  • Fraudsters motivated by economic gain secretly infiltrate the global food market through a variety of means, including counterfeits, dilutions, substitution and mislabeling.
This not only harms consumers’ wallets, but it also puts public health and safety at risk.
Some estimates say food fraud affects at least 1% of the global food industry at a cost as high as $40 billion a year, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
“We might not know the overall impact of food fraud because so much of what fraudsters do is hidden from us and has been for centuries.” Kristie Laurvick, senior manager of the foods program at the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, told CNBC.
Even the FDA says it can’t estimate how often this fraud happens or its economic impact.
“Be aware of products that you put in you, on you or plug in the wall,” John Spink, director of the Food Fraud Prevention Think Tank, told CNBC.
Between 2012 and 2021, the most common type food fraud was lying about an animal’s origin and dilution or substitution, both ranking at 16% of recorded incidents by food-safety monitor Food Chain ID.
For example, dilution could entail adding a cheaper vegetable oil to an expensive extra virgin olive oil.
“If I drink scotch, I couldn’t tell you [the] difference between a $50 bottle and a $5,000 bottle. So, I know I could be deceived at that point,” Spink said.

The 'one in ten' percentage is probably just the tip of the iceberg!!

This is an uncomfortable watch - we all must have been caught at sometime. I have always thought, until today, that this sort of thing was rare because it was taken care of by food agencies here in the UK - now I wonder about that now?

I don't have a problem eating horse meat but if I buy beef I want it to be beef .
The big problem with passing off horse meat as beef is what type of horse the meat that came from, I personally would not eat meat from a race horse.

We have different kind of scam in Poland. To explain this:
    - masło = butter
    - margaryna = margarine
    - roślinne = (made of) vegetables
So there's a brand called "MR" which makes a mix of butter and margarine (where butter is less than 20%). However though since brand name is "MR" everyone subconsciously think it reffers to "Masło Roślinne" = "Vegetable Butter".
They don't brake any law, they don't claim it's a pure butter, they even write on the packing the whole composition of the product which clearly stands that the amount of real butter inside is minimum but since they use "MR" sign as logo people subconsciously assume it's a butter ('M'asło 'R'oślinne - Vegetable Butter). This is how brain works - it takes shortcuts - and it's been proven by scientists - so this company is taking advantage of it.
Of course scams like in USA are unthinkable here. But even with such legal-scam I have to remind my wife every month that THIS IS NOT REAL BUTTER. And everytime I get a response that she readed somewhere on the package that it is real butter. But after analyzing package over and over again she realize that there's no such information there. She just see MR logo and without any further thinking her brain takes a shortcut assuming it's a butter. And later on she's absolutelly sure that there was info on the package "somewhere" that this is vegetable butter. No - it's not.

I'll have to do my research and read your comments about the differences between the US and Europe (among other countries around the world) on how you all are protected MORE than us citizens here in the United States, since we all know that! 🍔🍣
Very interesting... now I'm questioning my food....

It's hilarious how your FDA complain about 'fake food' and yet they APPROVE all other food there as ok!! Most American food will kill you or make you sick, giving the required maximum profits to your food industry, farms, big pharma and healthcare! You have all been brainwashed for years. We've ALWAYS known about it, so why didn't you guys ? It's horrifying!!

Why the hell does your laughable FDA ALLOW wood fillers in your cheese ? They are in the pockets of big business that's why!

Absolutely true new technology always has glitches and problems look at the Boeing 787 look at the airbus A3. 50 aircraft glitches and problems takes a while to iron them out. I also think strategically HMS Prince of Wales is having some very secret for a top-class modifications added to it, hence while the publicity of the problem has completely died down. Very very clever. Ministry of Defence is actually quite clever using the floor in the technology to cover up an upgrade. I’m sure of that

The U.S. pharmaceutical industry made up 40.8% of the global pharmaceutical market in 2021. General Pharmaceutical Industry Statistics. No prizes for guessing why.

They might as well have said the company who sold fake parmesan we let them off scot-free, what is a 5 grand fine to a business like that.
