Damn, well this is saddest song I have ever heard 😳
Though I have to say I did not find it as affecting in Leonard Cohen’s voice. I know it’s kind of famous that other people do his songs better than he does… But your voice is so expressive in this, and I think part of that is the vulnerability of letting it be heard in all its colours… while Cohen only used the low range and won’t sustain… by singing through the lines you bring out all the sadness that is hidden by a sort of mask of resignation or remove in his take. This is really sensitively done, and I also far prefer the gentle guitar here over the instrumentation he uses… it’s a lonely song and strings undercut that and try to make it “stirring”, I think, instead of just being with it. Your version really looks at it. How could you sing this without crying???

🙏❤️ Oh man, such incredibly moving words, and I do find it very emotional to sing. This was from the album that came out just a few days before he died, so I'm not sure how much singing he had left in him! I relate significantly (and often) to the "I'm angry and I'm tired all the time" line even though I'm only roughly half the age he was when he wrote this. The strings did seem like an odd choice - a lot of the album is very sparse, so I'm not sure why they chose to dress up one of the deepest lyrical tunes. I also can't fit my head around this being directed towards anyone but G*d? I'm not sure how you read it?

@@johnny_amish Oooohhh if that’s the scope then it makes sense to bring in the strings. It’s kind of an anti-Hallelujah… And the fact I know it’s him very old changes it too. I’m listening to his now and feeling more generous toward it. Good call on that take. I like the idea of apologizing to G*d “I’m sorry for the ghost I made you be”… somehow this makes it even sadder.

I'm not sure if that's his meaning, but it's how I hear it. I agree that it does make it sadder, but also more poignant. This song just blew me off my feet the first time I heard it, and really every time since. To me, one of his best, and I think that's saying a lot. We totally should do a Cohen song together! 🖤🔥
