  • Unreported World is riding the waves of change in Senegal where young female surfers are trying to smash traditional stereotypes.
Following Khadjou Sambe the west African country’s first professional female surfer, reporter Minnie Stephenson discovers a group of young women and teenagers fighting to get their surf school recognised. But the predominantly Muslim state takes a culturally conservative view on the role of women, with most expected to focus on domestic duties around the home.
Through Khadjou’s story Stephenson hears about the sacrifices and obstacles placed in front of young women trying to take up a traditionally male sport. Physical intimidation by male surfers, and opposition from their families is common. But will the women succeed?

This was never about the girls… its clear the beef with the federation is with the club owners( the coach and the pro). Clearly the community is too deeply religious and hesitant to accommodate them

Why is it called black girls surf? For one its Africa, and two it's the religious doctrine of their country is stifling their creativity, nothing to do with their colour.

As a back American woman to me its deeper than just race for these women. Deeper than them being black girls surfing.
They are going against cultural standards and roles set for them in their country and or ethnic group. And for a lot of Islamic African countries against religion on top of that.
Sometimes I think we need to stop simplifying a matter or subject we do not understand or has more layers to it. To fit our mindset in the west.

This isn't about racism. It's about sexism. She's upsetting men. Black men are their oppressors. There aren't white people in her country

Those conservative Muslims say they don't want women to surf because they want women to marry instead. But a lot of men want a woman who surfs.

An otherwise great documentary was undermined by the use of the word gender instead of sex. These young women face discrimination on the grounds of sex. The concept of Gender and gender discrimination reinforces harmful stereotypes these young women are fighting

These girls should be free to surf. But let me add, you don’t have to be a Muslim to protest a show showing a beautiful woman as some mistress; who produced it…a MAN!!! I believe such a show is a horrid example of a liberated woman! That is CRAP! In my opinion, this episode seems to show two extremes: extremely religious and almost extremely feminist.

As long as they All stay with the Commandments of GOD JESUS CHRIST their fine, there's nothing in Scripture that says a woman cannot surf , in fact it might help in a desaster
