Queen's Victoria and Elizabeth II had shorter ceremonies too - and coincidentally are Kings like Charles is! The late Queen's Crown was 'new' because the original was broken - but the jewels weren't new.

He needs to read the history on the Koh i Noor diamond. "seized by the British during colonial occupation"
This was not seized but a part of a treaty at Lahore.
. Article III of the treaty read:
The gem called the Koh-i-Noor, which was taken from Shah Sooja-ool-moolk by Maharajah Ranjeet Singh, shall be surrendered by the Maharajah of Lahore to the Queen of England.
Before the Shah stole it, it was owned (stolen) by the Afghans, Iranians, the Moghul empire, Uzbekistan and the Kakatiyas dynasty.

    The sovereign's ring
The "wedding ring of England" is also called the coronation ring and is a symbol of "kingly dignity".
William IV's ring of 1831 features a large sapphire and diamond cluster with baguette-cut rubies in the form of a cross.
It will be presented to the King by Lord Patel.
Instead of having the ring put on the fourth finger of his right hand as is the custom, the King acknowledges it instead.

I am a royalist and very much for the Coronation, but I will startle people by also declaring that I'm a Socialist and on the left wing of the Labour Party!
I hate modern capitalism, but I think why the monarchy still has so much popularity in the UK is because it harks back to older, better, theories of authority: the ancient principle of "Noblesse Oblige" [nobility has obligations]; your feudal Lord had obligations to you as well as to him. (A relic of this was in case of riot. If there was property damage in a riot, the King and his Government paid compensation, because they hadn't protected you. The Metropolitan Police desperately tried to wriggle out of this after riots in London in 2011.)
And there's plenty of money - or there would be if this Conservative Government wasn't letting huge companies and the extremely rich get away with avoiding/evading huge amounts of tax! The national budget is of the order of £700-£800 thousand million, and the tax avoided could easily be £200, 000, 000, 000.
The Coronation has been cut short by cutting short the Homage. In the old days every single noble paid homage. (Because the poor boy was only nine, the Coronation of Edward VI in 1547 was cut down from eleven hours to seven!) In 1953, only the senior noble in each degree paid Homage.
Apparently, we will be asked to say our Homage, if we want it, at home watching. I don't really approve; it's the powerful people in the country who should pay Homage.
I genuinely believe that, secretly, the Right Wing are trying to get rid of the monarchy. Their papers seem to be trying to stir it as much as they possibly can.

Charles has the option of a "cut price" Coronation more fitting to the stark poverty and wealth inequality in our society today, but he said no to that. The excuses for offsetting the gigantic taxpayer cost of this event are legion. "it'll be mostly security costs" or "it'll bring in more revenue from tourism and merchandising" but the fact is, no one will ever know the real truth of the cost. Nor what the revenue benefits actually are for the country, any more than the British people will ever know exactly how much land, money and power the Royal Family truly have. They've done a good job being quite secretive about that over the years. Did you know that the British Government are rushing through draconian anti-protest laws, coincidentally directly ahead of the Coronation, because a number of peaceful anti-monarchy protests are planned. Just watch those protesters carted off in handcuffs by police because they had the effrontery not to agree with the royalist hysteria of this giant waste of money which the taxpayer is paying for - not the billionaire royals, or the political establishment that is behind this. We may as well bring back a host of medieval practices because 21st century Britain is now grandly marching back to the Middle Ages. Or live in Putin's Russia, given how anti democratic and authoritarian it has become. A cautionary note. Enjoy the Coronation and support Charles as your King if you choose. No one is stopping you. After all it's a free country, isn't it? And don't forget that oath of allegiance! Peasants everywhere will salute you.

There is an agreement with Governemnt as to how much of the yearly income goes towards funding working royals and their staff and palace maintenance and palace operations. There is a lump sum basic grant plus a percentage share of the rest of the Crown Estate income. With building maintenace, the royals may get 200million and the government gets about 400million. But last year, the green energy investmentbearned so much that the King invited the government to take the windfall to apply towards relief payments for people who cannot afford energy bills.
