Divorce Mauritania Style | Unreported World
Unreported World meets the women of Mauritania beating the stigma of divorce and throwing lavish parties to celebrate. Reporter Ayshah Tull finds out if divorce culture and women taking multiple husbands is as empowering as it sounds.
Subscribe to our channel for more Unreported World episodes czcams.com/users/unreportedworld.
In Mauritania it’s thought half of all women here get divorced at least once. In this West African country, steeped in Islamic heritage, local tribal traditions have normalised the practice of women ditching their husbands with many remarrying multiple times.
In the historic city of Chinguetti, Tull meets Teslem Milid who at the age of 26-years-old is about to celebrate divorce number four. With music, dancing and social media, Teslem announces to prospective husbands that she’s on the market. Most marriages here are still arranged by the women's parents, but Teslem says she’s determined to find husband number five herself. As the dust settles on the party Tull hears from Teslem’s mother, also divorced, that cutting the knot here still isn't without its risks.
Travelling from the desert to the capital, Nouakchott. Tull discovers the unintended legacy of divorce, including the high levels of divorced mothers struggling to feed their children. But despite the challenges some have found a way to support each other by creating a divorce economy.

Some of them have been r*pe by gang members and others sold their bodies to buy food. There are no clinics and they can't afford to see a doctor or, buy birth control. Please do not judge people you don't know their stories and we don't know the future. Peace.

One of the most hated things by Allah swa is divorce. The best in the sight of Allah swa is the one best to his wife or wives. Brothers and sisters we all have to do better. Education of deen and taqwa is the key. We will all have to answer to Allah swa for our actions or inactions. May Allah swa support the sisters that were good to their husbands but were ill treated. May Allah swa give ease to the brothers that were divorced for no legimate reason but were good to their wives. Divorce is a liability not an asset. This is a doorway to so many fitnahs. Muslims beware of the footsteps of Shaitan. He is your open enemy so take him as such. May Allah swa guide us and keep us on the straight path. Amin.
Women have had enough 😂
This has got to be one of the biggest acts of bid'ah among Muslim women. Allāhu musta'an
Cause of death, Coca-Cola!
Many bunches of set of stupid people on here commenting rubbish and nonsense praising the women for getting divorced, shame on you all. No one is talking about the bad habits and stubbornness the Mauritanian women possessed which is causing their divorced. The black lady asked one of them to give her an advice as a married woman and her replied was that, if you want your marriage to last, always respect and submit to your husband. She then talked about the main reason their husband has been divorcing them, she said when their husbands talk to them they don't listen and they don't obeyed (Stubbornness) that's why they have been getting dumped out of marriage. And I see lots of people celebrating the Mauritanian women for having such a bad characters towards their husband. As a married woman, are you supposed to obey your husband or you are supposed to disobey him?
Shumi is absolutely adorable! She's so sweet. She makes me cry. I want to put my arms around her and hug and kiss her ❤😢
Why keep getting pregnant when you know you're in a bad situation.
Primitive country for primitive people.
Would love to hear the husbands' side of things although I think the mother already gave us a hint. UNRULY!
Poor women getting divorced is an embarrassment lol I would never marry a woman who is divorced
The cameraman knew exactly what hes doing filming the white baby😂
Men are so cold hearted to their offspring
Wow! And I thought only American women were this, "Lack", when it comes to marriage. SMH. Pitty. I'm sure most children there never really get to know their father or the father's side of the family. Like I said, American. Too bad someone has to lose. Mashallah.
This is so sad.
4 weeks old baby? There can’t be a divorce when a lady is pregnant. Look into that one with the scholar.
Are children' s involved in this situati0ns. Thank you for reporting this to the world.
Arabia
More power to the women of Mauritania. Nothing keeps them in an abusive marriage, and they can even right away search for another husband . No stigma attached.❤❤
I love the acceptance of every people in the world. But the future of such society is not that too bright especially on how to treat people with respect. Iran and Saudi, Pakistan should learn something from these too. Acceptance of everyone is important
Same male child who is a product of these broken home grew up to marry these women and the circle of broken home continues. There should be serious teaching to the men and women how to manage family and relationship. There are hard and soft times. There is a leader in a family. U must submit to that leader. That leader in turn is a leader and should learn what it takes to lead. If everyone things they are equal in the eyes of family then challenges emerge
This particular culture is ruining 😒 the society of Mauritania 🇲🇷. No strong Value for the family
Well, the first woman got divorced 4 times. I'm willing to be her sixth. Best wishes.
Wowwww this is giving me another view to divorce and marriage.
I'm tired of the respect of man
Thank you for sharing 😂😢❤
I dont get it. We know where the predators are at. We know where the victims are at. Why law enforcement resources are heavily focused on traffic stops, rec drugs and not our children. Theres only one way to deal with predators. 💀
i remember watching this video when i was younger and only clicked on it because of the edges on the thumbnail (messy) but i see the video completely different now that i’m older😩😭
❤❤Thank you so much for showing us the survival mechanism of these brave souls. As you already know in some countries divorce happens to be a devastating loss of good reputation. It leads to generational poverty, alienation and self blame. Keep up the good work!!!
GOD can u just hurry up and come this is a damn shame ....😢🙏🏽
Now the most imortant question. Do the fathers still pay child support for the children after the divorce or just disappear ?
More power to you all Mauritanian women you will need it to continue to care for the next generation.
Sound like they need a PLAN B asap....
