Thank you so much, Marianne! 🙏 this song had a profound effect on me as a young man, and I always enjoy playing and singing it. I appreciate so much you taking the time to listen and comment. You are one of my favourite guitar players (not to mention the astounding beauty of your compositions!), and it means a tremendous amount to me.

Wow! What a song! I of course didn’t know it because the only music I’ve ever heard is what was played on Energy 98 from 1999-2003… 😅 Must have just missed this one.
I love this. Unlike usually I don’t have any judgmental comments about the production style of the original… I think it’s unequivocally excellent! But your take is such a mood… It really suits the character of your vocality beautifully. And the variety of textures in the accompaniment is top notch. I love that it starts with a rolled chord almost out of time, giving that kind of storytelling vibe… then it cycles through various densities and colours until it returns to a moment of a cappella… really structural! 💥

Thank you! 🙏❤️ I bought this CD when it came out, and played it (this song particularly) on repeat for a while! I don't think I'd ever heard anyone adress mortality quite this way. I tried the low/high dynamic Dave sings for the different parts, but didn't feel quite comfortable enough that I could pull it off. I decided to have the guitar texture change instead, and I think that conveys the tone well! I also discovered that Willie had covered it, and listened to his version for the first time, which is quite a vibe all of it's own! I think Dave's version is superior, but it's always interesting to hear Willie inhabit a song!

@@johnny_amish Wow, I’m not sure what I was expecting from the Willie version, but it’s certainly a vibe! There’s a prose quality to his vocalism… almost like beat poetry or storytelling rather than singing in the traditional sense. Totally different experience from either Dave’s or yours. It’s cool to hear it in this kind of harmonica-and-Wurlitzer aesthetic…

@isaiahsays It's really quite a cover, almost has a Tom Waits feel to it. I really expected it to be straight forward, other than his vocal jazz phrasing, of course.
