Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST ENDING EVER | Georgia Tech @ Miami (2023)
Well... you already knew this one was coming
When the Miami Hurricanes and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets played each other and Miami was leading by three with under 40 seconds left and the Yellow Jackets having no timeouts, conventional wisdom would say to take a knee in that situation to end the game, right? Well, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal did not do that. Spoiler alert- it backfired pretty badly

    Another twist in that title game is Machurek had a huge elbow cyst that had to be bled out in the rocker room before the game. One of the team physicians said he never heard a man howl in pain like he did that day. Machurek got his arm mobility restored and the rest is history.

    The Liberty Bowl had a unique opportunity to match up 2 Mississippi schools that had not played one another in years… Southern Miss fans would have walked across broken glass to have a shot at Ole Miss. I’m not sure why it’s controversial for the bowl to try & make it happen.

    Vanderbilt is also a founding member. The SEC will stick to tradition for as long as possible and will manipulate what they can to maintain it (look at the 2024 conference schedules for certain rivalry games being unaffected). Vandy has remained despite all the realignment. Outside of football, Vanderbilt has a competitive baseball team and basketball team. It's not always about football.

    Who did the Big Eight play back in that day? The OU Nebraska game decided the conference champ every year. Colorado won it maybe once a decade. Penn State offered a broader TV market, and the game (a 13-6 Tide win) was very well played and competitive. The fact that Nebraska lost to ASU shows that they were not that great that year. They barely beat Florida in the Sugar Bowl the season before.

    The problem with pairing the SoCon with the Missouri Valley Conference for a bowl game is that the MVC was a hybrid conference made up of FBS and FCS teams. At the time they were looked at as a option for this game only NMST Wichita St and Tulsa were FBS which is why the conference did not have a bowl designation. Shortly after this took place NMST left to go independent and the conference then folded in 1985 with Wichita St dropping FB after 1986. That left Tulsa who won the last 5 MVC titles really the only team that could compete in the game. I also think the writing was on the wall for the SoCon in regards of division classification. Part of me thinks that the NCAA never wanted this bowl to happen simply because they did not think that the SoCon belonged in in 1A/FBS and used this as a reason the drop them down to FCS.

    I’ve never understood this thing about needing timeouts specifically for tv. You have regular timeouts, between quarter breaks, injuries, halftime, in the case of NFL and College starting this year 2:00 Warning, pregame, postgame……..you have a shit ton of opportunities to put in advertisements, there should be zero reason you need to add to the runtime of the game specifically because you need ad space. It’s ridiculous. Here’s a though, not at the time but in the modern day, there’s this thing called picture in picture, shouldn’t be that hard to either put an ad in the corner during a play or two OR split the screen, keep the game going and show ads. There’s plenty of solutions to make sure the game doesn’t take all friggin day and you get your ads in.

    • @otaviofrn_adv
      @otaviofrn_adv Před 4 dny

      Even with less tech there were solutions. But the thing is football accepted that without batting an eye. If the leagues stomped their feet and said no this wouldn't be the norm. You don't see other sports and most forms of racing accepting this. When they say US sports leagues are infomercials with a game in between they are probably right
