I love this version! 👍👍
🙏🐶 Thank you! It's got its own vibe, a little more contemplative, maybe?
@@johnny_amish The slower tempo really changes it. Great vocal!
@@ArturoGofunkez It's fun to look at these songs from different angles!
I really enjoyed your version of this song, and well done J!! 💙🚂💙
Thank you Kim! 💙🚞
This is actually even more of a vibe than I remembered… really big mood. And the acoustic in the room is working for us too, I think. I’m surprised at how different this feels from the next week’s version. Even though it’s the same vocal harmonies and a lot of similar melodica work. Dreamy soundscape, and the visual landscape also contributes to a totally distinct experience (Fanny continues to amaze in that regard). I give this 10/10 in all departments… colourful and exploratory!! 🙌💥
🖤🔥 You know I listened a lot obsessing over mistakes immediately after, but I probably should have given it some distance first. It was very cool to do this in two different styles in consecutive weeks. I will give it a play again today and see how I feel!
@@johnny_amish Yes I did not listen at all until last night! Than I couldn’t really remember which parts I didn’t like when I was doing it (and probably I dislike different parts now). Anyway I’m a different person now. That was me in the past, a young idiot.
👍👍🎃🔨
🙏🐶😂🎃🔨
Very snappy tune and I really enjoyed this!!💗🦋🐭💗💃
Thank you! 🔫🦋 Not sure if it's too much of a subversive take on the original, but I enjoyed arranging and playing it! 💖
Sounds really good J!! 💙💀💙👍
😂❤️🙏 Thank you Kim!
Love the bird at the beginning and the count-in. Love the tone of Kevin’s solos. I think these sonorities make the words far more poignant… it’s got a slight cock-rock vibe when the Wallflowers do it and “The same black like that was drawn on you was drawn on me, and now it’s drawn me in” hits pretty hard - better - on its own without all the affect! Cool song… and did I hear K*ko at 4:20?
Thank you! ❤️🐶 The birds are fantastic, and I agree, Arturo's guitar parts make the video what it is! There is a certain production value with the Wallflowers that really is from the time, even though it might be less ingrained than in other 90's recordings. That definitely was Kiko barking at something out the front window! An audio cameo!
Thanks! I like this as acoustic song, and the birds & barking Kiko were inevitable.
@@ArturoGofunkez More and more I am actually wanting to hear the ambient sound as part of the music. It’s a different vibe if something exists in a soundproofed room vs out on the patio. When we did Poor Wayfarin’ last week there was the sound of water and I really liked that too.

This is a built hit boys! The setting, the light, the found sound (helicopter passing as you say “truck”), [[[K*KO… in addition to the family portrait at the beginning, I spotted at least one mini-cameo, at 1:50]]]… and of course the way your guitars complement each other. Love to hear all the natural acoustic depth that comes from playing these two beauties side by side outdoors… is there any kind of acoustic shell or reflector around you anywhere? Nice sound. Also love that big strummed chord at 3:11… what is that? Thanks for the great song and good vibes.
Thank you! 🙏 This was such a cool experience to film! Kiko's tail cameo is one of my favourite parts, haha! Not sure what he was up to, but he generally seemed quite pleased to just be poking around in the woods 😂 There was a big tree right next to Kevin that I think assisted with the acoustics somewhat, although the tree cover itself was quite high. It was fairly open otherwise, and I was actually quite surprised at how well the sound came across. The strummed chord is a Dm variation (although relative to the capo it is that Am I love, haha). Arruro plays the 12 string beautifully, and I'm always happy to have time on his new Martin! As the beginning of "on location" filming, this was very rewarding!
@@johnny_amish I like “Arruro” as K*ko’s musical pseudonym
@@isaiahsays Ha! ❤️😅🐶
@@isaiahsays Arruro!! He was happy to free range while we played. I love that big minor chord at 3:11 too.
Another wonderful cover my friend. I enjoyed your emotional and soulful interpretation a lot. 👏👏👏

Your cover of this wonderful song is so beautiful Johnny. Thank you for sharing this. 👏🎤🎸🎶👍

Excellent job on this song, and your vocals sound so good!!💙👍💙
Thank you Kim! 🙏💙 I love playing this song!
Wow, a song to the gravedigger..strong lyrics. I like your way of singing and your guitar accompaning👌
Thank you so much, Marianne! 🙏 this song had a profound effect on me as a young man, and I always enjoy playing and singing it. I appreciate so much you taking the time to listen and comment. You are one of my favourite guitar players (not to mention the astounding beauty of your compositions!), and it means a tremendous amount to me.
“Come on Jack, that son of a bitch is comin’.” Sad and sweet song. I like the Guy Clark version much more than the Highwaymen version, even though they are all such great voices and artists. I guess it’s because it’s his own story… anyway your version is more aligned to that take, feeling more personal, I think. Though how you managed to do that while doing all the complexities of the guitar - especially in this piece which seems bquite ornate - I don’t quite understand. 🙌
Thank you! 🙏❤️ I couldn't agree more about the versions - Guy's is an absolute masterpiece, and The Highwaymen version seems almost too busy. Of course all four of them are icons and tremendous songwriters in their own right, but sometimes it's hard for a group like that to live up to expectations. See also: The Traveling Wilburys. It took a lot of practice (and a lot of takes!) to fit all the pieces together for this, but totally worth it. It's right up there with my all-time favourite tunes. 🤗
@@johnny_amish Yes I was thinking of the Travelling Ws too. This happens in opera a lot too, where you get a lot of big starry people in a room together, but it doesn’t always add up to big chemistry. See also: Feed the World. Overfed, overbalanced…
@@isaiahsays Ah! I didn't know it was an opera phenomenon as well, but it makes sense!
Yes! Fuck yeah!! Yesssss!!! I loved your previous take on this so I was stoked to see it return. As soon as I heard the opening notes I knew we were in for it. Your voice shines in this kind of singing, plaintive and vulnerable, like a spiritual fusion of Thom Yorke and Olivia Rodrigo. This cover is even more daring in terms of the lyrical nature… Love it. Quite heart-rending, actually 🥲
Thank you! ❤️🙏🥰 "a spiritual fusion of Thom Yorke and Olivia Rodrigo" is an outstanding turn of phrase! 🤯 I'm still fond of my previous version, so I almost didn't try this again, but when I tried it in the higher key, it felt right. I also wanted a go at the bridge, which I skipped last time. This is possibly one we could consider together at some point? 🤔☔️

