  • Unreported World meets the policewomen tackling what’s been described as Pakistan’s gender violence epidemic, after the high profile killing of a woman brutally murdered by a male friend.
A wave of violence against women is sweeping across Pakistan. Figures suggest nearly one in three women have experienced domestic violence from a man they know personally. In one of the most insecure places to be a women, hundreds if not thousands of women are murdered, assaulted or kidnapped each year. Rarely do their male attackers face justice.

As a domestic violence survivor, It was very comforting when a woman officer was sent out to take my report. The first people that you encounter when reporting your abuser will make all the difference to encourage you to pursue charges. I am happy that they have a woman team helping those woman, no one should be abused and live in fear of loosing their lives.

Hey @Dee Dee, what u said is actually something which most of us never even think of it as some imp factor!
I like the way u explained it. I totally agree that with the situation n mental stress a victim is going through in that moment, they badly need someone who can atleast LISTEN to them, if not act on their complaint.

@@RameshM-tl9tq exactly, like the woman in this video mentioned, no one would listen to her so she felt trapped in that situation. It is already difficult for a woman to take action against their abuser. I’ve read articles about police officers saying that Domestic Violence calls are the most dangerous calls to respond to.

As a domestic violence detainee. Let me tell you that in the US, the man even though bleeding after she hurt him. Is him going to jail and face charges for a crime he did not commit. 5,00 dollars later the DA dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence that I committed a crime and yet no charges to her for LYING were ever held. Woman want Equality in the US but there is none. If a woman shows up to my call. She will take her side. So you are clearly showing and stating the BIAS for such cases.
My case is one of many where the woman commits a crime and gets away with it because clearly to anyone as a COP a woman can not harm anyone. I demand equality across the board. Let us say a male cop shows up to your case. Why did he not arrest him?
Maybe we need better cops and not those who want it easy. I am sorry Dee Dee that you had a male cop not accept your report. I live in Dallas and male or female cop. I was a skinny male 110 and she was a 200 lbs woman and they all arrested me as clearly I can cause more harm than they can. They got away with it and hope they live a good life. I wish no one no harm but the injustice hurts.
May I say I am also Mexican so there is that factor to the white cops arresting me. There is no equality. There is no justice. I cannot sue the cops who faked the report either. Merica

It's not that simple. This is a widespread culture that breaks through gender lines. Patriarchy and misogyny can be practiced by women in the communities; this is the downside of mixing a heavily conservative culture based system of society (patriarchy) and sexist ideology (misogyny) with specific religious beliefs. By mixing culture, politics and religion, the conservative clerics have a major strangle hold in large swaths of Pakistan, in policy and practice. Besides, some of the men's mothers promote and support their actions, for the "family honor."

The one lady interviewed and shown opposing the “Choice” opponents said “Islam is not inflexible,” but the next man shown, right after her, said they will retaliate “by force” if people and the government seek to honor women’s rights. I am confused. Telling your opponents you will have the nation run your way “by force” does not sound like any form of flexibility. The entire case is based on a woman who said she did not want to marry an Islamic man, so the non “inflexible” Islamic man held her captive and violently killed her. From my perspective, it seems the very reason the uprising occurred is due to an inability to live in a land with flexibility.

BBC did a lengthy investigation into the plight of young homeless boys in Pakistan. With no women on the streets the men go after young boys. Apparently it's an epidemic. They show honest interviews with men who sit there and explain their actions, so gross and horrible. They also interview the boys who also explain what happens to them. As an Islamic nation, I was totally shocked at the scale of abuse against little boys. They're helpless, and it's heartbreaking.

Look at the recent case of Sarah Everhart in the UK, it depressing when you think of it, that you are a target for simply wanting to walk home at night. I work the nightshift at a hospital, when I go to work I have to extra vigil of my safety every day and it's tiring. That also doesn't only apply to night anymore either, a nurse at a nearby hospital had to lock herself in a bike garage to protect herself from a guy trying to SA her at 9:30 AM on a Friday. It's disgusting behaviour that really isn't challenged and that really needs to change. Just because I have a pulse doesn't mean I'm interested.

Though this women are making big difference and should be supported, this is cultural/religious issue really and would need religious or ideological change to find a permanent solution. Pakistan made a mistake when it dropped Sufi Islam for the infamous wahabi sect. Just look at countries that are well known for this sect..... women can't drive, woman can't hold a bank account under their name (it has to be a joint account with husband or father), women can't leave the house without a guardian (husband, father or brother), they have to cover their faces (it's not a choice). I even met a Saudi woman who told me she couldn't buy a simcard for her phone because her brother was at work. The sad thing is i remember when Pakistanis were mainly a practicing Sufi Muslims and women would not cover their hair, they were involved in front facing roles, involved in arts, science, music, poetry.... basically Pakistan was a living nation.......And this wasn't that long ago.. really sad, but many Muslim countries are going through this negative transformation including my home country.....for those of us that are old enough to remember 30 years ago or earlier, the difference in many Muslim countries is striking, people were happier, woman were lot safer hence whole society was lot safer and society was more productive.... But the good news is many young people are becoming aware that wahabism is actually being pushed by the west to weaken Muslim countries and are also rediscovering their Sufi routes and an Islam that is compatible with science, culture, the arts, poetry and love (Rumi is one example) something wahabism is definitely not.
I'll leave you with these quotes from Rumi....
“Woman is a ray of God. She is not that earthly beloved: she is creative, not created.” -Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rumi.
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”.-Jalāl al-Dīn Mohamed RUMI

People in Western Europe and North America have it easy. Their religious right wing (esp. the ones who mix politics with religion) are just more annoying online and intrusive in person, and don't have much impact on policy and practice at the societal or national level (barring a few exceptions like Roe v Wade in the US). Here in East Africa, or in countries in South Asia and Middle East, the religious right wing HAVE a very powerful impact on policy and practice whether at micro, meso or macro levels. It ain't just obnoxious presence on social media, these people are up in your face on a daily basis and have a widespread impact on local cultures. Pakistan has a longggggg way to go before such movements become widely accepted, a longgggg way to go.

The right to inheritance , to vote , to live life was bestowed upon by islam . What you see is a heinous twist of the society justifying their acts in the name of religion . Mind you the prophet in his last words repeated it thrice to “take care of women” .