Acchhhh the groove on this hook…. I don’t have anything smart to say, I’m just playing it on loop! When that beat drops… also, compositionally you’ve spooled it out generously in periodic variations so that the listener can just surf on it 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
🙏❤️🥰 Love this tune, iconic in my personal listening experience! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
wow this sounds so beautiful johnny!! 😊
Thank you Keeley! I really love your version of this, part of the reason I decided to start working on it 😊
@@johnny_amish aw thank you so much johnny i love your arrangement :))
I’ve always liked this song, found it very evocative, but in my mind it sounds a lot more like your version than the TfF version actually does! When it plays in my head it’s achingly melancholy… And your voice certainly captures that (“Happy birthday”) … perhaps it was encoded into the song in a way that read like to us, or brought up those feelings, when we were younger but that no longer sounds like that to our adult ears? Anyway this is lovely…
Now I’m listening to the Michael Andrews/Gary Jules version and realizing that vibe is much more present there…
However I feel yours has the melancholy without the whimper
🙏❤️ I've definitely spent more timewith the Gary Jules version, which is likely the first one I heard. It seems to me to work better stripped down and sparse, which is my vibe, of course! I've always liked it as well, and can imagine more versions in the future...

Dammmnnnnn… I knew when I saw this song on the docket that this was going to be 🔥🔥 and it did Not Disappoint. Voice in fierce form, when the beat drops I scream, I love the countermelody at the top of the guitar in that section too… and of course the section at 3:45 is an absolute revelation… the colour in your voice and the way the abyss enters the room… real chills. New ground broken, I feel. Also I went and listened to the Rolling Stones version (I admit the Tea Party cover is the version I’m most familiar with)… and your take on that section seems all the more remarkable in contrast with what they do there. The song is absolutely brilliant, as I’m sure they are, but Mick Jagger has always given me the unequivocal icks, and I’m honestly not very familiar with their music. In that section the Mick Jaggerness really comes into the music more, whereas in yours it’s the utter absence of swagger that is 🤯… how did you come to that colour?
Thank you! ❤️🙏 I also came to this song via The Tea Party (it was the time), and honestly still prefer the tone of their version, which definitely influenced how I played this. I decided to think about it more as "How would I sing this if my True Love left and I felt the darkness in a real way" instead of just the "someone pay attention to my angst" way that I get from the Stones. When I got to the last section, I was honestly surprised how it came out, but pleasantly surprised! It's the one part I'm really not a huge fan of in the original (the Mick-ness is a good description!), so I ran it through a few ways, but this felt right!
@@johnny_amish That is Art!! A synthesis of influences combines with one’s personal experiences and a lot of tinkering to make something true!!!
@isaiahsays Making art is the idea! So hopefully it is working! 🙏❤️
wow sounds amazing johnny!! love your playing! :))

I love your sweet, slowed down version of this song!! 😍 You did such a great job!! 💖💥🥰💥❤
Thank you so much Sweetie! ❤️🥰💜💙
OK… how you found the poignancy in this song is a mystery to me… I listened to both Kracker and Gray and found the song much as I remembered it, which is an anthem, a vibe… but not something I personally feel emotional resonance with. My series of reactions was -(upon seeing title) “Uncle KRACKER??” -(song begins) “Oh this is actually quite lovely” -(chorus hits) “Oh this is THAT song??” -“How DOES he do it??” Really lovely - beautifully arranged and sung!
❤️🙏 Oh man, I almost didn't do it because of the UK connection, and the Dobie version seems more like a vehicle for his (admittedly very pleasant) voice than anything else. However, my ears perked up when I got a copy of The Nylons' Rockapella where they cover it. I'm a real sucker for their harmonies, and I've liked the song since then. I did more listening to the Dobie version when I was working on it, though, to pick up pieces I wasn't clear on. It's still not the deepest song, but I was into the vibe!
Fab job fellas!! 🤩 The singing and melodica (I frickin' love this thing!) playing by Dark Flame are top notch (as usual!) but my boo is demonstrating some seriously sweet harmony skills here!! 💥 Exceptional job @johnny_amish!! 💥 You absolutely smashed this in every way!! 🥰💋😘❤ (p.s. these are the Fanny vibes I enjoy! 🤣😴)
